    If your doing a lot of data recoveries, I would definitely invest in a PC3000 and a DDI 4 disk imager, with the PC3000 you can select or download controller , just desolder the nand and plug directly on to the PC3000 nand reader and as long as you've selected the right controller and the nand is working it should be able to rebuild the data, the DDI would be used predominantly for data recovery from mechanical hard disk

    Have you ever thought about investing in like a pc-3000 portable iii for recovery. It takes a lot of work, but then you'd be able to do recoveries like this without the controller. As someone that does this as a hobby out of their house it's not feasible because of the price tag. However for a shop owner it might be, if you wanted to get into more data recovery of course.

    NAND chip can be transferred over to the good board...but heat may cause the data loss in NAND chip (they are not so immune to bear heat, their MAX storage temp. is between 150-200 C, during manufacturing recommended temp to reflow chip is about 280-300 C for just couple of seconds ) as you have already reflowed it directly , may be you can reflow it from bottom of board next time if its has single NAND chip.

    I would be surprised if switching controllers worked, as the controller stores the bad sectors information and wear levelling information on it. So if you changed the controller the data would be in different locations than the operating system expect. The same would apply if the flash memory was transferred to another device. You may get back some data by doing this but I expect that most of the files so recovered would be corrupted.

  • @aladdinalmasabli4382
    @aladdinalmasabli4382 3 года назад

    I don't recommend swapping different controllers. This can damage the data if the PC attempts to write to it.
    To recover data directly from NAND/Disks, you would need some equipment and good knowledge of file systems, sectors, cylenders.. etc.
    It is very time-consuming to decap SD cards, solder NANDs and try to "guess" their sizes, file system, and data patterns.
    If anyone wants to see, there are some channels that do this like "HDD Recovery Services"

    USB not recognized is controller side not flash side. If the flash was bad you would see a device that will be of zero size and most likely set read only. I deal alot with USB to Serial controllers like the ch340 series for robotics projects among other things.

    I don't think you can measure resistors, unless one side is lifted. If an other resistor is in parallel, you measure the sum of that circuit part. Ofc this is still good method to compare boards.

  • @techstuffandparts

    There should be a software that can simulate the controller so we can interprete the data from any flash drive memory chip, but that requiers a data base with all the controllers and all the algorithms, that's why the big companies asks a loft of money for theyr recovery software and gear. If someone has a software like that at a decent price i would love to buy it.

  • @stefanlechner
    @stefanlechner 3 года назад

    That was a nice try, sad that it didnt work. I dont know if its just a serial number or if it is possible that you need exactly the same chip. When there is a short in the chip itself, there is no other way to change it. But i think also that every board from the same manufacture has a chip with another serial.
    Maybe there was another faulty thing on that board.
    You could also try to use a reader for the nand-chip but they are not really cheap.
    But thank you for the video and show us your hard work. Greets from austria

    If that USB is formatted for a Linux machine, say ext4 filesystem, Windows definitely wouldn't recognize it, I'm not sure about Apple. I'm fairly sure if it was a filesystem issue, Windows would offer to format the drive, so it's probably not going to help to try it on different systems anyway.

    I would once try to use the donor controller chip, since they use same pcb schematic, some companies Use different batch name but sometimes its compactable chip,
    I recovered a flashdrive 5yrs ago, with same pcb different controller, for final chance used the donor controller with different batch no and Flash drive worked perfectly fine.
    Controller is responsible for USB detection. If it's showing unrecognized USB on windows, it means Bad controller OR damaged pcb layers.
    If the Good controller doesn't work on patient Drive, it means that the pcb layer on patient drive is damaged.
    If usb detected with correct usb name then it could be bad nand or not mounted usb, requires mounting drive letter

    You cannot just replace controllers.
    Each individual controller, even made with the same model and batch, is configured to read and unscramble their NAND chip in a very particular way using An MPTool.
    If you cannot fix the board, the only other way is to directly read the NAND and unscramble it, which is the expensive part of the process.

    • @LuxorVan
      @LuxorVan 3 года назад

      If they are from the same batch for the same brand and memory size they should work, the controller is not individually programmed after being installed on a board the firmware is written in a maskrom inside the controller which was programmed during the controllers manufacturing and cannot be changed. Although they do list the sm3257en as supporting in system programming for firmware updates that option would most likely be for the consumer side.

  • @robbirobson7330
    @robbirobson7330 3 года назад

    at least drive should show up as insert disk or greyed out disk without drive letter if the controller is working, also with the incompatible controller is should be recognized but with missing size so there may be a problem with the board so you need to transfer the nand and the controller to another board to make sure there are no other broken tracks or shots. also if the controller is heating up maybe its not dead its the nand that is shorted or something else. Also most newer drives the controller is paired with the memory and it scrambles / encrypt the drive so you need software to unscramble it but if the drive is older a controller swap can still work.
