1:32 Fun fact, that bit of Dalek graffiti almost got the BBC in trouble with the police as they deemed it vandalising public property. Luckily the paint was removable and they avoided a law suit that could have bankrupted the studio.
I know that this was the second story of the second season but I am convinced that due to Susan‘s departure and the climactic return of the Daleks in this story it would have been absolutely perfect for the finale of the first season
One of the best scenes I think the 60s ever did, and I mean that, the music whilst basic has been stuck in my head for about 12 years now, the Daleks on the home turf, I can imagine a generation of viewers who lived through world war 2 and were always scared that the Nazis would invade and would be patrolling the streets had those same nightmares brought up here by this very scene
Obviously, the original dalek story has lots of metaphors to the nazis, but what I only just noticed myself is the bit in this story with the daleks on the stairs with their extended plungers is very fascist. Almost like they are giving salutes. Something I missed as a kid seeing this for the first time
I was terrified hearing the music and then it says bongos in the description!!? Never thought I'd see the day when bongos could be so horrifying. The 1960's really showed me up today. *Edit:* Oh shoot. I was really emotionally moved by the bongos here but I just learned they were edited in! The made that whole lengthy comment about bongos and they aren't even the real music! Looks like 2017 was the real one to show me up today! XD
Seems like the plunges are being used as some sort of detectors, like satellite dishes or something. Maybe they're trying to pick up reble radio frequencies or something? Possibly even helps them navigate better given that the sensor globes probably only help in corridors and enclosed spaces. Interesting.
Because in the 60s low houses, with broad front porches, having either no upper floor or upper rooms set in the roof, typically with dormer windows, were terribly frightening and disturbing.
0:17 I thought that was music but...nope, it's actually the sound of the Daleks going across the bridge, since they couldn't remove the wheel sounds coming from the Dalek props in post production Works well AS music though
The scene than got me back then was the robomen (in tatty clothing and fitted with a helmet used to control them) driving a bunch of slaves working to dig the great pit (again folks in tatty ordinary clothing) with whips. Back then WW2 was still a real thing, a time when that kind of thing actually happened. The film blew it (IMHO) by blinging it all up, definitely 'made for kids', the TV series was a bit darker (like the time the Dr was thinking of clubbing an injured Thall to death because he was slowing them up in their escape). Of course back then he was just an inventor who had built a time machine he couldn't control properly not just another superhero (yawn).
You know when Daleks mean business when they have their plungers fully extended.
Lmao
"OOOHH MATRON !"
Yes because they would crush your face with them. Seriously. Look that the episode "Dalek" to see what I mean.
They're just pleased to see you
London in the 22nd Century looks like London in the 1960s. Weird.
Still the 2nd best Dalek story though.
Wonderful architecture, much of which we still have fifty years later.
Maybe the 1960's just came back into fashion.
Originally the first story draft was set in 2020, and the Daleks were to have invaded in the late 1980s.
Peylix-Ohm the daleks destroyed the newer buildings
1:11 the Dalek sees stairs directly ahead of it, then keeps going forwards... Daleks have been flying since 1964.
Daleks don't fly, they levitate, except when they meet a wee boy in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.
@steve gale ruclips.net/video/3_cJ9BlMCw8/видео.html
@erosion271not exactly, levitating is more like hovering slightly off the ground. Flying would be more like going directly about the sky
@erosion271also we have seen daleks literally FLYING in space and also really high up in the sky so yea :p
Dalek makes sure tge camera isn't filming and suddenly sprouts legs to climb them and then continues like nothing happened
And now Doctor Who presents: Running from Daleks with out of time bongos
No but seriously, though. What the hell is going on with the music here?
Jokke Mursula it will be a way of getting around copyright because the bbc is really harsh on using footage
@@alexanderwalker3906 this was the music in the actually episode
Musique concrete and polyrhythms must be a nightmare for you :P
This bongo music was made by Delia. She was brilliant. She could make music out of anything. The 60s wasn’t as advanced as the 80s.
I remember a dalek running over my right foot at the 1964 Ideal Homes Exhibition in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow. It bloody hurt.
oh dear
The imagery and desperation made this a very memorable tale.
1:32 Fun fact, that bit of Dalek graffiti almost got the BBC in trouble with the police as they deemed it vandalising public property. Luckily the paint was removable and they avoided a law suit that could have bankrupted the studio.
steve gale you’re just jealous that he got a like from the Channel and not you! 😝
What georgeowain said is true
@SprocketList Yeah but now a days they could just cgi it on. No harm done.
2:58 The flag on Number 8 put there by Robomen.
I know that this was the second story of the second season but I am convinced that due to Susan‘s departure and the climactic return of the Daleks in this story it would have been absolutely perfect for the finale of the first season
I think it was filmed in the last block of the first season but this and planet of giants were held back
Change the setting to 1963 earth, have ian and barbara leave with Susan and that would probably make a wonderful finale for Season 1.
One of the best scenes I think the 60s ever did, and I mean that, the music whilst basic has been stuck in my head for about 12 years now, the Daleks on the home turf, I can imagine a generation of viewers who lived through world war 2 and were always scared that the Nazis would invade and would be patrolling the streets had those same nightmares brought up here by this very scene
this funky music makes me wanna watch 60's stories even more
[DRUMMING INTENSIFIES]
Daleks look frightening even when they're wobbly.
Nah
I always think of these scenes when I’m walking through Westminster to my office in Vauxhall
Londons even scarier these days even without daleks.
The black and white look with the bongos makes this clip seem like it's a sci-fi art film from the 1960s.
Doctor Who predicted social distancing 130 years before the Daleks invaded
This is in no way social distancing
And it is 56 years not 130!
In the timeline the Daleks invaded in 2150 so I’m going off by that
@@JAKECOT_CENTER In the Dalekmania Peter Cushing films it was 2150. In the original serial it was 2164.
This scene and the music is so iconic!
I don't mind the Dalek movies with Peter Cushing as Dr. Who, but I would take scenes from the TV serials like this over the Dalek movies any day.
I was a little kid back in the day and the difference was the movies were in colour. Both the TV show and the movies were great IMHO.
No joke this story was frightening to see NOBODY on the streets but daleks
I love the music to this scene. It fits so well.

They *are* giving salutes
Patrolling London almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

Obi-Wan Kenobi I’m pretty sure that’s the original soundtrack, at least that’s what’s in the story’s DVD release.
It’s the original
When I heard the bongos at first I though it was just the sound of the dalek's wheels cluttering on the road for some odd reason...
This is the original score
do you take your clips off the internet or DVD?
If I have the DVD it's from the DVD, if I don't, it's usually from a torrent.
Trying to avoid the police during the corona virus
There is a video on twitter somewhere of a police force that sent a dalek to patrol the streets
RIP William Russell.
Huh, I guess the shard and the egg are gonna get knocked down by the time we hit the 22nd century. I'll try to remain calm about that :/
Of course Daleks could levitate in 1964 - how else does the Dalek get out of the Thames at the cliffhanger of Episode One?
How did they get the city to look so empty? This is over 40 YEARS before they made 28 Days Later!!!
They filmed the scenes in the very early hours of the morning.
@@robstoppablecosplay Did they film in summer?
@@jrp312 I'm not sure. I'll have to check.
@jrp312 The location filming in Central London was done during 23-27 August, 1964.
Honestly the music kind of makes this scene scary
My favorite part of this scene is the bongos
RIP Ann Davis - 27th April 2022.
I’m deeply upset to hear the death of David Graham who did the voice of the daleks, I was a fan him, thank u for the hard he did. I miss u .

wow 1960s london is more beautiful than now
They should have chopped the top off a Dalek and made him a motorised wheelchair.
That's actually a good idea.
it did manifest many years later with Davros.
war pigs that percussive backdrop reminds me of a soldier drama.
1:10 Bird.
"Winged pest"
The drums are reminiscent of new Battlestar Galactica series!
Wait if u look in the background at 1:37 next to the white building and darker building are those people strolling down the street?
The History Critic Guy yes it is
The intense bongos don’t even match the scene who thought of the idea . Hmmm yes let’s have some bongos in this scene
very iconic
Nice to the boats survived the Dalek invasion @00:03
Great sequence I just don’t really get the deal with the drums or bungalows or whatever there called

theres no way, i refuse to believe it
Reminds me of Orwell's 1984
Is this a classic or a Legendary episode?
Legendary
Classic/Legendary/NuWho. Oh, I hate it so much when a fandom splits itself into schisms.
2:47 The things you could get away with in 1964. Can't they bring back the Nazi salutes for the modern Daleks?
Yep 🤣

As if WW2 isn't a real thing today. Though, we don't have collaborationist governments like that nowadays, I'll admit.
