If you don't mind the black and white screen and you don't want a multiple protocol transmitter inside the unit. The 2019 is ok. It will Never have the touch screen that the Radiomaster TX16S has.
Micro USB W.T.F? Are you sure they're calling it the 2019 and not the 1999? Usual FRSky half arsed product, any news on the awaited TBS Tango then I can upgrade to a proper transmitter?
Hi Andy, I've not long purchased an X9D plus SE 2019. I have been flying RC planes and quadcopters using an old Spektum DX8 for about 7-8 years. I've needed a few more channels for my fpv planes plus, I've have a few brown-outs lately that's why I decided to change to FrSky. Would it be possible for you do a video up-dating this transmitter step by step or link me to a good video as the only video's I can find are of older or different transmitter's or not in English. Thanks.
You continue to impress Andy. An intelligent and honest review as usual. X9D+ and a back-up X-lite is what I'll be sticking with. Beyond my skills as well as a lack of funds keeps me from progressing or getting newer equipment. Keep on rockin' Andy, Jeff
I’ve got a spektrum transmitter and some models that I was interested in aren’t supported. So I was looking for an frsky radio so that I could use those models. Looks like this one isn’t going to be the one I choose, hopefully it’ll be able to get the old model so that I can use a different module.
Thanks for the review. I just got mine yesterday and fortunately release candidate 1 for opentx companion 2.3 just got released and the latest firmware I flashed today gives all the external module capabilities including crossfire!
Are you still using a 3s battery with it? Looking at the manual and the sticker in the battery bay says 2s only. I got a 3s LiFe that i used b4 i read the manual and it worked, but I dont want to wind up burning it up. Anybody got any info on that?
Great overview and explanations Andy, I have and still use the original Taranis X9D non plus or SE version and it still works flawlessly. I just don't see the point in upgrading any of it to newer models if there's no need to, plus I'm not willing to give up the stable OpenTX version that supports Crossfire, or the d8 protocol quite yet when it would render a lot of my current models obsolete.
Seems a daft place to stick the USB point for charging right in the middle of the radio at the back - very accessible not (is the supplied USB cable right angled ?) . Plus for safety reasons I don't really fancy a LIPO stuck in my radio and relying on some in-built charger. Is there a better safer alternative to a LIPO ? Does anybody know whether the buttons have been upgraded (held better within the transmitter so you don't have to re-glue or replace every six months)? Plus does the wheel feel solidly built (i.e better than the buttons on the previous one) ?
How can i plug this into my computer (to update firmware or use with Simulator), if the USB port does not work with a LiPo? Wouldn't this damage my battery?
Andy, can i get a D8 inside it? With or without an external module? Please i wanna connect it to my emax freestyle and i lose signal straight away cause i only can connect through d16
So for black friday I decided it was finally time to get my first fpv drone I have been flying line of sight drones for awhile. I wanted the newest version of everything so I purchased this exact model ( FrSky Taranis x9d + 2019 se) this is my first experience with any real radio controller and it has been a headache getting it setup I now have firmware: opentx-xd9+2019 version: 2.3.4 (af69e36a) the date is 12-25-2019 which is not a nightly build as far as I know but now I have access to crossfire it even brings up my nano which is good, I've programmed my switches its binded to my drone but nothing is working, the arming switch throttle nothing, it shows it on the channel monitor working I dont understand what I'm doing wrong.. any advice?
I have a 10 year old Spektrum DSM2 radio set and just getting back into the hobby. I haven't used my Spektrum in anger yet but from feedback I'm getting it's useless as a reliable radio platform....I was hoping this new radio set from FrSky was going to be the one to go for, I'll have to wait a little longer...
So Andy, please explain me one thing: For those who bought the X-lite (non pro) and all of the older taranis transmitters, will the new access protocol render all models useless? And if so, when should/would that happen? I've only recently joined the Frsky hype-train (been die hard spektrum fan for 10years) and since there is more and more videos of the new access protocol transmitters and receivers I'm kinda worried that I made a mistake. Like is it really going to impact us that bad? I mean they will eventually try to discontinue all the ACCST protocol products I believe since Frsky is going to force everyone to switch? I'm confused. And bit angry at the same time.... Great video again! Thank you for being"real" with all the products. Great job! 5*!
@@MikeHarrisFPV the first Xlite has been discontinued if you look and replaced with the Xlite s which has access so the first xlite wont get access. the original x9d wont get access either. the horus range has a new board that has to be installed. Michael Harris me too. I’m new to all this and just bought the 2019 x9d plus SE and now I feel like I made a mistake... but I’m so confused I’m not even mad. Haha. I just want to rip a drone that’s not a “backyard flyer”, because I got line of sight flying down like China Town! Someone please help me
Hi Andy, I have the Taranis 2019 with the old opentx 2.3.0 firmware. Can you please advise me if I need an SD card to update to the latest firmware and is it easy to do. I noticed that I don’t have crossfire on my external rf either. Very poor from frsky I think. Thanks for any advise you can give. 👍
Hello thank for the video. Should i change the opentx version to have the crossfire ? Because i bougth both of them in juin and i can t make the changes it s difficulte to find the solution Jmw
cool beans, so basically just hold out for a while for the bugs then get one. I'm curious if when i upgrade to the x9d plus se 2019, can I use my current x9d plus as a buddy box. I only use the FrSky Taranis Compatible Receiver X8R 8-Channel receivers and no lua scripts. But if receivers are being reworked, i may have to buy new receivers? :( ugg $$$$ i dont have lol Oh and will it even work with the tinyhawk quadcopter?
I think you get more bftb if you would stick to (an upgraded?) QX7 but maybe 18650 batteries by default, internal chargingcircuit, the full size modulebay (as before), detachable antenna, and hall sensor gimbals by default for a little over 100€. Colordisplay, additional sliders or buttons should be optional upgrades you can do on your own to keep the costs down. Kind of a "Lego" System. Great analysis Andy👍
Sorry to go off topic but please please can you do a review and overlay on screen your amazing tunes that you do on the iFlight Nazgul5 227mm 4S. I've seen the 6s one but I would be very grateful for a 4s one. 👍
Good video! But I did not understand the crossfire situation. I use a full size module and am in the market for either this new remote or the new x10/s express version. But I am hesitant because I don’t know it Will work properly with crossfire without hardware mods
There's some weired flex going on between Frsky and OpenTx... Anyways OpenTx 2.3 will fully support this radio with every feature OpenTX offers (including Crossfire). FrSky took a propably nightly build and made it their stable release candidate with speced down features. OpenTX will take some more time to implement their massive amount of features and protocols. For now I am using the 2.3 nightly build and can use crossfire just fine on my x9d plus 2019 SE without any hardware mod. Also reducing the baudrate is not neccessary. So that's awesome!
@@AndyRCchannel true, actually dealing with that "being forced to upgrade" right now with betaflight, my f3 flight controllers are not supported anymore. What sucks about that is im using the tbs powercube, which only have one FC available. So I have to replace the whole system, (ESC, VTX, FC).
I don't see the point of any of this. I have a tarranis. I can bind to an 2.4 Frsky reciever I have r9m and I have a crossfire. I can get recievers for all three. What benefit is there to change anything

Hi Andy, I would like to see a video about internal hardware changes, eg CPU ,PCB etc. Is there still S3 connection on the PCB for a 6 position switch? Great video's thanks!
Hi Andy, great review! I have a question tho, the manual says about USB charging: "only Li-ion / Li-po battery" 2S Li-Batteries balance charging. So can you charge Li-Pos using USB?? Have you tried already? :))
I think the light either goes out or changes color, iv switched to a lipo as It can go months before it needs charging but you need a separate lipo charger for that. also did it to power crossfire better
They were suppose to send me one but I never heard off them again. I think it was around the time of all the drama so I don't think I was seen as a priority
@@AndyRCchannel Maybe give it another shot, the new version with the internal module and hall sensor gimbals is the new king from the looks of it, I hope
Hype or hate, I can’t get past lack of D8. Don’t need 24 channels, security, etc. Fine if you only use D16 or access. Too many whoops and micros won’t fly with it. Not about to buy a multi module. That’s silly.
whats the oldest model you have running D8 that you fly frequently? the reason i ask is D8 is a shoddy protocol with poor range. Its on borrowed time and im not flying models on d8 that are 3 years old im flying models 3 months old. so what if something new comes out and all of a sudden its running access and not d8. Then what to you do? the spare parts will get discontinued for the new stuff and you have no choice to upgrade just like when analogue TV went to digital. It would be crazy to watch HDTV on an 800x600 analogue TV. The old stuff is what to be on right now. But its worth thinking about what the future holds.
AndyRC Tinyhawk, Tinyhawk Freestyle though now they say it supports D16, but more importantly race a couple variants of Newbeedrone Hummingbirds with lots of friends here - it’s new and uses D8. Whoop racing has really grown and many races are Brushless D8 only. I use an X-lite. Bought it after waiting weeks for news on X-lite Pro only to be disappointed in lack of support for standard protocols. Used Q X7 before that and X9D before that. Would love an X-lite pro but $200 and then $40 for multimodule seems silly to get what I have for $130. Glad you’re enjoying it. Looks good.
Would like to see Auto Updates & Auto Bind in the near future .. also would like to be able to get into the CLI in Betaflight when quad won’t connect . Unless there is another way I don’t know of . Biggest issue is not having the quad connect to Betaflight and spending hours trying to troubleshoot drivers . Going through that right now . Anyway Cheers Andy & Thanks 🙏
Another fantastically done video, with a voice of reason and common sense. I bought my X-Lite Pro as all my RX's in my race quads are R-XSR. I have had no problems. Great TX. But, no supported by OpenTX yet. Good updates from the FrSky site though 👻
Awesome review, as always, Andy! 😃 I definitely agree with you and the radio looks fantastic. Personally, I have a "brand new" X9D Plus SE, so I don't plan to change. But... Well, eventually I'm going to have to buy a second one, for my father. So... Who knows. 😊
Thanks for the honest review Andy, I've been waiting for more info on this as I've just purchased one. I bought the jumper t16 and it's good for the money I suppose but feels a bit cheap especially the gimbals (Hall ones also) and not so good for racing. Looking forward to getting my hands on the new one. Check this link for a lipo battery and charger that you can get specially for the x9d plus 2019, I was a bit gutted when you said it only charged li ion batts but it does so lipo also👍. Just seen you have one linked so scrap the last bit 🤣
People who criticized FrSky decision to go ACCESS or whatever and accused of bullying venders will still buy Jumper T16 rather there is a controversy or not. They just looking for excuses to justify a switch from FrSky to Jumper T16 because they want something cheap. No wonder the local hobby shops are closing.
I would say for my needs way too little way too late.. I bought the Jumper T16 and it gives this one a spanking.. I still love my Taranis XD Plus.. and will continue to use it.
the T16 has the inferior components that will prevent it from moving forward. So while most things spank this new taranis now. they are on borrowed time. in the same way that f1 flight controllers had to be phased out because we demanded too many things from them. Its my prediction that with the future looking digital. the hardware in the jumper will be obsolete. This is just my prediction though and if you are happy with your current setup then definitely stick with it. This is kind of a tomorrows world type of product.
@@AndyRCchannel I will buy the radio of the future in the future.. my FPV RC stuff needs older tech to fly reliably.. you get to fast forward with all the new stuff that most can't afford.
So do you think that CRSF will be possible in the future without nightly builds? I wrote an Email to FrSky and they told me, that they won’t support that... that would be a death sentence for them in my opinion..
Well, think I'm more confused now that I watched than before ... ha ha. I still have my "old reliable" X9D+ which, at my age, is sufficient. I just hope that I will be able to keep buying receivers that work with it. I still have a X8R that came with my X9D+, which has never been used, but it looks so HUGE compared to some of the tiny receivers out there now. Thanks for the look. Cheers.
there will be a point i imagine when the receivers will come flashed with the access protocol when you buy them but you can flash back the old firmware despite people saying you cant. I had to do it several times in my review of the xlite pro.
@@AndyRCchannel We will see how it goes. I have a R9M and some R9mm and a Slim+ with Flex firmware. The only spare R9mm I was able to order has now the additional label "Access" . I think I must reflash this one since there is no Access firmware for my R9M....untill now.
Good review, I agree with you, I appreciate the fact that you ignore all the bullshit and get straight down to brass tacs. Im hanging on to my taranis x9d plus for now.
This is my first FrSky, I used a Flysky i6x before. I set it up with crossfire (a pain for a newbie when you’re not used to it), but now I am really in love. Works perfectly.
I used to fly with an i6x I always loved the stick feel on that radio if it had a module bay I probably would have never stopped using it, props to you for doing that MOD i wasnt brave enough
Jonas Steckis it works if you use the companion pc-software to flash it to the latest OpenTX 2.3 beta firmware. Also you have to buy a micro SD card and copy the OpenTX files from the OpenTX website to it, so you can use the crossfire.lua script to bind and update the receiver. I am using the crossfire micro transmitter module in the radio, and a crossfire nano receiver in my diatone gtr 349 and it works perfectly.

@@AndyRCchannel I used to flash firmware through the opentx app. Is this still possible?
Hi Andy, great review! I have a question tho, the manual says about USB charging: "only Li-ion / Li-po battery" 2S Li-Batteries balance charging. So can you charge Li-Pos using USB?? Have you tried already? :))
All works great! You can charge it via usb, doing this for 2 weeks now
After I bought a x9lite and it didn't work with half my models and didn't work with my r9mlite module I decided to get the jumper t16
Your x9lite didn't work with your r9-lite? That's literally the radio that module was made for.
Noob question How do you know when the radio is fully charged ? can you tell? by the light indicator on the power button?
I think the light either goes out or changes color, iv switched to a lipo as It can go months before it needs charging but you need a separate lipo charger for that. also did it to power crossfire better
Hi #Andy. your coupon for x9d se 2019 is expired ?
I'm trying to buy now but doesn't work.
I have a question, why have you never reviewed the Jumper T16 yet?
They were suppose to send me one but I never heard off them again. I think it was around the time of all the drama so I don't think I was seen as a priority
@@AndyRCchannel Maybe give it another shot, the new version with the internal module and hall sensor gimbals is the new king from the looks of it, I hope
Does anyone know what the LS is on the mixer?
My 4 year old Taranis still rocks. Hall effect gimbals and a 3 cell 2500 Lipo makes me one happy RC nut.
I was planning on buying this radio before new years , does it support crossfire now ? Thx
I believe so.
or this 3000mah battery charge with usb?
I hope they go to USB-C for charging. I hope everybody goes to USB-C for charging..
Yes, I can't even... haha
Nope still the same OLD USB PLUG that the original XD9 HAD. NOT USB C.
hello,i buy this radio too,i dont undestedant crf work or no to this radio?thanks
Works with the nightly build. It's not supposed to be used in a real world environment, but it worked out for me so far...
Hello I buy the taranis x9d plus se 2019 and the R9 MM ôta receiver, did I need an external module??
You will need to buy an external module to connect to the R9 MM. The external module will also increase your range!
@@locallyengineered7944 thanx 😉
Can you please do an setup review please
Looking forward to a comparison of this with the Flysky FS-PL18 Paladin. I just bought one. Please add a tip$ link ;)
Will the 2019 R9M module not work for the older X9D+ ?
yes it will only change is 3s support
@@AndyRCchannel thanks Andy! 😊
Another fantastically done video, with a voice of reason and common sense. I bought my X-Lite Pro as all my RX's in my race quads are R-XSR. I have had no problems. Great TX. But, no supported by OpenTX yet. Good updates from the FrSky site though 👻
Bro I'm having problems binding my apus mq60
Awesome review, as always, Andy! 😃
I definitely agree with you and the radio looks fantastic. Personally, I have a "brand new" X9D Plus SE, so I don't plan to change. But... Well, eventually I'm going to have to buy a second one, for my father. So... Who knows. 😊
First🤗
Looks really nice 👍🏻 surly crossfire will be standard after updates ?
Thanks fir being First :)
AndyRC anytime Andy 😃 super fast broadband helps 🤗
@@DeanChapmanFPV I could do with some of that
AndyRC I got gigaclear 👍🏻 I’m not far ware town is close
Please review the Skystars Venom217
Thanks for the honest review Andy, I've been waiting for more info on this as I've just purchased one. I bought the jumper t16 and it's good for the money I suppose but feels a bit cheap especially the gimbals (Hall ones also) and not so good for racing. Looking forward to getting my hands on the new one. Check this link for a lipo battery and charger that you can get specially for the x9d plus 2019, I was a bit gutted when you said it only charged li ion batts but it does so lipo also👍. Just seen you have one linked so scrap the last bit 🤣
"I have no Horus in this race."
I have a horus in this race but now it needs its board replacing :(
People who criticized FrSky decision to go ACCESS or whatever and accused of bullying venders will still buy Jumper T16 rather there is a controversy or not.
Thanks for the info Andy! I was thinking about getting the new se model but I think I'll hold out for a while
So do you think that CRSF will be possible in the future without nightly builds? I wrote an Email to FrSky and they told me, that they won’t support that... that would be a death sentence for them in my opinion..
crossfire is going to be fully supported from my contact and with it being in the nightly s it would suggest so.
AndyRC thank you for that quick answer!
Thanks for the heads up Andy!
I have 2.3 now. bought in December
I just bought a QX7S for 50€, brand new, glad I didn't pay more ahah
Good review, I agree with you, I appreciate the fact that you ignore all the bullshit and get straight down to brass tacs. Im hanging on to my taranis x9d plus for now.
Gday Andy thanks for your great reviews mate.
NoProFPV Oh, no I didn’t mod my i6x, I use crossfire in the new X9D 2019. That was difficult enough due to the incompatible stock firmware. :-)
RC 'n' stuff oh gotcha!
@@ScopsLog work or no croofire on this radio?i dont undesteand :)
Waiting for x9d plus se video.nice video
Looks like a really good remote!!
Great Review!!!
👍😀👍
I still like my Qx7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Andy, I got an email to check out that secret drone that's not out yet...I started to watch the vid...then I fat fingered my keyboard...It instantly kicked me out...then when I tried to log back in it wants me to become a patreon, When I have been for awhile....Can you re-send me that vid...of tilt r...thanks man. Think that blue looks great on that remote, good video very informative answered a lot of questions I had about it
I'm lost.
Thanks Andy, very concise information..
When the fook are you taking a looook at the DJI system!? :D
There has been a lot of incorrect information put out about the dji digital system. Im working to correct that. But it takes time to do so. Id rather give you guys the right info than put a video out now
@@AndyRCchannel Awesome will look forward to your views. I finished building a cheap 5inch today and stuck DJI on it, the experience is phenomenal!!! Flying gaps and it's my 1st day flying. And for a newb to hobby, the total cost of everything wasn't that high comparitively 👍
It's September the 6th. You're welcome.
i make it the 7th?

Thank you Andy.
Frsky need to get inventive or they will just add to the pile of other lost RC companies

Damn nice.👍
Dude email us - let’s hit upwood mate
I hope nobody buys it because face it the only reason they came out with this is because jumper copyed them but frsky copyed jr in the beginning of there company i just hope they start selling old protocal recievers cheap i will buy as many as i can and make them last

i got this radio with a 2s lipo battery. if i charge it with usb and it reach 8.4v or more. can i damage the radio or the lipo? thanks
It's working range is 6.4-8.4 so you should be fine but I might be worried if it got above that.
