    It sounds like my grandson is going to take the same route as you and is hopefully starting Fylde College this year if the world survives the apocalypse. It did his great uncle, my brother, no harm as he started as an apprentice for Leyland Motors, now has an Engineering PhD and is a uni lecturer. I don't believe academia, A levels, degrees etc are necessarily a sign of intelligence as much as on the job problem solving is.
    This is the first Snap-On review I’ve seen from the UK, a well laid out kit. Do the big vans travel round like they do in America? I might start on my shopping list now to give to my grandson.

    • @Darrall59
      @Darrall59  4 года назад +2

      Hi Mark,
      I'm sure he'll do great, aslong as your passionate enough about cars and people he'll fly through his initial training and job offers! So for tools we have smaller vans/small lorries not the huge lorries like in the US they are enough to fit a decent amount of kit in though!
      I think you should start looking for bits for him, I'd suggest like garage sales ect, Cheaper kit first then replace it with more expensive and take the older kit home. Having expensive kit sure is great but it's way better to have a large variation in tools to make your more productive.
      Thanks for watching!

      Sorry about butting in on your conversation, but I have some insight on your question. Yes, I am from American. Yes I am an automotive technician & made my 1sr Snap-on tool perches way back in 1985. Yes i have a Snap-on toolbox & tools & yes I have traveled to 21 other countries. In the tool world there are really 3 major tool companies with tool truck (Snap-on tools, Mac tools, & Matco tools). There are a few other tool companies in some places in America with tool trucks 2 of the other companies that I've had are S & K tools & Cornwell tools. I've heard that there are more but thats all that I've personal seen. I've bought Snap-on tools off the Snap-on tool truck in Mannheim, Germany & Snap-on tool (store) in Kawait City, Kawait. Snap-on tools are sold in most countries around the world. With all that being said I agree that as nice as Snap-on tools are, as a entery level technician, total quantity of tools is more important that quality of the tools to a certain point but junk tools that break the 1st time you try & use them are just a total waist of money. Craftsman tools, Gearwrench tools, S & K tools, Proto tools, ect... are all a better choice for a beginner. I learned that the hard way (expensive way)! LOL To give you an example, when a Snap-on 15mm combination wrench (spanner wrench) will cost you around $60-$70 USD as opposed to $10 USD for say a Craftsmen 15mm combination wrench (spanner). Well it's a no brainer to buy the Craftsman tools when i can buy 6 - 7 times as many Craftsman tools as opposed to Snap-on tools. Just so you know that i do know what im talking about and not just blowing smoke up your behind, you can see my toolbox inventory here on RUclips @ Critter's Snap-on. Your grandson is very lucky to have a grandfather like you! I bought every tool I own. Sorry to but in on your conversation Mark but as a person that has been buying Snap-on tools for almost 40yrs I felt compelled to weigh in & put my 2 cents in.

    I've been totally on the fence starting as an apprentice next year as I'm set to qualify as level 3 next year or as an entry level tech. The pros of being a tech is better money for more tools, I imagine I'd learn the same but that apprentice wage is pittance and I'd be really struggling on it when I leave my part time job. What would you recommend I do as my "progression coach" at college is about as helpful as he sounds. Unis not really my cup of tea, I need practical experience and cashflow now rather than in another 3 years. They're pushing race team degrees but ive seen enough premier inns and race tracks, not for me. cheers

    • @Darrall59
      @Darrall59  3 года назад

      Apprenticeship is the way to go, your only worth as much as the skill you have. Keep your head down learn from the people around you. Race qualifications aren't worth much these days to get into f1 ect its requires engineering degrees ect.
      If your level 3 approach your local main dealers and ask for experience in exchange for a days a week free labour!

      I had the 1/2 impact 3/8 impact 3/8 ratchet the 1/4 hex driver and the 14.4v drill
      After a lot of warranty issues and the batteries being stupid expensive to replace
      I bought everything in Milwaukee haven’t had an issue and was able to buy 3 of the 12v items for just under what the cost of 1 14.4v Snapon item would cost
      I prefer the Milwaukee ratchet over the snap on due to the size an the trigger
      Only complaint is the 12v 3/8 impact is no where near as powerful as the snap on 14.4v that thing could take of a tourqued wheel nut without sweating on it

    That tool box probably cost more than a mortgage on a house 😀 really nice though can’t beat snap on but unfortunately these days your paying for the brand not the tool quality

    Never understood why mechanics buy their own kit, like i get you respect the tools more and and buy what you like but if you work at a main dealer service centre surely they should give you tools. Like if i went to work and a giy in a van offered me a better seat for 49.99 a mnth and a better stereo 32.99 and whatever id laugh at them, in there to earn money not spend it.
