Hi! I was the loco driver from Debrecen to Valea Lui Mihai, on the 418 174 🚂 I hope you enjoyed this ride with us! 😊 The video is amazing! Taking this train to Brasov is absolutely on my bucket list.
No way man! Yesterday evening I've returned from Budapest - Valea lui Mihai - Miercurea Ciuc - Sighetu Marmatiei - Solotvyno - Mukachevo - Budapest trip (I've took Harghita and Latorca trains) and today I see, that you uploaded this! Unbelievable!
but this train is famous for its retro/vintage cars; so newer sleeping cars would not be appreciated for most ones; and how do you power the AC for the non-electrified segments ?
@@doc7austin Its unbelievable that you think there is no AC if there is no electric engine to haul the train. How old are you? Last year, Corona (except the one sleeping car) had full refurbished cars with AC along the whole route
Thanks for this perfect trip report! We have already booked the same sleep cabin to Brasov in the End of October.....i will guess it will be cooler then. Also my wife now knows what she expected 😊. We are looking forward the the 2. Part. Greetings from Hildesheim in Germany!
Another beautifully crafted video report Doc - I could almost feel the heat! Deep down, I suspect you weren't TOO upset having to spend two hours having a meal in the air-conditioned dining car..... looking forward to Part 2.
The sounds of train/tracks as you leave is so amazing. It hasn't been since the 1980s that I was able to have such sounds with open windows in Canada. Back when we have transcontinental trains, VIA tolerated we spend time in vestibules with the half door (window) opened on top. And our old commuter trains had permanently opened doors (no staff to close/open doors every few minutes betwene stops). Now, it is all air conditioned with automated doors and last I heard VIA no longer tolerates people standing in vestibules. On some of your videos, the wind ruins the sounds but on this video, you captured it so well.
it seems if hold my camera outside, but keep the mic inside the train, the sound is much better; yes, the corona is the way we have travelled 40 years ago
The Dining coach you seen on the Adria intercity is from hungary's private company called Máv Rail Tours and they use it because Máv Start has no other international dining coach so they borrow it.. its the same company but MRT has the Nostalgic coaches and trains/Fancy ones. The dining coach goes on stuff like MRT's Semmering Express
Really nice documentation!! I hope part II will contain the section Valea lui Mihai- Dej- Saratel- Deda too! I would really like to see loco change in Dej. 🎉
@@doc7austin yep, the day when the whole 120a line shat itself. The 11th to be exact. I could actually see the passenger who sat in front of me get on😂
Wow, I guess this is as close as it gets to the true Transsiberian in Europe. A true hidden gem! Btw, the Railjet at 8:18 may be a lot faster, look cooler and have airconditioning. But you're able to open the windows so you're still winning.
Usually depending on crew you can only order food 30 minutes to 1 hour after the train departed. On hungarian trains atleast. They prepare some things fresh and also review the stock and the carriage if everything is fine and in good condition. Lecsó with the pork cutlet for example isnt prepacked they make that onboard. But not all foods. Some come in prepacked pouches. I had a thorough talk with one of the crew when i was on a journey to Hamburg. But tbh hungarian dining cars are very nice compared to other countries and theyre reasonably priced.
According to vagonweb Mav has 6+9=15 airconditoned sleeping cars. Why can't they manage to put a modern sleeping car also on this train? 2 for Berlin 2 for Stuttgart 2 for Zürich 4 for Split 2 for Brasov makes 12 + 3 reserve...
@@doc7austin That's definitely something for oldschool-industrial fans 😃perhaps "Einstürzende Neubauten" will do a trip on this and recording a new album while on board.
Utaselatto just hiked up the prices last year for all of the items between 10 and 100%. Some dishes are still pretty affordable. Doc Austin picked up the most expensive though

Doc thank goodness Doc you did this so we don't have to. But a late Fall or Spring ride would be nice, and Brasov is a great city.
Beautiful movie. I love the Hungarian railway atmosphere
