Why is this Pesach Different From all Other Pesachs? | Pesach 5784

This Pesach has to be different from all others. In (many of) our lifetimes we cannot remember another Pesach when we were really worried that “shebechol dor vador omdim aleinu lechaloteinu”, when people were actually trying to destroy us. It seemed like something of the past. When we ate the bitter herbs, we didn’t really feel so bitter because life was (and is) so good. When we spilt the cup of wine for the blood, we didn’t really feel the spilling of blood.
But this year it is different.
There will be 1,500 chairs empty at the Seder table of those who have been killed in this war alone, 133 places for the hostages missing from the Seder, and therefore it has to be different this year.
We tell our children on this night what it is to be a Jew - it is challenging, and we tell our children there is maror, bitterness, and the matzah is not just the bread of redemption but also the bread of affliction. Our rabbis demand of us to see ourselves as if we came out of Egypt - and in our generation, when we have a State of Israel, we have so many waiting for people to come out of captivity.
This year our Pesach is even more realistic, we need to feel it all more than any other year. But, this year we can also appreciate what Jewish redemption means. Even though there is a threat, just like Pharaoh was defeated - “v’Hakadosh Baruch Hu matzileinu miyadam, Hashem saves us from their hands” - so too we will get past the Iranian threat.
If there is pain and challenge in life, we can deal with it. No matter how much bitterness there is, the story is one of redemption, of freedom. Embrace the challenges as through the challenges we will prevail, as we always have.
