Oh no they actually ate Dom after the ad
He is DOMlicious so I really can't blame them. I hate myself for saying that.
I am sure that they are not the first to have Dom in their mouths
@@alexneffBloody hell
@@jetsflyingoffatrain4338to be fair he looks really tasty 😏🥵😩
@@mitchmcmahon4079 Well, just out of spite I'm going to love you for the both of us >:(
For people who are watching this later, they play the first round wrong and forget to reduce the movement for how many treasures they have but play correctly after that
Professional board-game players
but they still got it wrong. If you have ANY O2 left at the start of your turn, you get to roll. Laurie died with 1 O2 left, even if he had 3 treasures.
@@binnieb173 yeah they mentioned it once in the video, they edited txt the first time it happened, definitely changed the outcome of the game, I think there was a time that sully could have made it and possibly won the first game
Thank god... I was having an aneurism watching the first round.
@@GlenOneN You kept watching?
I stopped at the start of 2nd round when he looked at the treasure value that he picked up.
"It's called Deep sea DIEving not Deep sea surviving!" - Laurie
And he truly lived up to those words.
Laurie failing his sanity roll at the bottom of the ocean was not the twist I was expecting from a game lacking that mechanic
Not ending the Surfshark skit with a card saying 'Fin' will always be a missed opportunity
At the bottom of the ocean waits the most dangerous creature - the selfish...
I've played this - you get that wonderful feeling of, "Well, I'm dead - but at least I can drown everyone else as well!"
Listening to this podcast style I didn't immediately grasp that the oxygen supply was SHARED until they all got on Blair's back about killing them all. Completely changed the game!
It's alright to misunderstand rules, as long as it's still fun and everyone understands it the same way. Even if you switch over to the correct rule during the game and everyone is okay with it.
In the end it's all about fun. In fact, that's why house rules exist because it makes the game fun.
I've played this game a ton and I've found the player interactions is at least half the fun. if nobody takes treasures at the start you can all get to the bottom where the good stuff is, but the moment someone takes any treasure the clock is ticking and suddenly everyone needs to fend for themselves. Where different groups find that line of patience vs greed is highly varied and the negotiations themselves where people try to organize can be extensive. This is a good teaching game for explaining the Prisoners Dilemmas, Game theory in general, and even the tragedy of the commons.
Does it scale well or is 4 optimal?
fun fact - tragedy of the commons is not real! it was just made up and is not observed IRL - commons fall pray to external pressure/violence, like in enclosure process.
@@rickthompson3843the more players, the faster the submarine losses air, so ideally fewer players the better. It’s a simple, but very punishing luck pushing game!
The best part about this game is how easy it is to over extend early and screw yourself over in subsequent rounds. You think “Oh there’s plenty of oxygen what’s one more round” but the speed penalty is brutal and the oxygen never lasts as long as you expect.
Jon is forgetting Citadels where he was far more unlucky
Na, pretty sure Jon just decided he wasn't playing Citadels, and just showed up as emotional support
I'm sure that's a repressed memory so that he doesn't spend every future game trying to kill everyone else in retaliation for Citadels even in games with no killing other players mechanic.
I love how Sully was the only one who seemed to understand the game (though still managed to lose twice to GreedyGutsBlair).
I don't know if that ad was trying to convince us to buy into Surf Shark or convince us its some sort of cthulian shark-horror that is slowly taking over the planet? Either way, I'm entertained?
Got confused, joined a cult.
Instructions unclear. Became a Shark-Human hybrid.
Both is good
Teri should have started playing the Sonic drowning music to ramp up the tension
Mario 64 hasn't the most stressful dying music.
Curiosity killed a cat but greed killed a shepherd (or rather her friends). I'm pretty sure that's how the full saying goes.
Also I would like to say for the record, that Blair in fact did not learn. She simply did a body swap with Laurie during the transition, so she can blame him for her crimes - a classic Blair move.
This shark bit will never get old.
Until the Surfshark contract ends
Here is a fun thing to do for those who know how: Interepreting all their hand gestures as divers sing language...
For example John seems to have constant problem with his diving mask. And Blair encounters several pufferfish...
@@nightclyve2857 please go on, i'm ignorant and this is funny
@mattiamazzanti8418 Well,
at 14:40 Laurie performs a textbook pressure compensation
at 21:30 Sully gives warning of a lionfish (known to experts the prick of the seas)
at 23:30 Laurie indicates that he has about 30 bars left in his tank, Sully respons with 40. (They are both below the reserve threshhold of 50 bar, imminent return is mandatory.
at 34:00 Sully has his head stuck in a giant clam...
at 35:26 one of several times Johns mask is running full...
at 41:35 John, apperently has an octopus in his face...
It seems if you are gonna die round one and fall behind in score, continue to grab all the treasures you can to have shorter maps in 2 and 3.
That's a deceptively simply game design, really quite beautiful in its simplicity. I find that the games I enjoy most take a really simple premise like this and don't over-complicate it.
They left it to the players to over-complicate the situation.
Gah! I was Dom-baited
Same
Jon and Laurie's families thinking "that diving business sure worked out great for our ancestors, we should definetly carry it on" 😂
Everyone should just dive deep and pick treasures up on the way back rather that depleting oxygen on the way down. You could all get a lot more points! :) Still a very fun play through!
Any game where Jon Gracey slowly loses his mind is a guaranteed delight.
When you start grabbing two is when you really slow down and the oxygen runs out fast.
I feel like this game gets more fun the more complex the board state becomes, and would benefit from being played for 5 rounds instead of 3.
A good home brew rule change! Some games benefit from an extra round as it just gets going as it finishes.
Honestly that was my thought about the game as well
Players who don’t all die in round one and two would have grabbed all of the treasure by then
Bought this for $6.XX during the pandemic times. Haven't met a group that doesn't warm up to the game and reveal their colors while going after treasure, lol
I would question that, in case of brain trauma, it is really the lack of oxygen that kills you - and not that your brain was smashed into a mush. The cell death of the brain should happen before it is deprived of oxygen.
Also, in cases where the the body temperature has dropped siginificantly, it has been possible to revive someone even though their heartrate has dropped to a point that would normally kill (due to lack of oxygen) because the low temperature prevented the damage low oxygen would normally entail. So it is arguable that it is always brain damage (usually caused by lack of oxygen) which is the cause of all death.
@@LeoMRogers This is exactly why, to be declared dead, one has to be warmed up to normal working core temperature first. Cold and dead might not be dead. Warm and dead definitely is.
That's probably dependent on how extensive the brain trauma is, and which areas of the brain it affects. Interesting thing to wonder about, for sure.
I was just about to say how that take is clearly coming from someone who's never thought much about the terror of seeing someone set off a land mine.
I also wonder if an oxygen air-bubble aneurysm would be a counterexample? Too much oxygen at once, not diffused in blood, etc.
Even with some rules not played right, this still shows how much fun a simple game like this can be. One of my favorites to teach!
Its crazy that Blair killed them pretty much every round and got punished by the dice so rarely lol
The surfsharks have finally been slain. The nightmare is over. The curse is gone. We are safe now.
Don't laugh to soon...
8:48 trouble in paradise already for the Bunkin' Bronuts
This was absolutely a riot! One of my favorite NRB... neh favorite videos overall! I couldn't stop laughing. Hilarious hilarious 😂 great job gang!!!
I thought you're not supposed to look at your treasure value. Glad you corrected the first mistake.
Loved the Lovecraft reference! But I’ll take his “indescribable horrors” any day rather than tedious, poorly done descriptions!
I love this game and because of the size of the box it's easy to take a long with you. The real question is: How much (in)sanity will fit in this little box?
I see your bedknobs and broomsticks references.
49:17 Sullivan and the King's Dilemma
In a game with no hidden traitor Laurie becomes a Deep One Hybrid and betrays everyone.
This is a fun game. You all were hilarious. Could watch a few more episodes of this. House Rules on it would be fun too, add some sharks or something. Great content 🔥
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Blair/Sully dynamic - more please!
I love these surfshark ads
came here for the bushy beard of Laurie, stayed for the boardgame
A _great_ big bushy beard!
It might be good for SEO if you guys add a chapter titled "How to Play" right at the beginning, on RUclips before the game starts, and potentially as a hashtag in the descriptions.
Did they really eat shark-Dom? :(
Oh god....he is indeed missing from the episode
“Live a little, die a lot!!”
"I'm just playing smart!" - Blair, after having lost both the first round and only BARELY survived the second round by doing the same strategy. (Also then going on to lose the round)
Blair has always been a 'cut off your nose to spite your face' kind of player... And by face I mean Laurie
30:40 John thought we didn't see him reroll his 1 😂
Dice have to land in the tray!
Yep, consistently throughout NRB history they've played by the rule "it doesn't count unless it lands in the tray".
Until blaire rolls her 6 at the start of this game lol @@virgilalighieri7192
@@virgilalighieri7192 Except for Blair and John who conveniently both kept out of the tray 3s. Funny how that works!
Dang it! Another game I may have to buy. Quick, small and understandable; I think I csn get my family to play it.
Excellent show, NRB.
The source of all death is life.
ITS THE BEST TIME OF THE WEEK!!! ITS BOARD GAME CLUB!!!
I been thinking about this, and it seems like if the players take two treasure before turning back they're guaranteed to die on the way back. The oxygen gauge on the submarine is deceptive because the available oxygen per player is only 6. Once you start taking treasure you have roughly 6-[your treasure] rounds to get back to the submarine. For example, going down, you pick up 1 treasure, your second turn you have 5 player oxygen remaining, and you pick up a second item, on your third turn you have 3 player oxygen remaining and on your fifth is the last chance you have to get to the submarine. Couple this with the fact that on average you're moving half the speed returning, expecting to take twice as many turns to get back to the sub, you're gonna be short by one. It's a prisoner's dilemma.
Sometimes its good to pick up a second treasure if you're close to the ship, just to take some more oxygen away for the others.
Mechanically I think the "best" tactic is to take as many treasures as possible from the 1s and 2s on the first round and not even bother trying to survive, then pick up one treasure (on your 2nd turn, 3rd if you roll low) and pick up a second (if the timer is looking okay) on the way back on rounds 2 and 3.
@@DarrenFoster the good thing is that every tactic can be countered. If someone has earned some treasures in the first round they could try drowning everyone who goes too deep on the second and third round.
i have just realised that when they say 'Tower of Destiny' it sounds like 'Horrible Histories'
Am I the only person to think of horrible histories with the way they say Tower of destiny
I am absolutely here for deranged Laurie.
Nice bedknobs and broomsticks reference, Laurie!
As a patreon member, I'm glad I randomly clicked on this version of the video as I would have missed the funny #Ad :D
Ooh looking forward to learning about Deep Sea Adventure
Need more of this game! New favorite
Laurie literally screwed Laurie😂😂
Nice Bedknobs and Broomsticks reference... make that more than one reference.
The end of that first game was quite hilarious. :)
This video made we want to try this game.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks !!! ❤
Oooo can’t wait to watch Jon hopefully crash the ship repeatedly next week in Mlem! I’ve been having a lot of playing it recently, hope the gang enjoys it too!
Gotta love Oink Games. Maybe in the near future, they'll play my favorite, Startups
Get on Boar....*Bubbling drowning noises*
I’m very happy it’s Tuesday
That was fantastic XD Might have to look out for this game.
I just made I comment that on the crypto monopoly episode saying I’m gonna go look for call of Cthulhu content. But 30 secs later I’m here lol.
The ad promos are so good
27:55
'I'm not a coward'
*casually breaks arm*
Aren't you supposed to remove 1 per treasure when moving?
Yeah they seem to have forgotten this rule. Let's see how far into the video they remember it.
They notice at the end of the first round 😅
Amazing game to bring new gamers in on. Love this game
A Board Game Club where everyone unravels mentally.
Oh man Poor Laurie.
I'm so britishpilled I read that as deep tea adventure
One of my favorites! Thanks people 😄
I love this Surf Shark saga they have. It is chefs kiss.
Diving bell ends is an amazing wheel of fortune before and after
Their bones in the ocean together will be
I could not play this and have fun. I'd be irrationally angry at the Laurie's and Blair's playing with me.
Fun to watch though 😂
i'm starting to question if surf shark really dose sponser this show and somone didn't just find some shark masks and wanted an excuse to add this bit into the show.
Lots of things don't kill you by lack of oxygen. Blunt force and fire, to just name two.
Now we just need an excuse for all of them to play a whole game in rubber masks
See you at the UKGE!
In our group, this game is called Rick Kills Us All because take it from me, Rick is the Blairiest player to ever Blair.
Blair won both games, so her strategy worked well.
@@lucone2937 mix of strategy, good roles, other players overextending and other players getting poor roles
Serious missed opportunity not bringing back Sully's shark song. 🎶I'm...havin' a nice time🎶
Ok, the surfshark VPN ad got me good. I wish all ads were that entertaining.
I've noticed that the key is to go first, or as early as possible...
Love this game so much
Gotta love Tuesdays.
i miss the mid game interviews with the players
I think they're misunderstanding the meta of this game... You all don't take early treasures at all then when someone gets very far ahead you all turn you back and leave them to die with their high value treasure.
Different groups can have different metas, this game seems really based on the social dynamics of any given group that plays it
@@ezracohen6020 yeah each board game group can have totally different metas and it's obvious this is the first time any of them played it.
But the joy when everyone realizes the resource system doesn't tick in until the first looting, that's where the fun begins.
Like theoretically you can have a gentleman's agreement and go all the way to the end and each get a ridiculous high value number and then rush back and sorry Steve you were last Fate of the dice rolls..
Or and here's my hilarious play of the game and I'm a bastard, when you see they're all so far ahead and you can't join. You just start to pick up treasure non-stop, not to win but to kill them.
If you're ahead first round, the only reason you can't just immediately win is just trying not to be a dick.
If you're watching this later, no, they really don't adapt strategy between rounds at any point.
Diving bell ends....... genius.
That was hilarius, would love to see if tgey can make some house rukes with this
It would make more sense if the more loot you have, the faster you would be descending (as the loot slows you down on the way up). Also, if this were played with normal dice.
Amazing ad 😂😂👏👏
I love this game
Is there any reason not to pick up a treasure on the last turn if you know for a fact you arnt getting back?? If you take the treasure and compact the track, it can cause some really interesting situations for the later rounds.
