Foreigner living in Japan here, I moved to Nagoya when I was nineteen years old because I was scouted from my home in Australia to pursue a career in Sumo. My first two years I ate nothing but rice and leftover chanko, because the strong and older rikishi always eat first. Even though I only ate tonjiru and rice I became strong, and even though I am retired now such little things can show a lot about who you are.
Do not be ashamed at being frugal, or showing your struggling, it only makes you tougher and stronger. There is no shame in what you eat, only how you act, and you act with great humility.

@askjapan9669 I feel like you're being a little hard on yourself here. It's pretty common for the fear of judgment to be worse than the actual judgment itself. Your coworkers wouldn't look down on you for what you eat; a sandwich is a perfectly fine lunch, and if they thought it was out of the ordinary, they'd likely react with compassion rather than thinking you miserable for it. It's also easy to assume here that they might still judge you anyways, but if they'd judge you for the food you eat, they would judge you for just about anything. Living in a world where you're constantly assuming the worst of people makes one miserable, and if someone sees the world like that, it's no condemnation of you if they see you like that too, because that's how they see everything. Please try to not bring yourself down over your lunch. I think you'll be a lot happier if you don't. Best wishes to you and your family.

Where I come from you are a normal great guy. I understand you. I spent most of my life worrying what other people think. He made it instead of me, thinking that as a Japanese person he can impress them better than I can. We also packed a whole apple as a snack, so the teachers were aghast because the apple was not neatly sliced and arranged, and anyway, we should have packed "proper snacks", a.k.a. popular low-grade junk food. That was in kindergarten. Later at school, parents also joined in and gave the same feedback, added by comments about the volume (too little). There is nothing wrong with eating this lunch (which looks btw delicious to me) in front of your colleagues. I eat a similar lunch everyday at work (egg sandwich, coffee, banana). I think you would feel more miserable if you started to isolate yourself and feel ashamed of what you’re having. Try to practice more gratitude for having food some people would do anything to have what you've right now in your hand and treat the situation as a ((phase)) until things start to get better. Turn everything into motivation. I know it’s easier said than done, but I believe feeling ashamed and eating alone will only bring more sadness and pain. You will feel better once you put systems into place and work on the new plan to improve the conditions, sometimes we feel better not at the finish line but also while making the changes because we feel that we actually doing something and it gives this sense of getting the power back then this snow ball effect will bring more positive things. So be proud and eat it in front of them.

I really want to cry seeing videos like this. My heart breaks seeing sincere and hardworking people struggle so much. It's also infuriating that so many people work hard but get paid almost nothing, especially these days when everything gets more and more expensive with each day. And the taxes seem to go up, but people are not paid accordingly. We are expected to work twice harder and twice more at the cost of our health and overall life quality.
You shouldn't be ashamed of your situation. Things happen in life, but you are still a real man who works hard and you give all you have to support your family. Only those should be ashamed who dare to make fun of and belittle people like you.
I sincerely wish all the good luck, success and prosperity to you and your family. I hope you always stay in good health. And I hope that this situation won't last long.

Don't worry about what other people are thinking about you my friend.
They aren't thinking about you. They are thinking about themselves. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with eating cheap.
Live for what is best for you not for someone else.

Don't worry, people who judge lunches are miserable themselves. You are doing your best and that's all that matters. As others have said I like the honesty of this channel and people in similar situation, age group, or demographics can relate. Don't wait to fix your tooth, it will either get more expensive or you will need to have the tooth removed. I find it refreshing how honest you are about everything. Maybe if you were this open with your coworkers you wouldn't feel the need to hide from them.

It's probably a wisdom tooth, more trouble than it's worth alot of the time anyway. Probably cheaper to just have it removed.

@@yeahtbh.161 No he didn't?...He literally said he doesn't want to fix it right now because he wants to save money. This is how my family was my whole life and raised me like this, or buying cheap products to "save money" but end up spending 10x more money on replacements, I can sadly resonate with this video so I'm not speaking from a "high horse" or something either.
