- A new study found that black plastic items found in home products could contain bromine, a toxic flame retardant, through recycled electronics. Dr. Leonardo Trasande, professor of pediatrics and population health at NYU Langone Health, joins CBS News to break it down.

I am so sick of it being a full time job just trying to keep myself healthy just so i can get up and go tf to work and try to afford things that wont slowly sicken me
Thank you. Great point
Bromine is literally something they put in food. Why is it only a problem when it's not in Mountain Dew? Anyway I am agreeing with you. I think of my longevity and health every day and every new finding is another lifestyle change I have to do.
The problem is governments around the world allow for this crap to be manufactured. Plastic takeout containers or anything with a plastic coating should should never be allowed. Chinese takeout used to always be in the white cartons, now they are either in styrofoam plastic.
@@thenightporteron the flipside, there are numerous governments that ban half the stuff that the US allows companies to poison us with. Money is more important than a person smh
They've been slowly been killing us for decades and have known about all this toxic plastic crap
watching this while suspiciously eyeballing the only plastic utensil i own: a black plastic spatula. 😮
if it was cheap chinese stuff, just throw it away.
@@nonya.bizness yup. Just made eggs this morning with a black spatula 🫠
maybe check for wooden spatulas?
Throw it away

So, using toxic plastic spatulas on toxic teflon pans. Hooray!
🤪
@@luigi55125 I have a folder for things like this labeled 'fda fail'. I still add to it but haven't looked in there in a while, too depressing
As long as you don’t use a metal spatula on the Teflon pan.
Haha. Yeah... New "safe" Teflon... and "safe" silicon utensils
joy con boys
And you cant even sue them. THEY KEEP POISONING US AND TELLING US IT IS OUR FAULT.
See, they can keep selling but at the end of the day, it is us that buy it. So time to not buy them & buy other utensils that are made from steel. Expensive yes, but way safer & lasts longer too.
Exactly
@@KKimmu88🤪
So basically, instead of bearing the cost of safe disposal as a toxic waste product the plastics are 'upcycled' into consumer products.
It’s a horrible cycle. Plastic has always known to be toxic at all levels. We produce and consume more than can be reasonably burned so recycled plastic became another option. Unfortunately, the risk increases due to heat and malleability. It would be better to not even create the plastic, till then short term costs of cheap plastic are going to cost people’s health
Yup. Exactly
Well, that's good news. I'm keeping mine for the class action lawsuit because I don't have the receipt!
It’s almost like we should just… get rid of plastic? Because it sucks
The answer is clear. Michael J. Fox needs to travel back in time to ensure the inventor of plastic never becomes a chemist!
He also needs to stop murdering people
And stops dt from becoming Biff
There are earth friendly plastics, but they're struggling to break into the market because the oil industry is so powerful.
Another thing is that a lot of people tend to cook at higher temps than they probably should, which also accelerates breakdown and leaching.
so youre saying my food should be raw
I NEVER used such pans. I mean - you can see the material diminishing. I have decided to not eat that....
And never understand why someone eats burned plastic....?
I think consumers become more and more out of touch with their body and taste.
Over time they have become accustomed to more and more processed food.
They accept 'peach in a can' !!! LMAO
@@psychospartan3007 Most people are prone to burning their food.
@@volkerengels5298Get off your high horse bro. You're not better than me just because you use stainless steel pans and spatulas. I for one cannot afford to replace any of my cookware, and i didn't choose to live in a world oversaturated with cheap & toxic products.

Well, it is time to throw out… everything!
Nanoplastics are in the environment, you can’t escape plastic and it’s negative effects.

So don’t go outside and throw away everything… got it!

Plastic doesn’t contain microplastics. Microplastics are plastics that fall off the main item. Everything plastic leaves microplastics.
Well hell…I need to throw out everything and start from scratch apparently

@@angryox3102 all's we can do is try to utilize the best info we have at the time and be ready to adapt when new info is available. Three black plastic spatulas just went in the trash. Disturbing. I’m switching to bamboo.
Stainless steel is probably a better bet. Bamboo will likely be treated with some chemical to get it to market.
why isnt this a national breaking news! it affect all of us!
Big Oil doesn't want it to be news.
I think this kinda stuff (products being toxic) has been national news for a couple decades at least. But national news isn't enough to fix the power structures that enable this stuff.
Because all this stuff adds to capitalism. They don't want everyone knowing, as it will shown down certain industries and money it contributes to.
So why are the people whose job it is to ensure products are safe or meet guidelines not getting sacked? So much for recycling, it just mixes bad stuff with everything else.
Because the regulators are not well funded or empowered to actually enforce the laws
Thank you Dr. !!!! WE NEED MORE PROFESSIONAL LIKE YOU!!!!
Up to 23,000 ppm?? Holy cow that's so bad.. I feel stupid for using these now
don’t feel stupid. it’s not like anybody warned you ahead of time. people expect that day to day goods that cost a normal price have no reason to be too good to be true, you know? it’s not like it’s obvious which things sold in our grocery stores are dangerous scams and which are just regular products, especially in this case where the main difference is color, which seems like such a superficial detail.
Shocked that the result of oil industry lobbying (not science) results in more problems 🤦🏽♂️
We should never have introduced plastic in items that would come into contact with food. Glass has been used forever and can be recycled. Bring back the milk man!
just FYI "every can of food, soda, and beer is lined with PFAS " and BPA free just uses a "sister" chemical. being warned about black plastic is a distraction much like carbon neutral or clean coal
I’ve always used stainless steel pans and utensils they’re just as cheap as plastic ones that end up breaking faster anyway
Come on!!! Give us realistic numbers! Such as how many plastic spatulas can I eat before the bromine itself causes actual problems to my health.
Don't use plastic lids on your coffee drinks (or any drinks for that matter). You might as well just drink fire retardant.
Yea, this info's about 20 years too late
They put brominated vegetable oil in soda...? Why are they acting like this is an issue when no one is drinking spatulas. What a joke
*buys all new silicone kitchenware*
Hmmm, not so sure... 😬You might want to research silicone limitations. General max temp for silicone cookware and bakeware is 428 degrees - check individual manufacturer specs. Also, silicone isn't safe for dishwasher high heat drying. I have some silicone ice cube trays - i.e. for large square cubes, still not recommended for dishwasher, and may pick up an off scent/odor if food/beverage is kept in tray for a while.
They need to check every plastic kitchen tools
This doctors is obviously anti-plastic, yet staying away from cooking or warming of recycled plastics appears to prevent bromide exposure. Just cook with bamboo or wooden spatulas, and reheat with microwaveable glass containers. All other lower temp use seems OK, imo, just don't freak out.
We, as consumers just blindly accept products sold to us. Trust in corporate products, marketing and regulatory agencies (that are overwhelmed by the number of new products and underfunded to handle the onslaught) is just given. Consumers are exhausted by corporate gaslighting. Thank you CBS for reporting on this AND for giving advice on how to avoid the chemicals/leeching. I’d add that wood utensils are also a safer alternative along with stainless steel. However - do not use stainless steel or any hard utensil on non-stick cookware. You’ll be eating those chemicals used in “non-stick.” Like he said, stainless steel & cast iron is the way. Learn how to make stainless steel non-stick. It’s easy! And right here on RUclips.
This guy doesn't know that cast iron pans are now made with coatings and there are no glass pots and pans in most stores. The metal flippers I doubt are any better they get coatings too and are not made from stainless steel. Everything is so cheaply made now. With no helpful regulation.
Thank you for reporting this😮
I knew these but Why did I wait so long to stop buying them and throw away this toxic kitchen tool?!!!
Thanks for the heads up. I'm replacing mine.
I wish I would of knew about this two years ago. When I bought my pot and pan set. That basically came with plastic spatulas, spoons and nonstick pans.
I've been planning on buying a stainless steel set of utensils for a while now. The only thing, they aren't as cheap. So will have to save up and hope it's something I'll have for the next 10 years or so?
WHAT IN THE SHOES
I literally ran to the comments 🏃
What in the Bath
What is in the shoes or the bath?😂
what in the diddy
Yep, this "guys" choice in footwear is far more toxic than any kitchen utensil 🤢
Girl what doesn't have harmful chemicals 😭
I think it's time to make the change and make my cast iron camping cook gear and stainless, as my kitchen gear as well.
This is why I only use wooden utensils
Sh..t, my favorite spatula is black plastic.☹️
We gotta go back to hemp, hemp instead of wood so we dont have to cut down a buch more trees for wooden utensils.
What about automobiles. The dashes are made of plastic and it’s been shown that the heat through the windshield causes its plastic to give off a gas, which is what ranks our windshields on the inside dirty but what are these gases doing to our bodies as we sit in a confined car breathing in The air conditioned possibly toxic air?
That's what "new car small" is. Toxic off-gassing from plastics, glue, electronics, etc. Manufactures recommend not sitting in the car with the windows rolled up for weeks to months after purchase... Good reason to never buy a new car, but older cars have their own issues when the interior materials, such as the foam in the seats start to break-down into a fine powder, or as mold grows in the interior behind the trim
Use good wooden utensils. Don’t use any plastics.
of course i’m worried about myself, but what comes to mind next is this: too bad for people who live around the places these things are made, given that plastic companies dump plastic pellets in the water and burn off chemicals on rainy days right here in the US.
Glad i found that stainless steel spatula my father/mother used to cook everything with even before my birth......I just realized that spatula is 40 years old Jesus. I have broken my fair share of glass containers/plates but to this day i still use glass containers/plates.
What about all those cheap black plastic forks and spoons? Those go directly into the mouth...
Can’t wait for the late 2020s to finally put that 2010s trend of “Silicone is better than wood and metal” bs to rest.
What about heat resistant spatulas that you can use when cooking? I have a red one. Are these also unsafe to use? Please CBS NEWS read the comments and clarify for us. And if anyone here knows please clarify. Thanks. …
I’m so glad I didn’t purchase the black electric hand mixer with black whisks. I don’t like the black aesthetic anyway so that kept me from purchasing it. Thank goodness!! 😅
He said ALL plastic, even non-recycled "virgin" plastic, is toxic, Plastic is yet another toxic product pushed upon us by big oil companies. First, they destroy our planet, then they poison us, all to make get rich!
Never liked plastic cooking utensils. But yikes black plastic is just about everywhere else
As one scientist said we are literally drowning ourselves in Plastic World Wide 🌎🌍🌎🌍 the Artic Ocean has the most micro plastic then All the other Oceans!!!
I think the gulf coast with all of it's petrochemical companies (which produce the "nerdals" ie. the pellets that become our plastic products) may be higher. Bloomberg originals just put out a video with the details
We've been using them for years. Someone get bored & look for something to panic about? Or did someone change the materials used!?
So, how do we dispose of the plastic cooking utensils? Throwing out in household trash to pile up in landfills is disturbing. Check with your municipal recycling service. Also, search online to see if there are any services or business ventures accepting utensils, if not municipal. The challenge seems to be that most are made of more than one type of plastic (#1,#4, #5...).
Well plastic in heat never made sense to me. I always use metal.
Ban production of toxic chemicals
Well, I have made it to age 65 completely surrounded by numerous toxic chemicals of the years so how bad can they be?
Then again, my entire nervous system is completely ravaged by the effects of MS so, there is that.🤔
I have switched my pots and pans to stainless steel and cast iron, I am going to do the same for my plastic utensils as well.
Explains why I know so many people with cancer
Warning: Don't eat black plastic.
Knowing oil smoke points is also important. 😄👍
That should be obvious. Heat applied to plastic must let out some toxins. I have a few on those kitchen utensils that were given to me 15 years ago, and i never used them
Thank you. Used one for a couple months last summer. Got a bad feeling and stopped. Science is better than mere feeling in knowing.
Has me thinking about pretty much everything in my kitchen. Not everything is black plastic, but plenty of plastics and other suspect materials!
Wood, bamboo … better than plastic
😂 how did y’all not know this 😂. A child could tell you plastic is toxic 😂😂😂
Use wood spatulas instead.
Did they ever tell us measured levels released by the utensils?
Short on info. How about ceramic coated cookware? Is there any nontoxic plastic utencils that won't leach these bad chemicals?
staineless steel is the best choice
All plastic products are toxic... There is no "safe" plastic for food or drink
Now I have to throw all my sh*t out. Good thing I bought those silicone set from Costco, or are you going to tell me that's harmful too?
I'm gonna get rid of all that crap and Teflon pans
Why dont they do a leach test on some cooked food, and food storeed in containers, and find out how bad it poisons the food?
The doctor’s shoes has me shook.
I did not get what he meant by not using the dishwasher, is it only for utensils made out of plastic due to the high temperature that uses to clean them?
Yes

This is some of why society has trust issues. Some of the justified parts of why.
The smarty-pants people in manufacturing later go "whoops" for stuff that should have been found before having the public trust their products.
Just stick to wood and metal, and wash your dishes by hand. A little more cleanup work but a lot less risk. Sheesh!
