You can argue where Bill ranks among the all-time greats, but you can't argue where those UCLA teams rank among all-time dynasties. There has been nothing like them before or since.

So true!!!! Seven straight championships. Plus, if freshman were allowed to play back then, they would have won eight. Because Alcindor would have led them to a championship in 66!!!!!

Bill Walton played in the wrong era. If he had played today, he'd have flourished even more due to his playing style along with less back to back games and modern medicine + training.

Big Red may or may not be top ten College Great my list of all time great NCAA players # 1 Kareem,, know then as Lew Alcindor #2 BIG O Oscar Robertson # 3 Bill Russell # 4 BIG E Elvin Hayes # 5 Patrick Ewing # 6 Pistol Pete # 7 Big Red Bill Walton # 8 Llionel Simmons # 9 Danny Manning # 10 Hank Gathers # 11 Jerry West # 12 Elgin Baylor # 13 Derell Griffith # 14 Rick Barry # 15 Jerry Lucas

Ewing over Walton? C'mon, as great as Patrick was, he was very offensively challenged as a college player. Maravich had the numbers, but his teams were mediocre, and most of his scoring was against the below the rim, all-white SEC of the time. He didn't make those around him any better. Walton was the most important player of his era, while Pistol was a sideshow. But, to each his own.

@@carseye1219 Walton got two rings, but only big time center that I can remember him battling was Larry Kenon of Memphis, that he ate up in NCAA Tourney, EWING was in the Big East and was 4 times DPOY, he had battles with Houston Olajuwon and the centers in Big East, Ewing Avg 15 pts per game while Walton avg 20, Ewing was better defensively and only a 5 pt difference per gm, I still would pick Ewing as a better college and pro center. I like my top 15 top college players over any list of anybody that made one. I placed Pistol Pete there simply on his scoring, IF U DON'T LIKE MY TOP 15 MAKE YOUR OWN, U ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CRITIZED MINE

@@JomoDaMusicMan Hey, I was just offering up friendly differences. I did say, "to each his own". Don't take it as a personal attack. I respect other opinions. Walton couldn't control who he played against, but he got the better of everyone he played against in college. Ewing was definitely a better pro simply because Walton's injuries didn't permit him to stay on the floor enough. But I think Bill, in those rare moments of being injury free, was superior. I just agree with Wooden, who said Bill had the greatest all around skill set of any big man he had ever seen. Your points are all valid. It's hard to compare across eras ("could Babe Ruth even hit a single off of a prime Max Scherzer"? stuff"). I'm a huge Russell fan. Everywhere he went, championships followed. But there are people that say "Bill Russell couldn't hit a 15-foot jumper if his life depended on it" as if that's the yardstick. As an Ohio State grad, I think Jerry Lucas's accomplishments are too often ignored. The championship game in every year he played. In the two he lost, he was injured. Regardless, you defend your picks well. I just wish college hoops would again be like those past eras. The "one & done" era has destroyed it. If I look at All-American lists from the 1970s and 80s, I know all those names. If I look at one from, say, two years ago, I'd forgotten all of them. Your list is good. I don't think I could do better. Take care.

@@carseye1219 don't give me that b.s, I'm from the Natti and we beat Ohio St with Jerry two yrs in a row and he played & Big O had already graduated, Lucas was just was out played by 6'8" George Wilson and Paul Hogue, the problem with Lucas and the Buckeyes were they didn't have any soul, no brothers , and that made the difference, Tony Yates pushing the ball up floor and Big Paul Hogue dominating the boards, of course this was college, in the pro, Jerry Lucas was best white boy reb in history of the game. Back to college top 15, I forgot to add NC State David Thompson who should've been just behind Elvin Hayes and probably in front of Ewing or directly behind him and in front of Walton

@@JomoDaMusicMan I don't know for certain about 1961 but Lucas was badly injured in the '62 semi, getting undercut in the Wake Forest game. The team doctor told him he shouldn't play in the final. But he said it was going to be his last BB game ever, so he'd give it a shot (he didn't think he'd play in the NBA at the time). Every story on that game said that Lucas was "moving so poorly" he probably hurt the team by being on the floor. Do research if you still want to call it bs. They did have brothers on that team. Mel Nowell, who I got to know when working in OSU Athletic Admin, was the 3rd leading scorer that year, averaging 14. Joe Roberts was gone by '62, but had a great career at OSU and played in the NBA. He also coached in the NBA. But, to be fair, Fred Taylor seemed to have a quota system that eventually got him fired. Not saying Ohio State wins even if Lucas was 100%. The games were played, and the Bearcats won them both. Congratulations to them. I thought it strange that you didn't include David Thompson. What a player! Too bad more people didn't get to see him play after college because of not much coverage of ABA and then drugs cut his career far too short. I still marvel at his RUclips highlights.
