  • A walking tour in 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗮, region 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼, center Italy, province of 𝑳𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒂, a small town of about 3.100 inhabitants.
** Sperlonga was the first ever walk I did for this channel, 2 years ago more or less and I was happy to try to get back to the beginning with this video, and trying to see the differencies, and the angles I couldn't walk in 2 years ago... I hope you enjoy this new walk of a stunning town in the pontine coast of Lazio **

In the territory there are traces of human activity starting from the upper Paleolithic.
According to a mythical tradition, near Sperlonga stood the city of Amyclae (in Greek Αμύκλαι), founded by the Spartans.
In Roman times, numerous villas arose in the territory, framed in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Fundi, the most famous of which is the so-called one of the emperor Tiberius, including a modified natural cave decorated with sculptures from the cycle of Ulysses. The villas also served as production centers for the fishing industry.
In the 6th century the ruins of the imperial villa were used as a refuge, but the town developed on the nearby promontory of San Magno, a spur of the Aurunci mountains, to defend against raids by sea by the Saracens. The name probably derives from the large cave (spelunca) incorporated in the villa of Tiberius.
The castrum Speloncae is mentioned in a document from the 10th century: it included a small church dedicated to St. Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The town developed around the castle progressively, in concentric circles.
In the 11th century the town was surrounded by walls, of which two....

Thank you Riccardo another beautiful walk. Beautifully filmed and fascinating history very well researched.. It's a case of if walls could talk what tales they could tell ..... wandering around the little narrow alleyways seeing the legacy of times past .... little houses packed together whispers of memories of lives past of hardship... poverty joy and tragedy.... And times of fear being conquered many times down the centuries. Ciao Riccardo

I will never get enough of these Italy amazing towns and cities. I think the nature of these places makes them stunning the way the citizens maintain them, they are homogeneous people. Glad you like them Esther, indeed... smaller towns, especialy tiny towns, are my favourite as well, for the reasons you mention also. Sperlonga becomes my favorite Italian small coastal city favorite. It is just magical for me for two reasons:
    1. I love the way they decorate the facade and the way of their houses with flowers, paintings, shells etc.
    2. They have "real" beaches with sand, waves and the lovely sound of the sea.

@@StillWanderer I FINALLY got to listen to the entire video, and yes, I did enjoy the natural sounds at the end. Thank you for not speaking like those that need to explain everyplace that's shown, and for not suddenly turning the camera left or right. I don't remember who does it but they slowly focus ahead and keep walking then suddenly dart the camera to the left or right when they notice something in those directions. Your videos are nice and smooth and I love hearing people talking as they pass you by. As for the location, Sperlonga, I would just love to stay there and get lost. It reminds me of Santorini (although I've never been there) with the white buildings and blue doors. Also reminds me of San Marino and the historic La Pigna with the almost tunnel-like walkways. Sadly, I only get three weeks of vacation per year so that doesn't give me time to stay in Italy as long as I want to. Keep up the awesome work - I look forward to the next one, and next one, etc.

I hope also the new narrated tours for archeoliogical places will be enjoyed, but these places are different... in towns I prefer like this. I also like that you like how I shoot the films... Indeed, it's so different from Rome and yet so close that it's almost astonishing to think... Just 1 hour drive from there so... Charming it is, though it does not have a strong hierarchic organization of spaces imposed on it, as one would find in many Italian towns and cities. Rome and Florence being the primary Baroque and Renaissance models, with their urban axial sequences. Sperlonga shows an organic evolution of connected inner and outer spaces, the entirety ultimately determined by the site's topography.
