Every officer who joins the police whether planing to become armed etc must go through a probationary 2 year period as its mandatory this is only in place for new applicants if you have previous police experience you don't have to. But ya if you are a recruit you must complete a two probationary process after that you are free to choose whatever specific unit you want to join. Whether that be dog handlers, armed police, or just stay as a normal police constable who's not specially trained for a role, public order police enforcement, traffic enforcement police tho I would recommend traffic enforcement police, you get to drive high powered vehicles and are specifically trained for traffic enforcement plus the u.k has a decreasing number of these specialist police who patrol the motorways and enforce traffic rules and regulations, however it's up to you. Should you be uncomfortable being unarmed but still want to join the armed police a different way you can join the Ministry of defence of police or Civil nuclear constabury after training you will always be armed. And if I remmber right you can transfar to join other armed police forces such as the Metropolitan armed police but I may be wrong.

The police don't need to match the protest numbers. They use strategies to steer crowds in certain directions or disperse crowds. Not all protests are violent though, so the police will just be nearby in case of any issues.

There is a new Bill aka law which the UK government is bringing in, parts of it has changes to the way people can protest. Things like not harass or intimidate bystanders, no blocking of the roads so that Ambulances can't respond etc etc. All things the XR protestors did in London over the last 2 years. There are other parts of the bill which give stronger sentences for some crimes. Its going to be interesting to see which side those who vote in the house of commons take, stronger sentences for serious crimes or the right for protestors to harass and intimidate people who what to go about their daily life.
