Tomato & Onion Pie, a delicious southern, and very Alabama, dish

- Do you need a side dish for a special occasion? Or just a dish for an everyday dinner side? This tomato pie is as easy as it comes. You can have this together and in the oven in just a matter of minutes then you can sit and enjoy your family and friends. Serve it at a BBQ or with fried chicken. It's delicious with all meals. Ingredients:
1 unbaked pie crust
4-5 tomatoes, sliced
1 tsp salt
10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/2 cup chopped green onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
3/4 cup mayonnaise
fresh ground black pepper
Directions:
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Line a baking sheet with paper towels. Slice tomatoes and lay on paper towels. Sprinkle tomatoes with salt. Set aside for 10-15 minutes. Use clean paper towels to pat excess moisture from the tomatoes.
Poke a few holes in pie crust and par-bake for 10 minutes. After crust is baked, reduce temperature to 350 degrees.
Combine basil, green onion, and garlic in a small bowl. Set aside. In a separate bowl, stir together mayonnaise, black pepper, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
When crust is baked, layer half of the tomatoes on bottom of pie crust. Sprinkle with basil mixture. Spread half of the cheese mixture on top of basil. Repeat layers, tomatoes, basil mixture, and cheese.
Decrease oven temperature to 350 degrees. Bake pie for 30 minutes, uncovered, until the cheese melts and begins to brown on top. Let rest for 10 minutes, slice and enjoy. Развлечения

Hi Karen, I've been making the Tomato Pie for years. I only use Mozzarella cheese, sometimes I'll use Monterey Jack and Mozzarella. Also a little Tip, I add a little extra, Mayonnaise, Basil and Onion. I take about 1/3 c. of the Mayonnaise mixture and spread it in the bottom of my prebaked cooled pie crust, before I put in the tomatoes. Doing this, gives the crust a buffer from the tomatoes, which can still have a lot of juice.

You can also put parmesan cheese on the bottom of the crust. That'll keep crust from getting soggy,once you add the filling

I love it when Mr. Jones arrives in time for the taste test. You're a beautiful couple. The tomato pie looks delicious, I'm going to have to try it. My sister makes a tomato tart during the summer months and we all love it. Or maybe we just love the taste of fresh tomatoes. We're in Missouri and when tomato season is over, we have to suffer through the Fall and Winter months with bland, flavorless tomatoes that are picked green and shipped from somewhere (maybe Mexico) . Bring on summer!!

I’m in NC and the tomato. pie is a popular here and in Ga. I make the pie quite a bit in the summer with fresh tomatoes.
I also use red onions when don’t have the green. Think pimento cheese will be good. Am going to try it soon.
I put some of the cheese on the bottom next to the crust. It helps to prevent sogginess.

I've made one of these a couple of times usually in mid summer when I have lots of tomatoes. When I first heard of it,I couldn't believe it could possibly be any good. I was so wrong. It is very good and something so different.

Hi Karen, Thanks for the recipe for this wonderful Southern specialty. I have never eaten this but must give it a try. Have you ever made tomato jam? We always made this at the height of summer when we had lots of tomatoes. It is one of my favorite jam. Didn't know if this was part of Southern cooking. Susan
Mrs Karen, this looks delicious, however, I really dislike basil. Do you think it's essential to the flavor, or would it be okay to omit it all together? I like italian seasonings, most herbs, except for the aromatics, like basil, rosemary and mint.
I wouldn't leave out seasoning but try subbing Italian or rosemary, whatever you do like. That's the beauty of cooking, you can change to your taste. Let me know if you do ♥️
Hi Karen - Tomato Pie is one of my all-time summer favorites! My recipe is almost identical to yours, but I sprinkle 3 to 4 slices of crisp-fried crumbled bacon over the mayonnaise layers. I hope you'll try this addition, I think you'll like it!
