@@alanderson9711 I have in front of me my copy of MOJO Magazine, January 2006 in which it's reported that Mike Love was suing Brian Wilson (again). One of the reasons, according to Van Dyke Parks was possibly "the economic pressure of seven ex- wives". I'm going with MOJO and the guy who had to put up with Love. In addition, the biography Heroes And Villains - The True Story Of The Beach Boys by author Steven Gaines documents Love's penchant for domestic abuse in the late 60's. So much for Transcendental Meditation.
I miss Denis man. I think back about his life and it breaks my heart. Murray fucked those boys up so bad and it has haunted them even after he died. Denis was lost after the band washed up, a lost lonely very damaged and misunderstood rock Icon. He was The Beach Boys, the only one to actually surf, self taught drummer, lyricist, Race Car Driver, Ladies Man, Tough S.O.B, amazingly Handsome and also an avid Sailor who loved the ocean. And most of all, he was always fiercely loyal to Brian, the true genius behind the band! Denis was a true renaissance man! Rest in piece Denis, we will never forget you.
And you didn't even touch on the grip of fear that he apparently quietly lived under after his early encounter with The Family. If reports can be trusted, he was extorted out of much of his wealth and much of his youthful sunny presence by that fateful association. It's horrible to contemplate the sort of dread - the sort of secrets - he likely took with him when he left us.
@Thaydrian, Thank You for your terrific statement, I agree with you 100%. I loved Dennis Wilson for all the reasons you have mentioned so well. I was crushed on that December day in 1983 when I heard that he had drowned. PS, there's a really good documentary on RUclips about Dennis. It's called "Dennis Wilson, The Real Beach Boy." check it out!

Mike Love NEEDS the Beach Boys name to tour and release music and just cashed in on the nostalgia and the hype whereas Brian is a legend and his name itself is enough.
I have been in many bands in the last 25 years with people with the same personality traits as Mike. I have never met him but from a lot of footage and reading his autobiography I highly doubt that I would get on with him. Annoying is not the right adjective
@Atomic Elbow, in what sense? He released one good album then slumped into a long period of mediocrity. This "George was the true genius" revisionism doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
Sloth from The Goonies YES! George Harrison was a musical genius. Unlike that crappy kid music that Paul McCartney wrote. Compare their music in their solo careers.
I love how Brian is always so completely honest lol. "Can't stand the guy, can't be around him for more than 5 minutes, I really don't like him at all". Most artists would probably say something more corporate like "we've had our differences" or just avoid the question
@@lamarravery4094 Yes, that is his real last name - Love was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Emily Glee (née Wilson) and Edwin Milton Love. In addition to being cousin to the Wilson brothers, Love is the brother of former NBA basketball player Stan Love and of Pink Martini harpist Maureen Love, and the uncle of Minnesota Timberwolves basketball player Kevin Love.
Brian Wilson is truly the most talented and humble of geniuses. The world is a better place because of his music. What a comfort it has been to me for many years.
I met him and Al at this private meet and greet before a concert. I am just obsessed with his life story. He was an absolute darling. And Al loves him so much. Personality aside, just musically speaking, its ridiculous to even speak of Brian Wilson & Mike Love in the same sentence. There can be no comparison. The genius and the dwarf. Brian is a titan, a blessing given once in a lifetime. Mike Love is at best an average talent, adorned in baubles & lacking in substance.
ChismsTrail No One ever compares them musically, but Mike Love was an important part of that group - he’s the only one that exhibited any personality on stage and in interviews. you could tell he was a happy guy, he had fun performing. the others were great musically, but, except for Dennis, they were very subdued, more cerebral. Not that there’s anything wrong with being cerebral, but Mike Love was the one that brought the fun to the performances.
Carl’s vocal on god only knows is earth shattering. Music can’t get any better in my eyes and I’m English and more of a Beatles fan. I’ve loved that song since being a small child of 5/6

I don't want to be judgemental as I have never met Mike Love, but he does not come across very well in interviews and seems to like being the main attraction.
Agreed. I'm convinced some of his tensions with Brian stemmed from him being bitter over getting a smaller share of lead vocal duties starting with the Pet Sounds era and Carl's increased vocal presence.
skakirask Makes sense- Mike has the control freak impulses of a star with a half octave flat vocal range and the ability to steal writing credits with a single phrase contribution. He’s an awful, insecure person by any metric. It’s rare Brian denigrates him at all, though. Even this criticism is more civil than Mike Love deserves.
It's not being judgmental when you are simply describing what is taking place. Love doesn't come off very nice because he is not very nice. You are 100% accurate: he want to be the main attraction. And he just can't deliver because he doesn't have the innate talent.
It's too bad because I think he's very talented and an important member of this band. My favorite band. I think someone being a dick doesn't take away from what they contributed. My heart still swells when he sings "good night baby sleep tight baby".
I was lucky to see the original lineup when they came to the UK in 1980, a brilliant openair concert that will stay in my memories forever, Thankyou guys.
It was Mike Love that kept the BB on track. Brian Wilson wanted to make experimental hippy music that was dreadful. Pet Sounds was a juck Beach Boys Album because it was all Wilson. Mike Love did not want that new age hippy sound as he knew it was not the Beach Boys. If Wilson had of released that on his own he would have been blasted by everybody and considered terrible. The only real Beach Boys song on it was Wouldn't It Be Nice.
bighand69 There were a ton of other surf bands around in that day that nobody remembers and the reason that is is that none of those bands ever made a Pet Sounds.
Murry bought Brian all the gear he needed, even a very expensive early multi-track device. Murry got the band signed, not easy as they were just kids with no track record. Life isn't black & white, people are typically more complex than that. There were many sides to Murry. :-)
Merely buying material things for one's kids does not make one a good parent. If my father bought me a Cadillac on Monday and hit me so hard on Tuesday that I lost my hearing in one ear, as happened to Brian, my father would still not be a good father.

While I'm the last person to defend Mike Love on most things, he's not neccessarily completely wrong here. The compositions are all Brian. The music is done mostly by the Wrecking Crew. The lyrics are mostly Brian and his writing partner at the time. Most of the recording was done while the rest of the Beach Boys were on tour. It's mostly a record about Brian's anxieties at the time. Mike's kind of right but for all of the wrong reasons
Pet Sounds popularity was very slow to arrive. Bear in mind it was a 'critic' for Rolling Stone mag who shit all over P/S's when it was first released in '66. Said it was 'a self-indulgent mess.' Imagine. Pop music critics are like screen doors on a submarine: Interesting idea. But not at all practical. The band (Beach Boys) wasn't particularly thrilled with P/S's either, at the time. The songs were wayyyy ahead of their time. 55 year later the LP sounds as good as the day it was cut. Rolling Stone Mag on the other hand, hasn't aged nearly as well..........
I got to meet Brian right around the year 2000 when a newspaper I worked for gave him an award. We hung out in his dressing room and shared a plate of chocolate chop cookies. He was a really nice man. It was pretty cool.

Brian Wilson and Mike Love are quite a contrast. Brian is a genius of unadorned sincerity - Mike is one of the creepiest performers to ever hold forth on stage, with his attention-seeking go-go dancing and his ring-on-every-finger, slimy huckster persona. Brian taps deeply into the soul. Mike's last name is ironic, to put it mildly - reminds me of Buddy Love. I guess Brian is the Nutty Professor side of the relationship. One is the extrovert the other the introvert. Still, they did make for an interesting chemistry.

Top five 1960s song writers in my opinion: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. Not necessarily in that order. Agree? Disagree?
I have seen both Brian Wilson and Mike Love's Beach Boys live in the last 12 months. The crowds and the reactions they get could not be more different. When Brian is on stage there is a genuine warmth and hero worship that comes from the audience. Mike's is more manufactured, running videos at the back of the stage showing him in the 60s with The Beatles and then talking about "my cousin Brian" all the time. Brian just performs and the crowds love him.
Some music manage to combine the two fairly effectively but the true creatives are either sensitive and don't like the uncontrollable public that much, or take themselves or their work too seriously and have trouble really warming to audiences - who already warm to them thru their music. One of the strengths of the Beatles was they had two of each type, it made them damn near impregnable during the peak popularity years which would have caused less well-balanced outfits to implode. There are myriads of examples to study but consider the strong egos in the Stones, the Who, the Eagles, the Police. And how they caused those bands great tension.
Ian Bartle A great point well made. The dynamics in bands is something that has fascinated me over time because of the way it relates to real life. It also tells us a lot about band managers and how important their role is in defusing tensions. Brian Epstein's death played a role in the demise of The Beatles as did the Eastman Kline battle for control.
Mike Love came up with some great hooks in his day but I don't envy Brian Wilson for having had to put up with his cousin's bloated ego for over seven and a half decades. Tacking on "good night my baby, sleep tight my baby" to a song that was already perfection does not make one deserving of song credit.
Lisa S It’s kind of hard to say who was right or wrong there, though. They were different kinds of jerks. It’s a lot easier to say who has always been wrong between Brian and Mike.

He isn’t a paranoid schizophrenic. He had severe anxiety. He became agoraphobic. Get it straight

He regularly experiences auditory hallucinations that present themselves in the form of disembodied voices.According to him, he began having hallucinations in 1965, shortly after starting to use psychedelic drugs. In 1984, he had been diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic, with doctors finding evidence of brain damage caused by excessive and sustained drug abuse."
You really can't criticize Mike Love's baldness. I mean, his hair didn't fall out. It's just that his head is so fucking big, he outgrew it. If Mike Love were not a relative of the Wilson's, he'd have spent his life cleaning toilets.
Well despite Brian actually making fun of Mike (love it, I want popcorn) he was humble and courteous in his RRHOF speech. A far cry from Mike's heckling him then abusing other artists namely, Paul MacCartney, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel.... He showed himself to be the narcissist backstabber for money he truly is. What a fool.
Only problem is: the Beach Boys aren't together. Mike Love is performing under the name with a bunch of musicians who definitely aren't the Beach Boys. HIs act should be called Mike Love Continues Milking the Beach Boys. Brian and Al perform together...there are no antics, there is no ego. They have gathered several very talented musicians to play with them. Their performances are all about the music and spirit that made the Beach Boys great. Love merely wants to strut and prance and primp. Those actions are meant to cover-up the mediocre music he provides.
Quick story.....My very first concert I ever went to was Steely Dan opening up for The Beach Boys back in 1974 in Columbus, Ohio. This was The Dan of Steel with Jeff Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, Donald Fagan, Walter Becker and a little known back up singer named Michael McDonald. They came out and Blow The Doors Off The Auditorium. They got TWO encores and you could see Mike Love on the side of the stage literally blowing a gasket. THEN, when the Beach Boys came out at least half the crowd left AFTER Love had the nerve to say "most new bands don't overstay their welcome". He got BOO'ED BIG TIME. I left as well. Fucking guy has always been a Drama Putz.
Nor do smart audiences overstay their welcome either. Following Steely Dan, no matter what configuration of Beach Boys you put onstage, was pure artistic treachery. I think that what Mike uttered was "Lovespeak" for what I just said in English.

Which music was important to him mike albums didn’t do good which makes it hard to believe that he helped Dennis
@@srhodes2381 Mike wrote lyrics for Good VIbrations, he didn't compose the music. Brian wrote the music and presented the concept about picking up vibes.
Mike Love always seemed to me that he wanted the most attention and was the one with the least talent.
and what did he name is son !!! someone he had a lot of respect for , check it out.
Brian loved the music and to be creative . Brian without Mike would be successful , Mike without Brian probably wouldn't be .
I don't agree. Brian Wilson is a genius, but he needed someone like Mike Love to ground him (and his father was far worse than Love).
Whether it be his lack of confidence, potential PTSD, or his mental illness, there were factors that limited his raw talent - without Mike Love, Brian Wilson would not be successful.
I totally see how Love became a vestige, but it doesn't mean that he didn't have an important part to play...
I got to go to their house as a kid in 1961. They lived in Hawthorne and me and my brothers grew up in Redondo Beach. My brother knew Carl somehow. So long ago. Anyway Mike Love has always been a nightmare. He want's to be Brian but sorry man.
Yep, Redondo Beach CA, Aviation High School (1965 grad) and Hogan’s House of Music on Hawthorne Blvd where I use to work for Chuck (a bassman) selling and repairing instruments for local musicians, including The Beach Boys...
@@patrickmyers2919 My oldest brother went to Aviation High. Was Hogan's in Lawndale or Hawthorne?
And we should trust your account? How? Anybody can say anything under a pseud.
Top five 1960s song writers in my opinion: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. Not necessarily in that order. Agree? Disagree?
I would say that is pretty much my exact top 5... nailed it IMO.
Holland Dozier Holland maybe? Goffin King?
Amen to that
Maybe Harry Nilsson too but his decline was fast and sad.... Him and Lennon hung out all the time back in the day apparently
You have to have Mick or Keef in there. You have to.
Your comments solidify my impression that Brian is a creative musician, Mike is an entertainer.
When Brian says something you know it's sincere - this guy just cannot lie.
Al Jardine is a genius.
Don't blame ya Brian, I don't like him either.
You know him? Ever met him? Met Brian?
Mike Love came up with some great hooks in his day but I don't envy Brian Wilson for having had to put up with his cousin's bloated ego for over seven and a half decades.
Tacking on "good night my baby, sleep tight my baby" to a song that was already perfection does not make one deserving of song credit.
Not just Brian. Dennis and Mike were always fighting.
Lisa S It’s kind of hard to say who was right or wrong there, though. They were different kinds of jerks. It’s a lot easier to say who has always been wrong between Brian and Mike.
@@robertkett3754 This is true.
You've never heard the old songwriting credo, "change a word, earn a third?"
@ Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin did assault Dennis - it was not at the prompting of Mike.Stan and Rocky were Brian's "bodyguards", Dennis was regularly hanging with Brian and it was not unusual for them to do a bunch of coke together which Dennis would source. Stan and Rocky took it upon themselves to beat Dennis.
Mike Love during the recordings for Good Vibrations: Don’t fuck with the formula Brian
Mike Love now when he’s performing good vibrations: By the way I wrote this song
I met both Brian and Mike, Brian is just Brian, kind open and friendly, Mike well he is ok, just thinks he is better then everybody else and that he is the man behind the beach boys which he is clearly not!!! I mean i saw Brian live with the 50th ann. tour and it was awesome, saw Brian solo which was awesome, saw the beach boys with mike love and it was awfull haha, like an oldies band who play on sundays in a home for elderly people!!! he is hurting the reputation of the beach boys with those "shows". No, Mike was just the frontman and the "cool guy" after Dennis in the band, he helped on a few tracks aswell. Brian is the beach boys, with Carl and Dennis and Al Jardine is great to :)
Its many things however funny i dont see?? but thanks imfoa
Every time I see Mike Love he has a hat 🧢 on! You’re bald 👨🦲 Mike, there’s no shame in it. Perhaps Mike is jealous of Brian’s talent and HAIR 😂.
Why is it that the puny always seek to bring down the great? Mike Love is a lilliputian and Brian is Gulliver.
Brian’s hair is fabulous , I’m so jealous. Not to defend the idiot the is mike love, but in that generation, losing your hair was something you tried to hide, it was just that way. The bass player in my band around the same time wore a full wig. Having said that, mike is still a 100% ass of the highest order, and a bald one too, sorry mike!
Before he started wearing hats, he had a huge combover. He's always been insecure. He's old now, like who cares if you're bald.
Lmfaoooo Brian making fun of Mike’s voice. The shade is unreal. I love Brian.
I totally believe what Brian said about Mike Love.. I find Mike Love egotistical
Mike Love is the anti-Christ...
It sounds true but remember Brian Wilson has schizophrenia which causes paranoia and delusions sometimes. We don't know if he feels that way about Mike love based on actually interactions they've had or if his delusions or paranoia may have some influence
He isn’t a paranoid schizophrenic.
He had severe anxiety. He became agoraphobic. Get it straight
@ have you seen love & mercy? Also Wikipedia says "Wilson is diagnosed as a schizoaffective with mild manic depression.
Mike Love is a egotistical ham while Brian Wilson is an American musical treasure.
I can’t say I blame Brian at all, not one bit.
News flash...No one really likes mike love, except mike love.
I absolutely can’t stand Mike Love, before I even read up all the shitty things he did, I just didn’t like his vibe in general
You really can't criticize Mike Love's baldness. I mean, his hair didn't fall out. It's just that his head is so fucking big, he outgrew it. If Mike Love were not a relative of the Wilson's, he'd have spent his life cleaning toilets.
Janitor lol
Well despite Brian actually making fun of Mike (love it, I want popcorn) he was humble and courteous in his RRHOF speech. A far cry from Mike's heckling him then abusing other artists namely, Paul MacCartney, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel.... He showed himself to be the narcissist backstabber for money he truly is. What a fool.
My mom dated Mike Love. Always wished she dated Brian
OH you dodged a major bullet there, prenatally, that is - thank God your mom moved on.......
So did she ever comment on Mike? Would she agree with the Mike haters?
0:46 Now I see the importance of giving Mike an instrument 😂
Well I had always enjoyed listening to The Beach Boys and I still do today they all sing good together and they are all just the greatest .
They were great !!!!
I've been defending bashers of Mike Love that Brian wouldn't have kept Mike around if he didn't like him...well now I know the truth. ty
Every time Brian Wilson mocks Mike Love, an angel gets its wings and another girl rejects Mike Love from her DMs.
Brian, I never liked Mike Love either. But always loved the rest of y'all
Quick story.....My very first concert I ever went to was Steely Dan opening up for The Beach Boys back in 1974 in Columbus, Ohio.
@@davidmurray2539 Audiences "over-staying" their welcome?.....THEY are the Customer who pays The Coins so that Douche bags like Mikey boy can earn a living. You got it Brass- Ackwards Slick.
@@rockyraccoon3630 Appreciate that! By the way...loved you on The White Album! Cheers
Brian Wilson and Mike Love are the complete opposite of Lennon and McCartney, but the weird thing is Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney are really similar, the major similarity is their both musical geniuses
Mike got screwed over but you probably do not know what I am talking about?
Mike Love singing "Brian is Back" sounds like a cheesy ad campaign that he was forced to sing--he may as well be singing a McDonalds commercial. In fact, I think at one point he even called it a "campaign"--the "Brian is Back" campaign! And even when he sings it, he tries to make it about himself!
Girl,you call that singing!!
I loved his singing. Be nice.
