It should be connect with a union, that’s a removable fitting so it can be serviced and the pipe can be pressure test, helps to cut the pipe straight. It will work , I would never put my name to it!

Yeah I’m with you but these old single speed pumps most of them will be replaced by variable speed pumps once they die they it’s always a union
