    My daily driver for a year now has been a 1996 ZX turbodiesel. Banged up as it is, I find it an upgrade over my previous ride, a mk2 VW Golf -also turbodiesel. The Golf died on a Friday and I needed a car to go to work the next Monday and a very limited budget... I love the ease of the ride, the overall comfort, how quiet the engine is compared to the 1.6 vw tractor-like engine... who would have thought two years ago I´d be the proud owner of not one, but two Citroëns!!!

    Love the ZX 1.9D Avantage. Owned an early 1992 model, without PAS or a catalytic converter. Brilliant, as no computers in it, just mechanical diesel injection. Still going strong after nine years of ownership, when it was 17 years old, and has 187,000 miles on it. Stupidly scrapped it, as didnt want to pay the £250 MOT work, as had just bought an Alfa 916 GTV as well.

    A very fair summary, Ian. My pre-owned ZX diesel was comfy, cheap to run, easy to maintain... Being too skint to risk a failed turbo (mortgage rate was 14%!) I chose normally aspirated. Never mind 0-60mph times, I needed to get around reliably and in comfort. Handling suffered a tad with the big front diesel lump in a relatively small body, but was never alarming. I recall lots of pleasant, untroubled French touring, easily cruising at 100+kph for hours. Rear wheel bearings are a known ZX issue.

    That brought back some memories - years ago I owned a 1994 ZX Aura with the same engine. It remains the most reliable car I've owned, bar my current 1996 Daihatsu Charade. I called it my French Corolla. In three years of ownership and a lot of travel (33,000 hard driven kilometres in one year) aside from regular servicing, I replaced a few light bulbs. It was comfortable, nicely built, very economical and the slugging torque of the engine more than made up for the leisurely gathering of pace. It could tow well too. Replaced by a beautiful green Xantia SX Turbodiesel.

    I drove down from Edinburgh to Milton Keynes years ago on a works course, they hired me a Citroen zx at first I turned my nose up and wasn't happy but it was the most comfortable drive down as it was the top of the range diesel one at the time, my back normally kills me on long journeys but that was a great car, never judge a book by its cover was the motto of that.

    HubNut, if you need to get a bearing into a drum, put the bearing in the fridge and the drum in the oven at a low temperature. The central hole will expand and the bearing will drop right in (use a smidgen of oil to lubricate and help get it in.
    Allow the temperature to normalise at room temperature then fit the drum on the spindle (obvs check the spindle isn't broken.)
    saves on the garage bearing press fee.

      @Graham_Langley 5 лет назад +2

      I remember the first time I did that with an Imp gearbox bearing. Case in the low oven, bearing in the freezer overnight and the initial clearance was enough for the bearing to rattle as it dropped in. Very satisfying.

    It was a lot of car for the money, well equipped, nice to drive but let me down a few times with unknown electrics issues and a leak in the passenger footwell in heavy rain which would fog the car up if you turned on the blower! Still, some fond memories of that car!

    Birmingham Art Gallery & Museum is one of the great museums outside London. It's mix of displays is it's appeal. Brake lights on in traffic, maybe they are driving an automatic? I only put mine in neutral if I'm going to be stationary for more than a minute or so. I don't know how you survive all the obstacles of these capers. The fear of braking down would stress me to much.

    I bought a new ZX 1.9d in 1993 and kept it for 14 years and 248k miles with regular servicing. It had no engine faults nor wheel bearings in that time just the usual steering/suspension bushes , batteries and exhausts replaced also new shocks all round.
    A fairly slow but comfortable and quick steering car.

    The most fun you can have for £4. My first clue at something being suspect would be a whole car being raffled for such a low sum...
    Something about Citroën styling really appeals to me. Years ago when I was studying I was caught by someone inspecting their Pallas, and she was nice enough to give me a tour of it -- the cylinder speedometer really caught my attention, but overall I thought it was a fascinating car.

    Didn’t the ZX share running gear with the Peugeot 306? I looked at a ZX brand new (someone else was footing the bill), but no one came to sell me anything in the showroom! I eventually ended up with a 306 normally aspirated 1.9litre diesel. Fantastic motor. It did 230k miles and never missed a beat, good in snow, good on motorways, good in rural settings (N Yorks & then N Devon).

    About 6 years ago I bought a then 17 year old ZX 1.9d and it was the most frugal car, with a satisfyingly basic diesel engine. Very uncomplicated and nice to slowly cruise about in. I bought it as a conscious effort to run a car for peanuts and i seem to remember averaging low 60s MPG. Unfortunately it got written off when it was T-boned, but the insurance company paid out and allowed me to keep it.

    Drove a ZX 1.4 Reflex a few times around 1994. The exterior and interior design was absolutely dull comparing to other Citroen cars such as the GS/GSA, BX and the CX however was very pleasant to drive and comfortable. 1.9 TU engines were quite bullet proof. 👍

    • @utubeleplague
      @utubeleplague 5 лет назад +1

      I like the ZX interior, design wise is very simple (compared to older Ctroens is rather boring), but quality was quite the very best Citroen when it released! Soft touch materials everywhere on the dash that look shiny even today, more soft touch on the doors mixed with cloth. Seats are comfy and don't get cut by seating on them (unless you purposely cut them with a knife), the few plastic on vents, buttons, door handles etc are not easily broken also. I'd say, quality wise, it marked a turn for Citroen.

    That bearing looks scary! My family is quite fond of those folding aluminium scooters with 12 cm wheels (glorified kids' toys) and I have to admit they're handy - you can get to about double pedestrian speed on shorter distances and when you need to go further you just fold them and get on a bus, tram or underground train.
    Anyway, one day my girlfriend complained that her scooter's rear wheel felt a bit floppy. I picked up the thing and there was at least a full cm of play! Took everything apart and found very little - I think there were only two balls left or so, the others had either fallen out or ground to dust, as had most of the washers in there. Sourcing the various spacers was fairly tricky but I got everything sort-of working, the rear wheel was still a bit stiff though. The whole adventure ended when she left the scooter somewhere, never to find it again.
    Shredded bearings are a lot less scary at 5 MPH than at 70 though :-D

      Sid Sexist are they any cheaper there? Thanks to scrappage scheme, nostalgia and worldwide knowledge of bleedin' everything, there are few mysterious finds left in old garages next to creepy old houses where the owner intercepts you wearing a trilby, a sports jacket with reinforced elbows and brandishing a shotgun. Unless of course you're in Oaklahoma or the east Lancs area. As an old(er) driver I would still love to drive old trucks/buses/cars for a living. If I can ever get universal basic income, I'll do it for free. I dislike "millennial" motors - cannot stand all the technology. No computer-assisted-crap please and I don't mind double-de-clutching.

      That's the passive rear wheel steering for you, you can feel it work when you turn in, elegant and effective. I still think my ZX was one of the best cars I had for dependable, comfortable motoring and BMW could learn a thing about designing manual seat adjusters that don't require the ability to levitate from Citroen. The telescopic height adjuster in the ZX is so good.

      If you have the chance, look into the Xsaras as well. Same platform but everything else improved (except the design for me at least). The phase 1 are generally cheaper and still have the same engines of the ZX but have much more equipment starting the powered steering which most ZX didn't have it as standard. And every Xsara had AC, are safer also because they had 4 airbags as standard.

    I take it Adrian had a non-speaking part so you could pay the lower Equity rate? Handy he is a fellow ZX-er though !!
    I once had a Morris 1800 Landcrab where a front wheel bearing went. I pulled the hubcap off and a hand full of ball bearings fell out and rolled away. Me and a mate got a new bearing and fixed it by the roadside - the 80's were sooooo different. Loads of car spares shops and shops in garage forecourts that all sold all sorts of car spares over the counter - none of this order it in and we'll have it by Wednesday nonsense.
    The irony of Hubnut's problems being caused by in effect the hub nut is not lost on us !!

      Darren Wison, I also miss the good old days when motorist shops and petrol stations sold proper car spares and sundry useful items, rather than today's equivalents offerings of Costa coffee and Turtle Wax.
