I was there. This is the world premiere of this piece. Now this piece becomes one of the most famous percussion notes, but no audience in there could expect it in that time. The performers were the all of 2015 BM class members of Eastman percussion, They were junior in this time. Actually, I'm dad of Sam Um who is one of the marimba players.
I'm sure you are, but you should be incredibly proud of your son. And you should be proud of yourself too; as the musician son of a musician, players like Sam don't come out of nowhere -- there's music in his blood.
Whats so interesting about this song is you notice how the parts are written almost a half measure apart from each other. Like the cajons and how they trade off at 1:13. Just like a shadow that is always behind you.
Throughout a lot of the piece, the vibraphone parts are the same rhythm except one sixteenth off. I found it very challenging when my percussion ensemble played this piece.
Ahh this type of music makes me tear up. Makes me miss percussion ensemble in high school and makes me wish I knew more people who want to make this type of music. Absolutely beautiful you guys, carry this passion throughout life. It's so incredible!
@@miaak.u6709 Good luck at your performance! 😁 I would highly recommend checking out Stewart Copeland’s music if you enjoy percussion and haven’t already!
when everyone comes in at 6:25 it gives me such indoor wgi vibes, definitely miss playing this piece hopefully we run it back on our next night of percussion show
i have watched to the duet version but this performance is the reason that ensemble versions are always better. LIKE OMG THAT WAS AWESOME YOU GUYS!! WOO!!
Joseph Burns I like the Pulse version, but it didn’t really capture the raw emotion and beauty this piece holds for me and that’s a shame. I think the drumset addition may have killed the whole thing but that’s just me
we played this at prospect highschool. the story was that Ivan was inspired by the darkness of Radiohead and Dave Mathews Band. That was almost 10 years ago. still love this piece.
I heard this song for the very first time today (04/27/2024) at the WSMA State site at UW-Platteville while waiting my son's percusion ensemble to perform. I was BLOWN AWAY, this song is a masterpiece. It is almost a Chill/Deep House song. And kudos to I believe Middleton High School in Wisconsin for your performance. I still have chills thinking about it. Not taking anything away from my son, he scored three 1s and a 2 (for his percussion ensemble but the bar was set way high as they followed Middleton) but this song and their performance was the hightlight of my day.
Played this piece four years ago today for a talent show. Legendary. My most favorite and nostalgic piece. This crew performed it amazingly. Can’t even begin to think of how many times I’ve listened and watched this video.
my music teacher showed me this and I loved I showed it to my family and they loved it I showed it to my friends and they loved it these people are amazing! they seriously inspire me. I love you guys!
I played this piece 5 or 6 years ago. It took me longer to find my old sheet music than I expected, but that's because I forgot just how much old music I had. I didn't know at the time, but this would be one of the last songs I played on a Marimba to date. I loved that Marimba 2 part. Dispite having the 2 sections where you are the only one playing, it never felt so pressured. The first section (m.55 in my music) was always so epic. It felt like the into to a boss theme or the start of an adventure. It was the part that all of the other members, and even some non-members, wanted to learn, just because it sounded so cool. The other part (m. 107) was such a stark contrast. It was so light and airy. I knew that if I was too tense, I would cut off the space of the end measure notes and start rushing. It kind of forced me to relax, take it slow, and open up. All things said, this is a great piece that holds so many memories for me.
blows my mind that this piece is now 10 years old. it was a pleasure having the opportunity to audition in front of you back in January, Ivan! here’s to the next 10 years of this piece!
wow. what an astounding performance. i love the way the “extra” instruments (vibes / Cajuns ) intermixes with the marimbas. i loved the regular duet and i think you did a fine job playing this with such musicality. i find it extremely innovative and creative of you to add in the vibes and other percussion. that is an important constituent in presenting musicianship, having your own way of performing. sure it’s great to not only play the solo but play it well but it’s an even better thing to do what you guys just did and add that little touch of your own. the vibes ring perfectly and the cajuns fit in excellently with the rest of the players. that what you call music my friends. fine job.
I’m in my junior year of HS, playing marimba 1 in this ensemble for district comp in a few weeks. I love this piece so much, it’s definitely my favorite ensemble piece!
Man, they play this piece so damn fast, just amazing. I have a high school group playing it cleanly about 75% of this speed and I’m content with that. I can’t see us going a whole lot faster when we perform it.
Bravo !!! Mais quelle beauté cette musique et cette interprétation !!!!! C'est un grand plaisir de découvrir cette vidéo !!!! Merci pour ce beau partage
Woah! this just .. this is.. its.. I don't know what to say.. it just blows me away! overwhelming maybe? mighty? powerful, impactful? wondrous? oh and its soothing to, and somewhat mysterious without being haunting, but rather its warm, radiant, blazing, like a solarflare!
I played this song when I was secondary 3, I was in charge of marimba 1. Although this song is hard, the process is still good and I enjoyed a lot✨Catching shadow is a masterpiece.

Hey i liked this peace very much, but i think the vib. was a little too dominent in the tutti playing. I loved it, but one question... Does this peace also has a brass band version(marimba+brassband) ?
MCriff1 I highly highly doubt it because most if not all percussion ensemble songs are written solely for percussion instruments because of their ability to play such fast notes and aren’t very translatable. This song is a percussion ensemble song
I am playing the Cajon part with the Hi-Hat, what is the pattern in which he is doing accents on the hi-hat? Playing on upbeats will take away from Marimba 1; so I am not sure where to play.
Matt McLellan hes just playing accents on 2 and 4 and then every 4 measures he adds "3..a..&." (the dots are just 16th note partials idk how to actually put it on here)
I'm impressed by the sound that dude's getting out of the cajón

Yusef omg that’s why it’s called catching shadows
yeah this piece is very syncopated
Throughout a lot of the piece, the vibraphone parts are the same rhythm except one sixteenth off. I found it very challenging when my percussion ensemble played this piece.
I've watched this like ten times already, not stopping anytime soon.
Have you stopped?
Still here.
What about now?
Have you stopped ?
What about now? 🙂
Anyone else just NOT ABLE TO GET ENOUGH OF THIS SONG?! It’s freaking amazing!!! I aspire to be able to play this with my other percussionist friends.
4 years later, I am playing this with my other percussionist friends.
Can confirm, I am one of those friends

Mallet percussionists are so underrated and this video is one of the many reasons why I think they’re amazing
Literally THE COOLEST ENSEMBLE EVER
Gods. All of them Gods. Ivan Trevino? God of all the Gods.
No, you're wrong
Blake Barger nah gene koshenski is a god
Can't believe I'm gonna be performing this at VMEA with my percussion ensemble in a few months. All I can say is, marimba goes hard.
i have watched to the duet version but this performance is the reason that ensemble versions are always better. LIKE OMG THAT WAS AWESOME YOU GUYS!! WOO!!
I like how they added the two vibes in the back singing it really set the tone
Kamil Gomez itd be cool to have synth pads playing with the vibes too
Go check out pulse percussion 2019 lot tune
Joseph Burns I like the Pulse version, but it didn’t really capture the raw emotion and beauty this piece holds for me and that’s a shame. I think the drumset addition may have killed the whole thing but that’s just me
Yes indeed this sextet is amazing!!! 🥶
@kamil_of_2020 yes this sex tet is impressive were playing it this year💯 🥶 🔥
The guy on the hi-hat is so happy
Heard this in a perc. concert, and i absolutely adore it.
Whoever’s on the cajón and hi hat part omg I can feel how much your enjoying it, but in all amazing guys this is my idk 400~ time watching this
we played this at prospect highschool. the story was that Ivan was inspired by the darkness of Radiohead and Dave Mathews Band. That was almost 10 years ago. still love this piece.
this and insomnia brings back so many memories, dude... amazing works.
I literally bought insomnia today. Me and my friend are going to learn it
It's hard to find good percussion ensembles like this with nice pitched percussion voices and harmonies.
I love how you can see them really feeling the song, You can feel it. Great job!
0:00 to 8:56 is my favorite part
Anthony Fritz u mean the only two times in music where theirs silence ? Wowwwww
Anthony Fritz ok buddy :)
Lol funny
Saaaammme
@@t.a.b6328 he said 0:00 TO 8:56 which means he liked the whole song

Woah... I am so showing this to my instructor for our ensemble to play.
And ? Did u play it ?
Lol nah I wish though. I distinctly remember him saying, "Yeah... no one's going to practice that hard."
Stunning performance!
We are playing this price for our marching show and I’ve watched this like 50 times
Max Balasubramaniam where can I see this marching show? That sounds amazing
That wouldnt work

Very good job on this beautiful piece!
Ooh, my friends are playing this in the spring!
Am I the only one looking at the cute marimba player in the middle that plays extremely well?
1:44 through 2:26 is my favorite part. hi hat action is so cool
Incredible job
This is so beautiful💕💕❤️
We tried playing this in my high school and we could barely make it half way
🤔
We did too. I think we had to skip a part in the middle
Freakin Awesome... I love this jam.
I recently performed it, but this band did way better...
Nice work:)
Incredible good job.
I love this Song.
Amazing piece!

Wait…is that a young Sam Um??????? I highly recommend everyone check out his performance of Libertango
Felicitaciones .. Es una obra muy bonita y la versión igualmente... Donde puedo encontrar la partitura gracias.
Does anyone know what mallets marimba 1 is using. I have a recital for my solo and I would like to use these mallets
Young Sam Um is so adorable!
We’re doing this as our top percussion ensemble this year what mallets should we use
Shut up Kevin
too beautiful

playing this in week, the part i cant figure out is (of course) not on camera when It is plyed.

Superb!
What a phenomenal piece, the mood/atmosphere created is mesmerizing!!!

What type of cymbals are being used as a stacker?
Trash stackers. You can also just use two random cymbals
awesome..
Is there a snare in there and who is playing it?
Super!!! Super!!! :))) Thanks
Awesome.
I am playing the Cajon part with the Hi-Hat, what is the pattern in which he is doing accents on the hi-hat? Playing on upbeats will take away from Marimba 1; so I am not sure where to play.
adam vu it's not written in. It's just straight sixteenth notes. I noticed I cannot to and strong beats, because it will contrast with marimba 1
Matt McLellan hes just playing accents on 2 and 4 and then every 4 measures he adds "3..a..&." (the dots are just 16th note partials idk how to actually put it on here)
Matt McLellan it also looks like he is occasionally diddling the last two 16ths of a measure
That's what I noticed and have been playing that. The accent pattern you mentioned makes sense and ill look into it. Thanks!
Hell yeah Ivan!!!
fuuuck i wanna find the music for this, especially the part the guy on the far right is playing at 1:44
I can’t find the music without purchasing it- I’m trying to piece it together by ear instead based on the notes I can see him hit.
