  • Diversity and Internationalization in German Academia: Connecting the dots?" - The fourth annual METIS Lecture, delivered by Kathrin S. Zippel (Einstein Professor of Sociology with a focus on Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin) on 9 November 2023.
In 2007, The German Research Association (DFG) introduced the German Excellence Initiative with the goal of transforming German research institutions and universities into a more excellent, innovative, and internationally visible and competitive academic system. For the past decades, German universities and research institutions have been more successful in recruiting international talent both at the student and researcher levels. However, does a more internationally open academia create greater equity, and if it does, for whom? In fact, internationalization might recreate inequities rather than ameliorate them. Zippel discusses what “excellence,” “diversity,” and “internationalization” mean in the particular German context and what this means for evaluation processes and selection criteria. She draws on current research and lessons learned, including experiences in the United States, to explore the relationship between internationalization and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia, and concludes with ideas for creating a more inclusive notion of excellence.
