Cheers for the video, just wondering, do you not need to disconnect the negative terminal on battery before hardwiring camera? And would it be the same in the Hybrid?
I've been studying this mirror assembly. Compared to the OEM mirror, it sits very close to the roof line when installed. Where the original has a straight stalk, the replacement has a two part canted stalk. If one could mount the mirror so that it sat slightly lower, it would give the front cam a better field of view past the plastic cover. The most obvious method would be to reorient the two parts of the stalk such that the canted section pointed downwards as opposed to rearwards. I'd suspect that the canted portion is merely formed plastic screwed into the base so reorienting it should be simplistic. Certainly, its design seems to indicate that this would be possible. The other alternative would be to recreate the assembly (either in part in whole) via 3D printing but ideally this should be avoided for obvious reasons. The reason why I'm investigating this is that I'm really keen to get a dashcam plus I really hate the limited view that the OEM mirror provides. A complicating factor is that vehicles in NZ are right hand drive meaning the front cam is further away from the windscreen making the front cover an even bigger obstruction.
After a lot of consideration, I've changed my strategy... Having the mirror slightly lower would reduce the forward cover as an obstruction... Unfortunately, it's increased width (vs the OEM mirror) also means reduced view of the road from the drivers position... Something to be avoided where possible. I note that the replacement mirror projects quite a ways rearwards. If one could move it forwards then this would have the similar effect of reducing the cover as an obstruction. My best solution to this is to redesign a new base for the stalk, moving the attachment point lower & shortening it. 3D printing should make this a simple task. I'll have to wait for both the car & the mirror before I can start attacking this
It's taken a bit and I'm nowhere near finished but I can report on my results. The two piece mounting and stalk supplied with the Nikumaku are both cast metal. After much experimentation, the best solution was to rotate the two parts 180 degrees which results in the mirror mounting lower. Issues with the mounting facing in the wrong direction are easily addressed via a custom 3D printed bracket. This solution surprisingly places the mirror in the exact same place spatially as the original factory fitted mirror. Front camera view is still partially blocked by the cover but it only occupies the top right corner of the screen meaning the full width of the road ahead can be seen albeit only a narrow strip below the obstruction. I have thoughts about building a simple periscope to move the camera viewpoint lower. I designed a neat little housing for the rear camera which optionally can be attached via magnets. My design works well but I do have a gripe about the camera picture. Comparing the camera to a proper rear view mirror, the image appears 2-3 times further away making it a potential hazard if relying on it to pull into traffic. The part of this project that was surprisingly difficult was the electrical fitting. So much so, that I'm still working on it. I'm replacing an autodimming mirror which means there's already power to that location. However the plug/socket arrangement is so unusual that I can't find a third party supplier. Basically it uses 5 pins but with very narrow spacing. I suspect that the solution may be that I'll have to design my own plug to match it (groan). Temporarily I've used the supplied power cable but that's obviously not a long term solution. As mentioned, this is still under action but my expectation is that the autodimming mirror uses 12V and hence that's what's coming out of the car. As the Nikumaku uses 5V, I've sourced a buck converter from AliExpress which outputs via USB. It should then be easy to plug in the relevant USB cable. I've made my work available via Thingiverse for anyone who wants to go down a similar path (www.thingiverse.com/thing:4655894).
@@devilsadvocate2656 I suppose this project is long since completed but if not I was able to find some very thin flat Molex pins that push in from the rear or the mirror connector and sandwich between the plastic of the connector and the installed pin. I've found it quite reliable. I copied the idea from a kit available for powering a V1 radar connector I found on the Valentine web site.
Hello sir . Very good video. One question. What is the total length of wire from the camera mounted at the back of the vehicle to the monitor at the front of the vehicle?
I am buying a rav 4, but this doesn't come in the premium package, which is what I'm buying. We test drove one that had this setup. Could you provide info on what I would have to buy to have this added to my car please.
Hi. Do you have a video or could you make a video installing a Thinkware u1000 for RAV4 both the front and rear? Your skills being shown is deeply appreciated. :-)
The RAV4 has OEM backup camera. There is no need to connect this wire. It can be useful for cars without the backup camera. If you were to connect the mirror to the reverse wire, it would switch to the full image view with parking assist lines every time you switch into reverse.
can you program your garage door opener to be able to replace an OEM mirror capability which would have buttons to allow for adding a garage door signal?
Watching your vids is always dangerous as they usually give me "ideas". I have a RAV4 on order and due for delivery in a couple of months. I'm looking for a suitable dashcam and this certainly makes the mirror based dashcams look more attractive. My only criticism is that in my experience, these mirror based accessories don't support dimming (or in the case of cameras suffer from "flare") when used at night. Some kind of indication of where to buy the product from would also be useful. As someone who makes many items using his 3D printer, it would be simple to design & print a housing for the rear camera or (with a little more work) even manufacture the adaptor mount that adapts the swivel arm to the mirror. Just something to think about
Looked like it’s charging while driving for extended battery when the car is off. Notice the lightning bolt on the battery when powered on, like a cell phone charging
Perfiect, just what I'm looking for. I have one question: does it always record both front and rear at the same time regardless which camera you are viewing? Thx.
