In 1137 in the city of Tikrit on the West Bank of the Tigris between Mosul and Baghdad. Salahuddin was born to a Sunni Muslim Kurdish family. Around the time of his birth his father Najm al-Din Ayyub was banished from Tikrit and subsequently travelled to Mosul, then Syria entering the service of Imad al Din Zangi the founder of the Zengid Dynasty . Salahuddin grew up between Baalbek and Damascus. Fonf of religious studies as a youngster he learned the ways of statesmanship and military tactics under the mentorship of the Zengid emir, Nur al Din and the tutelage of his uncle Asad al Din Shirkuh. Who led expeditions into Egypt to prevent the fall of the Fatimids at the hands of the Crusaders.
