The whole iron prison of forcing someone to marry someone they don't love and don't want to be married to, especially when they're deeply in love with someone else and want to be married to them, because it's "expected", because it's "tradition" is barbaric and heartbreaking. Then, the situation was compounded by going on to have an ongoing affair with the beloved AFTER having given in to the command to marry the unloved spouse. Any woman with any spunk and pride at all would leave, which - I gather - she did, and then the Prince went on to marry wife number two, but, being abjured to "woo back wife number one" by a tyrannical (in actuality) ruler, unbelievably the Prince assents to follow what I imagine amounts to orders and sets out to win back unloved wife number one - which leads to wife number two basically saying "I'm out of here" and leaving. This is how matters seem to have played out.
There is absolutely nothing "romantic" in such a gruesome situation and all in the name of "it's expected", "it's tradition", pain is brought into the lives of all the parties involved. Yes, there might, probably definitely would, have been consequences in defying unfair orders, but there's one vital word that could have been employed at least twice, and that word is:"NO!"
Don't attempt to turn such a tawdry,,ugly situation into what amounts to a romantic fairytale just because the people in question have extreme wealth, power and position...that makes it even UGLIER.
