To be fair: she didn't say be nice to Trump. She just said, focus on the really damaging parts of him. His hair, his body, his teeth almost falling out of his mouth, isn't going to have an impact on the world, but his foreig policy and threats to north korea do. I'm by no means defending Trump here. But as a german, american politics seem very emotional and I think the binary system is by design less compassionate. If you're against something, people automatically assume you're for the opposite side, because it's the only side that's left. In a multi-party system, if you're against one thing/person, there are still so many categories left to put you in. So people have to actually engage with you and ask, what your point of view is, which makes for a much healthier public debate and allows for more nuance.

it is not tribalism....it is that trump has mastered the 24 hour news cycle...there is always a new controversy every day....twitter or otherwise....and when the opposition is constantly trying to keep up with everything then nothing ever gets really dealt with and that means nothing every really sticks and that leads his supporters to perceive persecution...which leads to digging in and not believing anything that anybody but trump says.
You use the term mastery likc it consists of a fact on the back of a cereal box.

I think it's a false dichotomy to contend that what you point out rules out tribalism being the mechanism which makes his supporters double down when he spouts inane lies. They did it from the moment he threw his hat in the ring. The most important rule for a tribe member is that any attack on _any_ member of the tribe (and especially the leader) is an attack on all tribe members.
Regardless of whether the attack has merit, it must be met with lethal retribution, because the tribal instinct predates the modern institutions which take over responsibility, under a social contract, for righting wrongs. Tribalism relies instead on an implacable honour code, and this seems almost as true in Dumfukistan (middle America) as in the likes of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
That's my 2c, anyway.

And there is absolutely tribalism at play here. Trump and his party were all too quick to call for the head of Al Franken, and yet with Moore, they played the "he hasn't been charged with anything, it's too soon to lay judgement blah blah blah" despite being accused of similar (and worse) behavior.
I will even go one step further than that and say that the call for "lock her up" has nothing to do with Benghazi, or Uranium One, or any other event that HIllary Clinton has been involved with. The Republicans wanted to lock her up because she was the new tribal leader of the Democrats now that Obama was stepping down. They had tried to destroy him as a tribal leader 8 years before with the Birther conspiracy.
The most flexible organ in the human body is the brain. There is not an belief, ideology, or policy that humanity has been able to create that is has not also been able to create a justification for.

I do like the extra RUclips clip at the end. Trevor Noah used to do that but stopped for some reason. It gives it just a little more warmth and personality to the viewing experience. Makes it feel a little more personal because it demonstrates just a little more awareness by Steven regarding who is watching, which I appreciate. Oh, and its funny :)
