To repeat something I wrote the other day: It's ironic that the 1 policy Trump has been the most consistent on even decades before he became a politician is believing that tariffs are always good for U.S. businesses. Then again, he failed/bankrupted multiple businesses before becoming a politician, so it's not too surprising he stands by enacting tariffs regardless of what economists say. Tariffs can work effectively if used sparingly/selectively, but when you put broad tariffs on all goods from a specific or even multiple countries it makes foreign made goods more expensive, as well as U.S. made goods that include foreign produced parts.
While it's true that Trump has been a longtime advocate of tariffs, the idea that tariffs are inherently bad oversimplifies the issue. Historically, tariffs have been used as a tool to protect domestic industries, encourage local manufacturing, and reduce dependency on foreign production-goals that align with the broader economic interests of the U.S. Trump’s tariff policies were largely aimed at countering unfair trade practices, particularly from China, which has engaged in intellectual property theft, forced technology transfers, and market manipulation. The notion that tariffs inevitably harm U.S. businesses ignores the fact that many American industries benefited, especially in sectors where domestic production became more competitive. Additionally, tariffs provided leverage in trade negotiations, leading to deals such as the USMCA, which replaced NAFTA with terms more favorable to American workers. While excessive tariffs can create economic inefficiencies, dismissing them outright ignores the complexities of global trade. A well-calibrated tariff strategy can serve as an essential policy tool when used to counteract unfair trade practices and strengthen domestic industries.
What hasn't been mentioned that even if Tariffs are used sparingly, as they should be, doesn't mean they benefit the customer. If a company could produce goods cheaper than a foreign company that's being tariffed, doesn't mean those goods will be significantly cheaper. The companies will still be price gouging as much as possible, as lomg as they stay slightly cheaper than the foreign good, so the customer will lose out anyway.
Ontario cancelled a Starlink contract. Let’s hope they follow that through. Canada doesn’t need a military because everyone loves it. And they have the backing of the entire Commonwealth and the EU and NATO. Those countries aren’t stupid enough to waste money on the military.

I remember when Aus paid Laos(pretty sure it was Laos)to take some detainees. Laos did a great deal. They would only take those who agreed to be moved there. They wouldn't be allowed to work so Aus had to cover all their expenses as well as money to get Laos to agree to the deal in the first place - maybe even some other concessions to get them to agree. A total of 3 people agreed to go there and requested to be returned to their home countries not long after. I can't recall the entire amount but it was in the millions. One of the most prominent cases was the family detained for years. The only people held at a detention center costing millions to run. When one of the kids became ill she was eventually moved to a hospital in Perth where many turned out to a vigil to demand the end to the family's detention. They were granted leave to stay but the kids had been held for years by then. The detention scheme along with other measures did lessen the number of people coming by boat and in doing do did save many lives as hundreds had died on unseaworthy overcrowded boats. Most illegal immigrants came and still do on planes. The Aus govt even declared some islands and areas to be not part of Aus as if you set foot on the territory you can claim asylum. An oil company let go it's Australian staff and hired foreign workers. Govt said you can't do that. Company said well we are no longer part of Australian territory so what are you going to do? The scheme did reduce the number of boats over time but it left a stain on Aus and pissed off people where the detention centers were based. Guantanamo is a bit different. Still not good.
@@suzannekirkwood6392 Maybe it was the Cambodia deal? But yes, our expenses on the border is absurd. If we just a bonfire of $100 notes up in the hope that the smoke deterred migrants it would probably be equally cost-effective, and both parties actively work to attract immigrants for cheap labour anyway. It's a pointless and cruel political circus the nation has completely given up on making any sense out of, and the worst and strangest part is most of the Western world is now following our example.

I think opium use in US is also down bc after the US withdrew from AFG, the Taliban cut poppy/opium cultivation by over 90% and are in the process of eradicating it (as they had done before the US invasion). Some US "peace" institute even chided the Taliban for cutting the drug cultivation saying this was a negative move.
