A Percussion Life thanks ... ok. for me. the LP skin sound warm and very well tone balance. the manito skin sound really good... well balance. high and lows are good. the Reno is nice but very bright.... I like the LP skin. 👍👍
You should have compared the thickness of the skins. A thicker skin will “cut” some highs and overtones and give a rounder or warmer sound. LPs are known to be thin and dry from swimming for an extended time in a water bath. I’ve got some old school L&H heads that are the bees knees. I replaced LP on my quinto but left it on the tumba so it rings longer and easier than having to hit some power stroke on a thicker, more hefty steer skin. I think your style of play will benefit with the manolito. It should sit nicer when playing melodically and not crossover some frequencies with your other tumbadoras.
I used to play outside festivals a lot and synthetic heads were a must. They produce a lot of overtone sadly. What I found discussing with other percussionnists was that you can give them a light sanding to scratch the surface a tiny bit and then apply paraffine (Candle wax). It gives a little tickness to the skin and make them feel and sound a bit more natural. Cuts the overtones too.
Looks to me like the LP is probably broken in as opposed to the Manito skin as you said you just got it but wait until you put some sweat into it, you will hear a totally different sound, much warmer, dry' and talkative. On this video, to me the LP sounds better; the Remo, although a great synthetic head needs more tweaking when tuning and to me it takes a bit of adjustment on your hands to make it sound how you want it. just my take on it, thanks for posting.
Manito for sure, and by the way you rock those congas man. You inspire me to (Practice) more often. Keep them videos coming my brother, I’ll keep watching and Thanks for sharing!!!
I'm pretty new at congas and I have hand-picked on my original 1970s LP fiberglass congas... So I'm used to the hand-picked sound... Sounds like authentic old school mambo on the beach....The remo head has sound clean and crisp... like if I was going to record a song.... .but that dark skinned head makes me feel like I'm sitting next to a fireplace with a glass of wine, and a pretty lady... (romantic and delicious)
Omg I just spoke to you regarding conga heads and skins and here you already had a video explaining EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for replying back to me but more so for doing such a thorough and comprehensive comparison!
LP and Manito-heads sound amazing in their own way! Manito has this dark feel to it, slap is sharp as hell. And the LP has this clear, kind of youthful feel in the sound...both are awesome!
Eric it's all you fault I'm about to get thrown out of the house 🤪.my son bought me a PR flag matador conga and it was all over I started listening to you and learning to play when I saw this video. Manito is now my bestfriend. Now I'm a proud owner of 3 beautiful PR flags conga with manito mule skin heads ooooyaaaaaa. Thanks for inspiring me to say 56 is not to old to start playing. My set up consists of congas, decade maple drum set, lp matador timbales, and PR flag bongo, plus all the little thing to do a parada. Once again thanks from the bottom of my heart.
Nice...enjoying your videos very much. Thank you for sharing and I'm learning alot from your lessons. I've been playing about seven years and there's just still so much to learn bro. You're the real deal. Abrazos!
Hey Eric, the LP seems to appeal to me more so than Manito. Manito has a solid sound. Yet the LP skin sound Bronx 1965 street corner, Crotona park and in front of a 3rd Ave. Tenant building. I can almost hear the El train roaring above the drummers. Yeah!
Eric, the LP skins sound the best (sweeter & tighter tone). The Fiberskyn not bad but has noticeable ring as having reverb. The steer head is warmer than the LP head. It's just a personal preference. I know the Fiberskyn is easier on the hands. Thanks for sharing.
The beauty of the science of the skins was perfectly illustrated along with excellent technique demonstrated with your playing. Going with the Manito Steer Head beautiful pure tones.
I bought the fiberskyns to replace LP rawhides (water buffalo) and while I was happy with not having to retune, I hated the overtones/ring, and that excess overtone is evident on this video. I switched back to the LP heads and just ordered 3 Manito steer heads. Can’t wait to get them in less than a week!
I know the LP heads have a huge following, for their distinctive woody sound. I also love them. As soon as I got my palladiums I put on Manito Steer. I love their deeper, richer sound. I believe if you play well, they both sound great in their own way. But you can't deny the beauty of those Steer skins!
I think the standard rawhide l.p. is the best for the money. Remo lacks a certain "Soul' big full loud but... Your money honey head sounds wonderful but you are oversold on it Really the edge goes to standard l.p. rawhide .. For me is it Remo when a Poncho Sanchez blows sounds great...But he is Poncho Sanchez Pedrito makes L.p. sound tremendous Truly its the player not the head w a slight edge to natural The standard is fine Work on your touch and technique In Havana The old poor Caja player sounds great It is the drummer
The Manito head did it for me. Have been curious regarding the synthetics but now I know I would not bother. I understand the benefits of Mylar as I am a kit player as well but i I truly believe congas need their natural skins to feel and sound right. It's like pizza in a cup - it's a reasonable facsimile but just not the same... Really appreciating your channel Eric. Please keep sharing all this great stuff. Gotta love it!
Very nice comparison! I personally use synthetic head simply because of how much easier they are on your hands and because of how long they stay tuned. But the overtones are a huge con and they will never sound like a real skin head. The manito was my favorite, the lower tone sounds much better on a conga for me. Keep up the awesome work, you make us Salvadoreños proud!
Man... that's the Huge advantage of synth heads man... but yea the overtones have always been a deal breaker for me... I still switch to synth depending on where I'm playing (outdoors for example)... And thanks man! I try to represent us everywhere I go!
Manito's steer skin is the mellow tone that captured the drum's tonal qualities and, presumably, it has yet to even be "broken in" yet when the sound and slap will open up even more! I've had Manito's skins on mind for my fiber glass drums but because of the nature of fiberglass I'm thinking of even possibly Mule over Steer. I've purchased from various suppliers over time but have yet to buy from Manito.
From this video I'd say the LP has an undeniable classic sound that works well with that drum, the synthetic has more harmonic overtones but might be perfect for playing in a larger ensemble in a live situation for projection and maybe apparent volume, and the steer is the best all round for tonality ( sounds very very full ) . Hearing it at the lower pitch here doesn't quite allow us to hear what it does at a higher pitch like the LP head tuning.
Brother thanks for the comparison! I have Palladiums too, an I need new heads. I have been researching trying to find info on synthetic or natural. From your video the synthetic does not have the tone, warmth, or depth of sound that the natural skins have. The Manito sounds awesome too me on your drum, and so does the LP. So, now I have to decide on which natural head. Hmmmmm......... Thanks for the video and many blessings to you!
Great video! I like how you compare the three types of conga heads! I personally love playing on rawhide heads! I will try to get myself those Manito skins! “Beautiful” indeed!
Man I wish Remo still have those fiber skins available!!!!!! I love the way they sound and the way they feel. I was so hurt when I tried to order some and they kept telling me they were backordered then eventually said they were discontinued.
Yeaaaaa I do wish they were available still.. supposedly they were discontinued because the "Brown" part kept on ripping off.. That's when they introduced the Crimplock Symmetry versions.
Manito's sound really nice and warm, solid slaps really good! It seems you like it as well! I think next time we see you again, you will have them on all of your drums!
Bro I'm glad I got to hear your videos. That was a great Test of the skins the crazy thing is the 1st LP skin sounded really really good the 2nd one kind of sounded a little twiny but it's still killer and that last skin that you put on the dark 1 that was badd a** love the color anyway I'm gonna keep looking out for you my bro from the high desert California RayRay
Yeah, the Manito head sounds warmer and fuller. But Remo sounds more smooth and I like the slap tone. LP sounds bright and uncompromise but I've get used to it with the sound for a long time. My choice goes to REMO.
Awe man I already knew what day it was and was all set for my tutorial but good comparison video TBH the Manitos looked best but LP might have sounded a teeny tiny bit better but I would sacrifice that for that look on my set of congas. Keep doing your thing homeboy you got us all waiting til Thursday’s and hoping for that bonus Monday tutorial.Thank you and God bless you brother.
Oh snap! The Man! The Myth! The Legend! Watches my videos!!!??? haha Thanks bro! And I totally agree with you. The Remo gives such a vibe for salsa gigs.
Manito´s sound so much fuller, richesr. They ring in a very pleasant way, not too much and not dry at all (compared to the LP that to my taste is way too dry!) fantastic heads!! I wish I´d live in the US to get them! Saludos Eric
I really like the Manito skin I have recorded on the same skin with Isla Conga’s it gave me a Great Power Sound. Playing with Lp Skin you like everybody . I think you found your trademark sound keep up the great work with your videos love and peace bro Johnny Blas
hola , soy de Mexicali baja california , están muy bien tus videos, donde consigues esos parches manito? suenan y se ven muy bien , saludos , sigue subiendo videos... la verdad sirven mucho!!!
Thx for this. Wish you did this two months ago when I was searching all over for replacement heads!! I also bought two steer skins from Manito. I only mounted one so far and love it. But I can't really say yet whether I like it better than the old Remo cowhide. I liked the brighter slap of the remo but I bet the Manito records and blends better. I think its the most musical head in your video too even though I also liked the other two. So I think I'm going to mount the Manito conga head this weekend and be 100% Manito. (I liked that it was Peruvian sourced too. My wife's Peruvian)
LOve the Manito! Full, round, resonant, pleasant floral overtones, with plenty of spanky highs and good bass. The Remo is interesting. very bright with great overtones but lacks the depth and bass. LP was ok. This from a noob who knows little to nothing about percussion. Thanks Eric! BTW what thickness was the Manito?
Great video thanks!!! I love the manito skin, It’s awesome! I currently use LP rawhide and I love it. I definitely going to purchase a manito skin, what’s Skin thickness is the one you using? Extra thick 2mm - 2.5mm? Thick 1.6mm - 2mm?
This is awesome thank you for the video! I have a few question and or suggestions. Are the skins tuned up to the same note? It doesn’t sound as if they are. Probably you can load a video with each skins tuned to the same key. The LP sounds really good crisp and the tone is clear. The fiberskyne has to much ring. The Manito looks cool but I cannot make a proper assessment on the sounds since it seems as if it is tuned lower. I personally use TB skins from Colombia Tambores Baranquilla I can send you a demo through messenger.
Hi friend. I am French and if my English is ok tengo un poquitobmas dificultades on mi castillano. Could uou be so lind to send me rhe website internet addres of this company selling conga skins in Barranquilla ? Vaya con Dios Thierry
A tip for using synthetic heads on congas.Try rubbing a small amount of pure West African Shea butter on your hands and into the synthetic head before you play My experience is that it gives the head a little warmer sound, less ring Also,it gives the smooth some texture and grip like a real skin would have.Best thing about synthetic heads, less wear and tear on your drum hardware from the constant tuning up and down that some musicians put on congas with real skin.
Through this audio what sound the best were the original skin but very difficult to really give a true answer without the feel like we see you with your obvious choice. Hahaha. You sound great bro. Bless Up
They all sound fantastic when being used by someone who knows how to play, but my observation listening on noise canceling headphones, the lp sounds great, the fiberskyn3, which is what I have on my 14" dejembe, has a hint of the dreaded "remo ring" just as mine does, but that last one the cowhide or whatever ooh baby that's sweet sweet money and beautiful just screams quality. If you really want to hear the subtle differences put on a pair of decent headphones
I have tried remo and lp skin on my patatos and always go back to the lp skin. Manitos on my old matador quinto sounds great but lp skins on the tumba and conga
Manito's got great heads. Lp calfskins are ok and get better as they break-in. Never cared much for fiberskyns, however they have their place. Have you tried any skyndeep heads? Don't have them where I live. Thanks for the comparison Bro!
Hard to really tell since the LP skin is cranked so much higher than the manito, but the natural tones of the manito head to me are much nicer.. even though tuned lower. The fiberskin.. well it sounds like a fiberskin. Nice demo!
The LP seemed pretty rich and reserved. Very dry in comparison to the others. The Remo was the opposite. Very resonant, lots of harmonics and overtones. I liked the Manito head. It seemed like a hybrid of the two. Very rich, but also very open and responsive.
Eric have headphones on to get better tone & I prefer the LP head waaaay more may be nuts to you but it goes with my LP Giovanni galaxy congas so that is what I go for. The steer heads sound great on your congas but mine are different than what you have!!! As for the Luis Conte congas that I will get later I know prefer the Buffalo rawhide heads on them!!!
My ears are bleeding, listening to that Remo skin. So much ringing...The LP head is quite acceptable, but the Steer one is, to my taste, candy for the ear. Of course, it is all a matter of taste, and you are right, the skin in only part of the sound. I really enjoy your videos. Well done!
A good horn player can make even cheap horns sound great. The same could be said here. But I think I like the LP for its tone and the Manito for the slap that sounds like you're chopin wood. Just like it should! But I also like it's tone tho it sounded like it was tuned lower. The Remo still sounds good but the tone sounds a little thin compared to the others. Great video. I'm also trying to decide which to get for my Matador conga where I have sensitive hands that got messed playing in groups that wanted to drown me out. So might have to go with Remo.
Ain’t being a creep but man,you make all of them sound good! The rawhide is definitely warmer IMO but that Manito head is something else! The slaps really stand out on that skin! But I’m gonna be stealing all your riffs though....... tasty! thanks!
Those Manitoba sound great, but personally, I prefer the Remo fiberskin heads for convenience, since it is humid where I live. They definitely have more overtones and I put moongels or tape on the under side to compensate for that.
Hey dude I do love LP I think the sound awesome and the best maybe because I love sound of Giovani . Never like fibreglass skin, But I have to admit the brownskin sound deep. Bless!
Hello. Great video. After your watching your video I will buy the Manito head but they have different thickness. Which one did you get the thick, medium or thin one?
I would say the Rawhide got first place more warmer and smooth I give themanito steer Head second place a bit louder but not as good sounding as the Rawhide skin and 3rd place to the Fiberskyn the sound however is brighter and louder but not as rich sounding.
Nice to listen and compare....I think I have to agree with you as the tone of the steer head has such depth. The other two were good too and the fibreskyn had an interesting dry kind of sound to it. Was the LP one buffalo?
Not a synthetic fanatic although there've been some moments attributed to Remo ,fyberskin and nuskyn where I've raised an eyebrow. Manito tone is impressive and absolutely sexy in appearance. I'd have to mount them on my skin on skins for test try however before going all in. Thanks por el video..
I've played all of those heads and i still feel the same. Manito's skins are some of the best out there bar none. Those dark steer skins are amazing!! The remo skins are good too but they have their place. I'm cool w synth skins. I'm def not a prude like some ppl. I really don't like the hand picked skins lp uses at all. I don't like the feel either but I won't lie they really didn't sound bad at all man. Buuuuut Manito takes it!!
I have been told that synthetic heads do not change tone with changes in the temperature and humidity. My leather heads do , but I like the sound so before I spend 100$ plus to get synthetic, I would like to verify this.
Hello sir. I just wanted to start by saying you sfe so inspiring to me. I have a question. I own a pair of LP Aspire congas (I'm taking up this instrument recently), and I am really curious about enhancing the sound. Manitos website doesnt specifically say they work for LP Aspire series. Do you find that as long as the size of the conga matches the size of the head, it will work out? Thanks in advance, and looking forward to more videos! 🎶🎵
If you want to in inhance the sound of your congas get yourself Luis Conte congas LP Aspire congas are great for starting out but when you need better sound yes I know what is more affordable than LP so hope this helps!!!!
Which did you Prefer?
A Percussion Life thanks ... ok. for me. the LP skin sound warm and very well tone balance.
the manito skin sound really good... well balance. high and lows are good. the Reno is nice but very bright....
I like the LP skin. 👍👍
A Percussion Life sorry... miss spell... Remo. Remo... a very good company and respect. I have a nu skin on my quinto. 👍
The manito sounds great. Warm all around. Deep opens!
I say LP man!
You should have compared the thickness of the skins. A thicker skin will “cut” some highs and overtones and give a rounder or warmer sound. LPs are known to be thin and dry from swimming for an extended time in a water bath. I’ve got some old school L&H heads that are the bees knees. You made them all sound good 👍..so now im confused lol.

The LP seems a bit more responsive, but the tone of the Manito is incredible.
Love to hear that steer head tuned to the same open note as the LP. Don't even mention that plastic thing. Love the vids!
Manito for sure, and by the way you rock those congas man. You inspire me to (Practice) more often. Keep them videos coming my brother, I’ll keep watching and Thanks for sharing!!!
Es ovio lo que el esta haciendo!
I'm pretty new at congas and I have hand-picked on my original 1970s LP fiberglass congas... So I'm used to the hand-picked sound... Hahahaha probably the most detailed description of an LP head haha
I agree. I'm from the Boogie Down.
El Bronx!,,
Home is where my heart is..Bronx.
Definitely the Manito Percussion head!! More tonality, more volume, more flavor and more body presence in the sound!!!
I really dig my Remo Nu Skyn. I think it sounds much more authentic than the Fiberskyn.
I prefer the sound of the LP on that drum. Great useful demo. Thank you.
Fiberskyns have improved much. Mine sound great but, Rawhides just have that authentic sound.

You are probably my Favorite RUclips conguero! Thanks for your help, God bless.
A great video. Love the editing. Very well done! Great playing , too!
Thanks Michael!
I think the standard rawhide l.p. is the best for the money.
Remo lacks a certain
"Soul' big full loud but...
Your money honey head sounds wonderful but you are oversold on it
Really the edge goes to standard l.p. rawhide .. For me is it
Remo when a Poncho Sanchez blows sounds great...But he is Poncho Sanchez
Pedrito makes L.p. sound tremendous
Truly its the player not the head w a slight edge to natural
The standard is fine
Work on your touch and technique
In Havana
The old poor Caja player sounds great
It is the drummer
I personally like the steer #1 the rawhide #2 The synthetic a distant #3. I re-headed all my congas with steer heads. Love them!
The Manito head did it for me. Have been curious regarding the synthetics but now I know I would not bother. I understand the benefits of Mylar as I am a kit player as well but i I truly believe congas need their natural skins to feel and sound right. And thanks man! I try to represent us everywhere I go!
Fabricio Aleman totally agree
Manito's steer skin is the mellow tone that captured the drum's tonal qualities and, presumably, it has yet to even be "broken in" yet when the sound and slap will open up even more! I've had Manito's skins on mind for my fiber glass drums but because of the nature of fiberglass I'm thinking of even possibly Mule over Steer. I've purchased from various suppliers over time but have yet to buy from Manito.
I like the lows on the Manito. I like the highs on remo. I’d use the Manito on my low tumba.
Man, that steer head is AMAZING! That tone is delicious!!! And that color? Damn!!
U have really improved on your vids through out your years!!!!!!!!love your vids brother
Oddly enough, I like the sound of the LP. Maybe it’s because the heads are made for the drum. I like the way it resonates.
The...LP s..sound so much better...
Cesar Colon I agree
Agreed, got them on in collage so when i buy a pair of congas that's what I'll be using!
Yes agreed for to me each conga is different & you just go with what heads you like & LP is my fave also for my LP Giovanni galaxy congas!
A Percussion Life I have the skyndeep on all 3 drums. They sound pretty good but I like the way your Rawhide sounds on those Palladiums.
Manito's sound really nice and warm, solid slaps really good! It seems you like it as well! I think next time we see you again, you will have them on all of your drums!
lpsalsaman hahaha that might be a possibility hahaha
Bro I'm glad I got to hear your videos. Wow hands down Manito heads would be my choice ,thanks for the vid amigo.

Bgrowdy1 hahaha there’s gonna be two next week! I got you!
I love all three but for Salsa gigs I personally prefer The Remo head great videos God bless you my brother 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Oh snap! The Man! The Myth! The Legend! Watches my videos!!!??? haha Thanks bro! And I totally agree with you. The Remo gives such a vibe for salsa gigs.
Hahaha.. The Pizza delivery man...LoL. Erik Piza
I rather have Digernos Pizza. LMAO. Saludos a los dos!!!
Hola Eric, me pareció excelente la comparación entre ambos parches de conga👏, podrías hacer una comparación con parches de bongó?? 👍
Manito´s sound so much fuller, richesr. They ring in a very pleasant way, not too much and not dry at all (compared to the LP that to my taste is way too dry!) fantastic heads!! I wish I´d live in the US to get them! Saludos Eric
I prefer the sound of rawhide but I actually have Fiberskyn heads. Not having to re-tune everything every hour because of the weather is so good!
Love the steer hide too! Also the rawhide and steer seem to have more depth than the synth. All good though.

Me gustó el sonido de los tres diferentes parches, pero me encantó el de cuero LP. "Cuero na má".
The fiberskyns on my Patatos sound great . The LP skins sound great on my Vintage wood LP'S
2mm thick... that has been my fav thickness for a conga
Vaya con Dios
Thierry
You sound awesome on all 3 skins!
I actually like them all- they're all different, but good. The trick is to play well and TUNE well. I say buy the cheapest one of the 3!
This chocolate beauty was unique, but I guess most demanding of all of the three.
Thanks for the video Eric
Eric have headphones on to get better tone & I prefer the LP head waaaay more may be nuts to you but it goes with my LP Giovanni galaxy congas so that is what I go for. The steer heads sound great on your congas but mine are different than what you have!!! As for the Luis Conte congas that I will get later I know prefer the Buffalo rawhide heads on them!!!
Damn, that Manito Steer Skin is sexy AF 😵 But I'd have to say the OG LP Rawhides are my fave* ;)
I like the sound of the LP.and sounds the best.
So might have to go with Remo.
the domineering sound, to me personally is the LP Rawhide...No Doubt
Ain’t being a creep but man,you make all of them sound good! The rawhide is definitely warmer IMO but that Manito head is something else! The slaps really stand out on that skin!
But I’m gonna be stealing all your riffs though....... tasty! thanks!
Manitos are amazingly beautifully sound
Those Manitoba sound great, but personally, I prefer the Remo fiberskin heads for convenience, since it is humid where I live. They definitely have more overtones and I put moongels or tape on the under side to compensate for that.
Manitos...Lol, stupid autocorrect.
Both sounds amazing
LP just sounds better in my opinion...great vid...
Marc Knight I think the different is the tuning👈
Yeah LP for me too!!!
Hey dude I do love LP I think the sound awesome and the best maybe because I love sound of Giovani .
Never like fibreglass skin, But I have to admit the brownskin sound deep.
Bless!
I totally agree with Percussion777 (for the same reasons) (the LP skins reminds me a lot Giovanni`s sound) !!
What's up Eric, love the vid's, keep'em coming. Manito skins hands down!!
You make all three sound good I like them all
The manito steer head sounds great!
Hello. Great video. After your watching your video I will buy the Manito head but they have different thickness. Which one did you get the thick, medium or thin one?
Great!!! I got what’s considered “extra thick” which is anything over 2mm in thickness... on what size drum are you putting the head on?
I would say the Rawhide got first place more warmer and smooth I give themanito steer Head second place a bit louder but not as good sounding as the Rawhide skin and 3rd place to the Fiberskyn the sound however is brighter and louder but not as rich sounding.
Nice to listen and compare....I think I have to agree with you as the tone of the steer head has such depth. The other two were good too and the fibreskyn had an interesting dry kind of sound to it. Was the LP one buffalo?
Lembrando que nada substitui o estudo veja que ele toca bem e tira um som perfeito em qualquer pele parabéns
i play on Manito bongos natural stear and luv it. i also luv moperc thick cowskin. Try out Moperc thick skins, deep solid sound and feel.
Jakethemase moperc are ok...heavy like hell not a fan of the skin...i like the roberto quintero gon bops much more....
And i 💘 the Dark Color and the fact that thete s no name on thd Manilto!
Hello Eric, I liked the Manito sound the best…..which head it exactly and how thick is it…? Thank you…
i put manito skins on my LP's, they are sooo much better now
what LP's are they? i'm thinking of getting it for my '95 and '99 matador congas. did you get the darker steer skins?
Nice vid, have to say I like the LP the best.
I DON'T LIKE THE HAND PICKED SKINS LP NEITHER SINCE THE 70S AND I DONT KNOW WHY??? AND HE IS THE WINNER HERE. MY EARS SAID SO:---)
I have been told that synthetic heads do not change tone with changes in the temperature and humidity.
I prefer the rawhide but living here in Florida I have no choice. the Manito sound good. Just like the slap sounds on rawhide.
Love the LP and Steer. To much overtone with the synthetic. Synthetic more for stick than hands in my opinion. Love your skills brother...🤙🏼
Rt on good vids you have keeping coming bro in the manito is that thin thick or extra thick thx again for your vids good stuff Mano
LP RAWHIDE in 1st place to me
