I was there with my friends in the bleachers. Mattingly's home run landed two rows directly in front of us. I paused the video and all four of us are visible. Wow I never thought to look before. Tears in my eyes. The single greatest, loudest moment I have ever witnessed in person. The stadium itself was moving. A moment I will always cherish and never forget.

I was also there that night. And you’re 100% right about how loud it was. The upper deck was shaking. It also was crazy when Bernie got thrown out in the bottom of the 10th when Sierra hit a shot that went off the wall

Was there too - loge between first base and foul pole. You could actually get tickets day before because they Yanks barely made playoffs and it was one year after the strike. Place went nuts after Mattingly stadium was shaking for sure. Then same thing in bottom of 15th with Leyritz to win the game. Got home like 4:00am, took off work the next day. Best memory I have of the old stadium. Too bad they went to Seattle to lose the series. Donny Baseball's last game in Yankee Stadium.

This is my single favorite moment in professional sports history. I grew up as a kid in the 80s and the Yankees were not good as at that time it was Mets town, but the Yanks always had one thing I would have never traded for anything.....Don Mattingly. This may not have been a walkoff, a series winner, or even lead to a series win..but it was SUCH. A huge moment for the TRUE Yankee/Mattingly fans..I was never so excited and happy for a pro ball player as I was watching the captain finally get his shot. We all knew his back was shot and he was at the end, but he gave that his ALL in that series and for those 5 games, we were able to one last time see the Mattingly of old..the guy who was the best player in the world for about 5-6 years. He let it all hang out that series and he even retired with the best batting average off of Randy Johnson. Mattingly could hit anyone..and that home run was such a special moment because it truly encapsulated what he was about..passion, clutch, and class. And as he rounded the bases, you could see two things..you could see the crowd going nuts and his teammates being so excited and proud for him. He was their leader. He was our captain. He was Donnie Baseball. What a special player!

The Mattingly of 1982-1987 hit the ball consistently harder, at-bat to at-bat, as any Yankee I ever saw. Had there been a wildcard in 1985 the Yankees would have demolished anyone in their path, the Royals most of all.

I already loved the Yankees, but this made me obsessed. The crowd was deafening, Stadium shaking. I can still picture Ruben Sierra hitting the double off of the Left Field wall to tie the game in the 9th & Bernie getting thrown out at home plate as the game winning run. This scene alone is proof of how incredible Yankee Stadium was before they tore it down. Yes, it was the hallowed grounds of Babe, Lou, Joe, and Mickey. But even in the 90's and 2000's it was like no other sports venue - big, famous and loud like the city itself. It would eat you up if you let it. I took a tour when I was a kid and got to walk the warning track, see the clubhouse and Jeter's second locker solely for fan mail, and ultimately sit in Joe Torre's seat in the dugout and play with the phone. Although it pains me that this icon of Americana is gone, I will always cherish the memories of going there to watch some of the greatest who ever played

However, I do know that Mattingly was a great Yankee, a great captain, & would´ve made it to the Hall of Fame were it not for his back injuries.
