  • As a child, broadcaster Katy Tur would often fly in her parents' helicopter while her mom and pilot dad helped report news from above Los Angeles. But she says life with her demanding father was often given to fits of rage. As she writes in her new memoir, "Rough Draft," Tur tells the story of her parents, and about a dramatic change that came as a shock to her. Correspondent Tracy Smith reports.

    05:50 I think the dadd inability to acknowledge the violence and to somehow justify it because "he was in the news business", gives me a little bit of insight as to why he's not in Katys life.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 года назад +6

      He did acknowledge the violence. Here's some more insight. I read about Zoey Tur's transition in March 2015 in an _Los Angeles Times_ article "For Zoey Tur, a new life as transgender woman takes flight".
      _“Did I want to be laughed at?” Tur said. “Known as a man in a dress? A clown? No, but I had no choice._ TMZ _’s Harvey Levin called me in 2013 and said, 'We’re going to do this story [on your transition]. Will you cooperate?’ ”_
      _Tur has been asked why she waited so long to take the gender leap. She says she wanted to wait until her two children were grown. Regardless, the transition has caused a rift in her family. Tur said her daughter, an NBC News correspondent, is not on speaking terms anymore. Relations with the ex-wife are “horrible.” Her son, a medical school student, is supportive._
      The 2015 article did not mention why Katy was no longer on speaking terms anymore with her father. Now through this interview with Katy, I know why.

      Check out the father's threatening behavior towards Ben Shapiro. Watch "When transgender debate gets heated" video. He's obviously an intimidating man, even when he's a "woman" in a group setting, who's easily angered and has no impulse control. He tells Shapiro "that he'll be going home in an ambulance" because he called her "sir".

    Her dad has freely expressed regret in public interviews for "past behavior," yet is incapable of making amends face to face. Not much to work with there. 🤷‍♂️ Miraculous that Katy turned out so well. Help is widely available, and she's reaped the benefits from braving the hard work of recovery. Regrettably it is the road less travelled, to borrow the book title.
    Damage to kids of ragers is insurmountable for many, and untreated trauma passes like poison from gen to gen. The current epidemic of adult tantrums is a telling tale. My own road was _extremely_ rocky. Katy knows very well that sharing her story could help some survivor somewhere. Brilliant, beautiful woman.

      How about U report on it and let the world know about it? What is wrong with U reporting what U see as an amateur journalist and using social media to tell the story? Why be dependent on the same media U whine about reporting on themselves and their stories to tell of their life? When U just gave us breaking news U could report on. #RealTalk😏😐🙄

      When it comes to public figures, either they tell their own stories on their own terms or someone else will tell their story for them and it most likely will not be on their terms.
      I read about Zoey Tur's transition in March 2015 in an _Los Angeles Times_ article.
      So it's not airing dirty laundry for these people. They want to set the record on their own terms.

    I was said to be Transgender (MTF) and am familiar with the fits of rage. I still don't know where they came from but I was horrible and frightening to my family. I came out in 2005 and had surgery in 2007, and though I am responsible for it all, I think a part of it was due to PTSD and the Psych drugs that Doctors put me on. My family have forgiven me save for the wife I was married to for 38 years. I feel shame for it all.
