Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 710: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Orient_Airlines_Flight_710 Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 710, a Lockheed L-188 Electra, disintegrated in-flight and crashed near Cannelton, Indiana (10 miles east of Tell City, Indiana) on March 17, 1960. The flight carried 57 passengers and 6 crew members. There were no survivors. Crash and causes[edit] Flight 710 was a regularly scheduled flight departing Minneapolis-St. Paul to Miami with a stop at Chicago Midway Airport. Radio contact with the Indianapolis Control Center was made at approximately 3:00 pm local time. About 15 minutes later, witnesses reported seeing the airplane break into two pieces with the right wing falling as one piece and the remainder of the craft plunging to earth near Cannelton in southern Indiana.[1] At the time, investigators organized by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) worked on three major theories: That a bomb blew up the plane and its passengers and crew members as they passed over southern Indiana on a Chicago-to-Miami flight. That violent air turbulence could have destroyed the craft, the first Electra purchased by Northwest and in service only seven months. Such turbulence was reported over southern Indiana at about the time of the crash. That the plane disintegrated through metal fatigue which had recently caused other crashes of high-speed airliners. The crash was the third Electra disaster in a little more than a year and the third unexplained accident in four months. It came within days of the Washington hearings on the death of 34 people in a National Airlines plane crash near Bolivia, North Carolina (that disaster was later discovered to have been due to a bomb). "Obviously, this plane broke up in the air," CAB spokesman Edward Slattery said at the time. "It is too early to tell the cause of the tragedy, but we will investigate all possibilities, including a bomb." (Edwardsville Examiner, March 19, 1960) The New York Times reported that at 5:44 P.M., an hour and a half after news of the crash in the snow-covered Indiana-Kentucky border country, an anonymous caller told the Chicago police that a bomb had been placed aboard a plane at Midway Airport. The police searched the airport, but found nothing and said that they were convinced the call was a prank. The operator said she thought the caller was a young teenager. The craft's fuselage plunged into an Ohio River country farm at a speed of over 600 miles per hour and disintegrated. The Federal Bureau of Investigation sent agents to the scene to determine whether there was any violation of federal law. Such an investigation would include the possibility of sabotage. State Police Sgt. Joe O'Brien said that the plane was last heard from over Scotland, Indiana, about 70 miles (110 km) from the crash site. He said the pilot, Capt. Edgar LaParle, had reported rumble and the weather was very muggy and cloudy. So much wreckage rained over a wide area, as the plane came apart in the air, that it was first believed that two planes had collided. However, the Federal Aviation Agency and the State Police said that all the pieces they could find were from one plane - Northwest's Lockheed Electra Flight 710. A wing and two engines of the wrecked turboprop were found about five miles (8 km) from the place where the plane's fuselage hit. Almost nothing was left of the craft. Hours after the crash, a column of blue-gray smoke still rose from the crater, about 25 ft (7.6 m) deep and 40 ft (12 m) wide. NASA, Boeing and Lockheed engineers determined that the probable cause for the accident was in-flight separation of the right wing while cruising at 18,000 ft (5,500 m) due to flutter caused by unexplained reduced stiffness of the engine mounts. This was subsequently defined as "whirl mode."[2][3] Six months earlier, a Braniff International Airways L-188 Electra, Flight 542, disintegrated over Buffalo, Texas at 15,000 ft (4,600 m), killing all on board.[2] This second similar crash moved the Federal Aviation Administration to immediately issue a reduced cruise speed directive while investigators tried to determine the cause of the fatal crashes. Notable victims[edit] Among the victims were: Chiyoki Ikeda, 39, a CIA training commander
That paddle boat needs to be fully restored and put back on the river. A priceless family heirloom for everyone to enjoy. I imagine those who are still around and remember that boat will appreciate seeing it brought back to life!
Mike loved the old paddle wheeler. You’re not going to believe this but several years ago, I built one too. However the scope of my project was a bit smaller. The materials I used were: Half of a plastic football for the hull. A handful of pennies for ballast. Pop sickle sticks and hot melt glue for structure. A wooden nickel for the wheel hub. A coat hanger for the axle. Plastic spoons for the paddles. And for the engine.. a big rubber band. It worked.... sort of. I put a Lego man onboard as the Captain but he didn’t have a rudder. So, it moved in what you might call random directions. I enjoyed the visits to the memorial and three other projects too. Thanks for taking me along.
You display an excellent example of personal integrity by not bidding on the job where you are involved in the awarding association. Thank you for being such a great example. I just wish the state and national politicians would believe the same way! Thank you!
I love this type of vijeo. Very good look at what a "rain day" looks like owning a company like yours. Being the boss is 50% paperwork and 50% production.
This was a great video, I have even more respect for you then I did before which is saying something. You do not do paid work for an organization you help control. That is integrity. You will not discuss customers pricing. That is respect. You help with your community. That is giving. So now when I see you with your fun toys, your water park, your go kart track etc. I think, here is a guy that works hard and deserve the rewards. Anyways stay safe, keep the family safe.
My friend wow WoW wow I wow my friend you've so surprised me on this one I'm extremely Proud of you and these amazing awesome people y'all team up in this little association so that you are in and around beauty and great people that would make any and every county or city in the United States be amazing love what y'all do here I can't say this enough to you I'M EXTREMELY PROUD OF YOU thumbs up my friend
Mike, the accident report of the plane crash made for some interesting reading. Darn the impact made a heck of a crater. Thanks again for the history lesson.
Hi Mike thanks for bringing us along. Cool to see that side .👍 And really you being a history buff is awesome. I have learned so much just from you sharing the information . In school history wasn't my thing . But over the years finding people like yourself has shown me how important it is the have a record of these things before they are gone!!!! So thank you for care enough to share what you know. Have a fantastic week buddy 😀 . Stay safe 😷 👨👩👧👦 always looking forward to your next post 🇨🇦 Craig
You are 1st from all channels I am watching who showed his customers and potential job. Thank you. I do not care about figures you can work out with them. I am not watching to know how much you charge. But it was nice to see something which others do not show. Thx for video! P.S. I hope you will get all jobs you intent and wish to do)))
Great vid Micheal. Enjoy all the history lesson and the unique places you take us in your vids. PLUS informative vids of your dirt work and etc. Thank for every effort buddy.
It’s great to have customers like Chris, but you only have them because the way you conduct your business that they are willing to continue with you. 👍🏻 In the 40 plus years that my Dad ran his building business he had many customers for over 30 years and some pretty much from the beginning to the point when he retired he was dealing with the grandkids of his original customers. You keep doing what your doing and Macy and Gunner will be doing work for Chris in the future.
Mike, you sure do have a good bunch of guys to work around. It does my heart good to see what you are doing in your community. Thanks for the great videos!
Please try and get that old Mack Semi... exactly the era Evol Kenevil was endorsed by and paraded with Mack Trucks. It's a fantastic truck to use in your fleet of work trucks with a rebuild [fantastic project]. Great vids btw. NOICE! Mack... ooooh yaaaa!
Back a number of years ago I had a friend who had a pond made. In Wentzville, Mo. there was a lot of slate in the area so when the pond started filling it got about four foot level and would go no higher. The solution was pump the pond empty then haul compatible clay in and relined the banks to seal the rock layer. It worked our real good in the end but it was a real headache for several years.
This video says 2 years ago so add couple months to that and that's how long it took for the retention area with 4-in pipe to have priority lol well after a tile plow was built if I may add lol I can't really complain though this channel has helped me through a lot lately and for that I thank you
Thanks for a very interesting and informative insight of the area in which you live and work. It is really nice to see how you interact with your customers. My working life was also around groundwork's/ earth-moving and construction in the Fens of Cambridgeshire England , mostly at or below sea level having to contend with clay one minute and peat the next... please more of the same. Take care and one again thanks
Captain Kleeman wants to build a boat cabin in the woods. Dirt Perfect finds a boat cabin in the woods. Seems like there is an arrangement that could be made here!... But seriously,, great video. Nice seeing the back end work that goes into lining up all your jobs. I've worked on a bunch of ponds and fixed a handful. My thoughts were similar in digging a key way or what we would call a "core trench". On a pond with a sand vein or gravely leak we would dig a trench just like you described and then fill in short lifts with good clay while compacting all the way up. Seems logical to me so I hope it works out for you. I don't think the stump will be able to hold back much water! Hope you get that pond job I'd like to see that one!
Hey Mike... The 'wiggle' room and 'buffer' room you mention is normal as you already know and a perfectly valid cost to add to a bid. I do the same and I list it as "Contingency" on the price quote. Not sure if I heard you say what you actually list this as on your quote but I thought I'd throw this out there in case you liked this short, sweet way of including it. Good video too.
I worked for myself for 18 years doing small remodeling, painting and paper hanging, lawn work and worked for a remodeling company for almost 3 years. I did all the estimates like you do and it drove me nuts sometimes. I loved it though. I got hurt on the job and had to quit and find a new career.
This is exactly why your channel is my favorite Mike, I never know what to expect, but, I always know it 's gonna be good and worth watching! Thank you sir!! I told several of my buds at work about the modular home move yesterday, they'll subscribe! Very cool stuff my friend. If you're ever in NWGA look me up.
👍 Nice mix of business and casual. Also nice lesson about ethics in a couple of minutes that higher education seems to stretch out to multiple semesters.
7:15 hmmmmm. I believe that was Mr. Millennial (I believe that is the correct spelling). Seeing the cause of the problem with his pond and the end result was so sad. A land survey would've certainly saved him a lot of money in the beginning. It was the first few videos I watched on this channel. I was hooked and went back to the very first video on the channel and spent the last couple of months making my way to this point.
That old home made houseboat looks like a lot of them I used to see on the Mississippi River here in Iowa. I remember many of them and having to pump them out because they sat to long in the water and sank. Great seeing an old houseboat.
That plan came down 80 years ago, sorry to hear that, but in 59 I was born and I am only 60, lol. your a hard-working man, grate video bud, keep them comeing.
you can put a drainage pipe in with a valve and then put a dam up on that end of the pond and then clean out the ditch & put some riprap in there and it will look really nice and if you ever need to drain it you can just open the valve and drain it from the backside of the little man made dam
I saw a guy fix a leaking pond once using an old drill rig/pump mounted on an old fifties-era International R190 4wd. He drilled through the dam down to the rock layers where the voids were causing the leak. Then he pumped a slurry of Portland cement in there. You could see where it had oozed out through the rocks when he was done. Worked great. That old truck had the big gas motor too. He said it was a “4-40”. Not the Mopar - “4 mpg and 40mph top speed “. Heh!
Great video Mike you covered a lot of stuff and it was all very interesting. Sitting here in Maryland waiting for concrete it definitely helps pass the time! Thanks buddy 👍🏻
In our area Central Oregon) we have very porous soil and pond liners are common, they will custom make them for any pond and they work very well. Much less costly ant 100-150 loads of clay. I have personal experience wth them. Check into them for the leaking pond job.
Instead of benches, how about memorial bricks. A park here in CT has a massive brick paver walkway with the memorial brick pavers inlaid. The walkway is already there and replacing brick for brick takes up no additional space. Just a thought. Great video, Brother! Stay safe and healthy!
Interesting to see what projects might be coming up on your channel - really hope you get the pond job as that looks interesting and expensive..! Kleeman needs that paddle boat for his RUclips yacht project - even looks like it's already on a trailer for him to tow up there 😉 We're now in week 8 of lockdown in Spain (so guess a couple of weeks ahead of you) but luckily things are relaxing a bit and I finally have hay ready to bale and move tomorrow so finally get a bit of freedom! Great vid as always - stay safe 👍
Yo DP, I visited the plane site when we lived in T.C. The Electra suffered other crashes. I didn't know about the "harmonic problem". I actually rode in one with a navigator for American Airlines out of Ohare. Some crashed on takeoff. The navigator/radio had a seat on a slide. Navigator backed the pilot on throttles in takeoff. The catch on the seat failed, seat slid back and the nav pulled the engines back to stop. The Electra had a faster climb rate than some of the jets at that time, quite a plane.
There's a guy that paints on the rock with a memorial of a Lost soldier of the community he is from here in Iowa just a idea for the rock and names of other lost soldiers. Neat piece of history sitting there in the old paddle boat. Keep up the great videos . Look up freedom rock
I rebler my dad and grandpa saying that boat name was the Rock Island Queen i rember it setting up at rocky point and them down by walmart and then is disappeared on say. Glad its still around

Long way to say 'the wing vibrated itself off' - that's enough. What a thing! Can't begin to imagine that horror. 600 mph? mommy
Beware the Ides of March
Thanks Mike , For taking us along . Yes that paddle boat was super cool and also the old Mack .

Thanks Mike, enjoyed the time.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Your sure right on that pond job. There,'s no telling what you will encounter on that job
Yup
I am lovin' Chris the farmer, he is hilarious.
More of him to come
Cool ride along Mike, it's nice to have regular customers like Farmer Chris. Hope you get the road job it will be interesting!

Great video have a great day and stay safe 👍
This video says 2 years ago so add couple months to that and that's how long it took for the retention area with 4-in pipe to have priority lol well after a tile plow was built if I may add lol I can't really complain though this channel has helped me through a lot lately and for that I thank you

We use tarps that are made for ponds. We are an oil field area and they build evaporation ponds to get rid of water from the oil field.
Very informative video.👍🇬🇧
Thanks
That’s super cool, I wish it could be saved

Very nice video thank you

Wow kool yea I watch a lot of those plane caches on the flight channel they do a great job

👍 thanks
I worked for myself for 18 years doing small remodeling, painting and paper hanging, lawn work and worked for a remodeling company for almost 3 years. I did all the estimates like you do and it drove me nuts sometimes. I loved it though. I got hurt on the job and had to quit and find a new career.
Cool boat!
Awesome thanks and will do
Wife and I went to crash site last summer, scenic area and friendly people.
Yup
Awesome Video!!
Thanks
Good stuff.
Rained out up here in Indianapolis today and our Kokomo job site. But the past few days have been beautiful!
Yes same here
Very interesting stuff thanks Mike
Thanks
Neat going back in time, we all know now what happens to Matt's pond.
Interesting road trip.
Thanks
R model was my favorite Mack of all time
Damn good old trucks
On Matt's pond. It's probably that Stump. The roots from it created holes for the water to travel threw
Also what happened too your blue r model mack? Looked like a sweet truck
Good video Mike , Thank you ! And that video of how you bid jobs was a good 1 as well my friend , I hit the like button 😎
Thanks appreciate that
👍 Nice mix of business and casual. Also nice lesson about ethics in a couple of minutes that higher education seems to stretch out to multiple semesters.
Thanks
Without a doubt some of the best times on a job is the history and the people the job is for.
Yup
i would love to restore that old boat
Captain Kleeman needs the paddle wheeler
or just a paddle

Pond looks like a stump garden
That spot with the sping and the 4" pipe would be a nice hydro generator location for that farmer
That's green thinking even if all it powers is a work light and a fan it takes some pressure off the grid
That old home made houseboat looks like a lot of them I used to see on the Mississippi River here in Iowa. I remember many of them and having to pump them out because they sat to long in the water and sank. Great seeing an old houseboat.
Well put ..great viewing.
Thanks
Great vidja Mike !!

In our area Central Oregon) we have very porous soil and pond liners are common, they will custom make them for any pond and they work very well. Much less costly ant 100-150 loads of clay. I have personal experience wth them. Check into them for the leaking pond job.
Yes we have
Curt, do you deal with Bend Tarp and Liner in Prineville?
Instead of benches, how about memorial bricks. A park here in CT has a massive brick paver walkway with the memorial brick pavers inlaid. The walkway is already there and replacing brick for brick takes up no additional space. Just a thought. Great video, Brother! Stay safe and healthy!
Kinda what we are going to do
Interesting to see what projects might be coming up on your channel - really hope you get the pond job as that looks interesting and expensive..!
Thanks and got one of them for sure
Paddle boat brings a memory of Huck Fin I would love to remodel that boat
Yes and would love to se it back on the water myself
Yo DP, I visited the plane site when we lived in T.C. The Electra suffered other crashes. I didn't know about the "harmonic problem". I actually rode in one with a navigator for American Airlines out of Ohare. Some crashed on takeoff. The navigator/radio had a seat on a slide. Navigator backed the pilot on throttles in takeoff. The catch on the seat failed, seat slid back and the nav pulled the engines back to stop. The Electra had a faster climb rate than some of the jets at that time, quite a plane.
Interesting
There's a guy that paints on the rock with a memorial of a Lost soldier of the community he is from here in Iowa just a idea for the rock and names of other lost soldiers. Neat piece of history sitting there in the old paddle boat. Keep up the great videos . Look up freedom rock
Yes enjoyed the additional content. You didn’t ask if the boat was for sale.
Not for sure o want it now 😬
Cap needs it for the woods cabin
Clay on the bottom of the ditch. I would put some rip wrap on top of the clay layer to protect the clay
Can't go wrong with a name like Matt!
