Thanks for this. I was on the fence about which pen would be my next step up from my preppy and set on Lamy, but now I have a push and great information about inks and fill options. I did not know about Lamy cartridges being proprietary!
I've been using Noodler's 'Heart of Darkness' black--in part because it's not a pigment so it can't clog the pen if it dries out. When you first put it on paper it is water soluble, but after it dries for about 20 minutes, it permeates the paper fibers and will no longer wash out.
I have started with Lamy Al Stars! I have 5 and a Lamy Studio as a present. I absolutely love them. I haven’t tried the line and wash with the non waterproof ink yet. You make those look so easy! Really like the videos!
I like the tip about the syringe, thank you. I have had occasional issues with the Platinum carbon bleeding a bit when WC is applied over it. It seems to be a function of the paper, I think. I dunno, maybe I just didn't let it sit for long enough before trying to apply a wash. However, in general, I love the ink. This was an interesting intro to the Lamy pens, I may have to get one and try it. Thank you for the insight.
I think that maybe it wasn't quite dry. I've had zero issues with bleed. I always give my drawing a quick blast with a Hairdryer before painting. Especially if there are think lines. These seem to take an age to dry without some hairdrying. 👍
Very interesting video, I have used fountain pens for some years as I dabble with calligraphy. But needed to get the left handed nibs, so it is very good that Lamy cater for left handed people.
@@dougjacksonart I will! For starters I got the fine nib. And a converter. I am a purple fan. This pen comes with purple ink which is halarious but i have the recommended permanent black to switch it up. Ordered the converter also. Plus my friend who is INTO blue in all ways i ordered the blue for her birthday!
I love my Lamy! Reporting back…first off the “purple” ink my purple pen came with was a weird blue. No biggie..but it didnt flow great..i tossed it and immediately got out the converter i ordered and filled it with Carbon black permanent. No looking back. It flows so smoothly. I have refilled it once and this pen doesnt miss a beat. I really like it.
Great video, nicely explained. I had this one question. I have 2 choices in lamy, one is the demonstrator pen and the other is the opaque pen. I love the demonstrator, but it feels like the plastic is unsturdy and will crack or break in long term. Which one should i go for as a beginner.
I really can't remeber but it was from etsy.. like this. www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1809551101/leather-pencil-cases-roll-up-cowhide-pen?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=leather+pen+roll&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&pro=1&frs=1&content_source=e4c2077392641ec2d6caf9729a65032b89bf21ff%253A1809551101&organic_search_click=1
Thanks for a great video Doug. I have been considering buying a Lamy Safari as a first drawing fountain pen and your explanation has helped no end. As a left hander I have never found it easy to get anything for my sinister self; not even a pair of scissors, never mind a pen. A couple of questions: do I choose my choice of nib with my order and where would I purchase the syringe you acquired?
Glad it was helpful! I know in the UK you can specify the nib on purchase and even the Sinister varient. Cult Pens is the store I've used. The syringe was bought in ebay I think. I got three for a fiver.
Very informative video. Thanks. Thanks for the tip about the syringe. Great idea. I am new to fountain pens. I did some research and decided on the Safari. So in April, I went to the local art store which had a nice display of Lamy's. While I was deciding on the color, a white/silver Lamy AL-Star called to me. That's what I took home. (Essentially, it's the same pen as the Safari with an aluminum body.) Now maybe someone can enlighten me about this hobby: How did I wind up with five Lamys already? 😁 I think they all were special editions at one time. BTW, on some web sites, the "B" nib is referred to as "Broad."
Glad it was helpful! Yes I think broad is more accurate than bold but it got stuck in my think head....Sounds like you have the same affliction as me with your fountain pens. 😂👍
1:48 "The pen will post very well…" I've just bought what I believe to be a LAMY Safari, and the cap does not seem to fit and stay snuggly on the barrel at all. All there LAMY pens where the cap is not designed to slide onto on the barrel?
I generally just use what's to hand and filled at the time. I've definitely been using the yellow one a lot more for re ent vids just because its so bright and cheerful 😊
8:25 where does one buy a syringe with a needle? It seems like the sort of thing an average pharmacy would not have the license to sell to the general public.
GREAT CONTENT TO HELP SOMEONE NEW GET GOING,,,
Lovely comment. Thanks
Thanks for the tip about refilling cardriges with a syringe 🙌
Glad you found that useful.
I have 2 safaris and love them. Both filled with platinum carbon ink. They write and sketch perfectly 👍.
Yep. That's been my experience. My kids love them too.
A beautiful collection of Safaris you got there!
Thank you kindly
Thank you so much - just the video I needed. All the best from Copenhagen :)
You're very welcome! I love Copenhagen ❤

Most welcome Peter. 😁

Yes I've heard it's a good ink. Thanks for the info
Since getting my 2 lamy pens i use them all the time not just for drawing but making lists and anything else. Great video, helpful
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting 🙂
One of the most sound, honest and very organic reviews I have had the pleasure of watching cheers bud that’s a sub and like from myself
Thanks for the sub and you're super kind comment. 😊
So glad I came across this video as I was wondering what fountain pen to get for a first one
Good timing!!

I just ordered my first one!
Excellent. Let me know what you think.

Using the syringe to refill seems the most sensible. (It's the technique that I also use)
Very wise Jimmy 👌 👏

Just choose whatever colour you prefer. They will all work the same 👍😁👍
Can you give the link to the roll pen case at the end?

My request as well.
Here’s how the world is changing. My son is an animator in Hollywood. Almost all of his drawings are done with a pen on a large monitor.
I know it's a whole new way to create art!!!
Hey can we put another colour of ink in the converter after finishing the previous colour
Yes you can. You might want to rinse it with some clean water first. You can even reuse disposal ink cartridges too.
i learned about the syringe trick from watching, thanks
Glad to help

M or F nib which one to choose
Both ditterent and both good. To start with I'd go with M
Any tips for people who likes changing ink color efficiently but oftentimes only carry 1 pen?
Apart from using cartridges it easy just to carry a couple of different pens with different inks. That's what I do. 😁
you need to clean the ink in the feeder or it will be mixed with the new colour
Anothere way to see the color of ink in your pen is to write with it.
True 👍

That's weird. All mine work fine!
Use an infant's ear bulb to flush it out. A tip from Goulet Pens.
ohh great tip!
why do you not use one for drawing yourself in most videos?
I generally just use what's to hand and filled at the time. I've definitely been using the yellow one a lot more for re ent vids just because its so bright and cheerful 😊
A ja szkicuję piórem platinum preppy 03 i jest ok. Naprawdę, a reke mam dość nerwowa
Just go for it! 😁

I buy them off ebay there in the uk
