    Thanks for the good camera work Marcy. Sometimes I think it's funny the way Zach warns us about how you have to watch a mule because he/she will kick you if you get too close or move around behind it and then he'll say, "Now Marcy, move in closer to get a better shot here." or something like that.😛😊🙄😬😁😅

They all need love, direction, understanding, and discipline. Not in any certain order. Thank you for subscribing and the kind words. I truly appreciate it. Take care and do come again, anytime! I really really enjoy your videos! My Grandparents farmed with mules when they were alive and had a small farm in Northern Alabama. I was born in the city and lived in Chicago. We would visit our Grandparents when we were on summer vacation for 2 weeks a year. I lived all year to go and see my Grandparents and be around the mules, chickens, hogs, dogs and cats. Watching you work with your Mules reminds me so much of my Grandfather working with his mules. I was scared of the mules because of their size, but my Grandfather would get them so I could pet them and maybe feed them. I don't mind if you show the same thing my friend, as the memories come rushing back to me when I see you working with them. God bless you and your family always my friend and be safe! Keep the videos coming! I really enjoyed today's video so much! God bless you!

    Mr Odom, this is a great video !! I really enjoyed seeing how you do the repetitive moves to get May and June to lift their hooves for you. I now know what you do to calm them. Wow, my ole grandma had a way with her mules just like you did doing that, stroking their withers. I never knew. She wouldn’t let me get near them out of fear I could get hurt.
    Mr Odom who taught you how to handle your mules? Was it Mr Somers? Thank you for these videos, I know it’s a lot of work, also your video operator Mrs Odom does an outstanding job. Thank y’all.

      Thank you sir, I appreciate the kind words. So, my Pa was an old mule man from way back. I learned a lot from him. I have a good friend, Mr Ronnie Tucker, that I learned most of what I know from. And then there’s Mr Summers..he’s helped a lot. And another old mule skinner I knew, Mr Bob Cantrell, also helped me a lot. So I sum it up to this..I’ve got my ideas from a lot of different people at different times. They’ve all helped me a whole lot. And there are others that have helped me also. But those guys are the main ones. I’ve also learned some of it just by trial and error. And I’ve still got a lot yet to learn I feel like. But I am thankful for these fellas that’s made an impression in my life and my stock. I am thankful. Thanks again for the kind words. I just learned that young mule foals, of both sexes, are referred to as "mule colts", until maturity! Is this correct? I've always liked mules. I think your training methods are humane. You're a knowledgeable and kind man! Very informative, thanks for sharing! Just found your channel today.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  5 месяцев назад

      For our views sake and yours, It depends on where you’re located as to what they’re called…in our parts…they are “mare” mules and “horse” mules. When they’re under two years old, they’re colts. Both sexes. They’re either horse mule colts or mare mule colts. But either way they’re colts. Some parts of the country call them John’s and Mollies…but in the south, they’re horse mules and mare mules. Fillies are for horse people. It’s different in the mule world. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. And the kind words. Take care and do come again…

    I know you've heard this. I wonder if she named June because she was foaled in June ? Old timers used to say June colts are crazy but I agree with you. That foal spends the first few months with it's mama and picks up Mama's traits. Was that Begian mare a bay ?

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  7 месяцев назад +2

      She was actually born May 31st..but my ideas were to name them May and June because of how they were born. May was born May 5th and June was born May 31st. So June it was lol. I’ve had other June colts before and they were fine. Stupid makes stupid…crazy makes crazy every time lol. If I had known the mare was like that when she was younger, I wouldn’t have bred her at all. She was a great work mare once she had some age. Idk! But we will see how June comes along…her momma was a sorrel believe it or not and her dad was a black jack with white points. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it. Take care and do come again please sir.

    Another interesting and educational, this is the first time I hear you about the animals kicking, do you think they kick with their full power or just enough to let you know back off. I have been kicked by steers but lucky enough I knew what to watch for their crazy eye sizing you up and jumped out of the way but it still hurts, this happens especially when stalling them up, what is your opinion on this, thank you for sharing

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, sir, if you have been around stock very long… Then you know what to look for with an animal that is about to kick! It is no different with mules. They will give you a subtle warning. It is best to heed to it. I do not think she is intentionally mean she is just scared and nervous. That sometimes is worse than being mean. Time will tell… Thank you for the kind words and also for watching!

    You have some well mannered mules! Please explain what is the difference between mule and a donkey?😊

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Ok, so mules are the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. Mules are sterile and cannot reproduce because donkeys have 64 chromosomes and horses have 62. When the mule colt is born, it has 63 chromosomes which is an odd number and cannot reproduce. When you cross a male donkey and female horse…you get the head shape and skeletal structure from the donkey and the size/muscling of the horse. The best of both worlds. Mules are stronger pound for pound than a horse, and heartier. They’ve got a keen sense of self preservation. They get that from the donkey also. When channeled properly, the mule makes a far superior work animal. They generally love people and are naturally curious of humans. The bond they form with their person is more like a dog vs a horse. Some horses bond well and some don’t. Donkeys and mules are just different. They’re not for everyone….but the ones that can get along with them, generally love them! I like both horses and mules alike. For different reasons. But when it comes to day in and out work..I prefer a mule every time. Mules are thinkers! And they take their time doing different tasks. They work slower usually, and are more methodical. They like routine and pick up on the little stuff better imho. Anyway, thank you for the question and I hope this enlightens ya a little about mules anyway. Thanks for asking! And thanks for watching…take care and do come again, please! Anytime..

    • @zachodom7486

      Just because they cannot reproduce doesn’t mean you will not get either male or female. They’re just born sterile. A donkey has 64 chromosomes and a horse has 62. When you breed them, the mule will have 63. Being an odd number, they cannot reproduce. But you will still get male and females of mules. They have all the parts to breed with, but they’re just not fertile if that makes sense. Hope this helps. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again:
