"L.A. Law" TV Intro

  • Boy, does this brings back memories. "L.A. Law," an NBC-TV legal drama that ran from 1986 to 1994, was once a terrific spur for water-cooler conversations. Created by Steven Bochco, it made good use of a great ensemble cast (Susan Dey, Corbin Bernsen, Michelle Greene, Michael Tucker, and Richard Dysart being my favorite regulars) and boasted parallel story lines as well as some terrific off-the-wall humor.

Songs like this remind me of childhood. My sister and I would be in bed for the night and hear this come on. Both mom and dad were home and all was right in our world. Days long gone.

Because shows have more commercials now. Up until the 90's, 1 hour= 45 to 48 minutes without commercials. Today, it's about 42 minutes. Credits scenes are shorter to lessen the cut into the actual show.
However, many streaming shows, like Stranger Things, Jack Ryan, Wednesday etc. have longer more atmospheric credit sequences since they don't have to deal with commercial and traditionnal broacasting time.

Not only were the shows I watched back then more interesting than the shows of today, even the shows I DIDN'T watch made major impressions on me. I never watched LA Law, but boy do I know this theme. Same with other themes like Falcon Crest, Knots Landing, Dynasty, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, and Murder, She Wrote. I wasn't into those shows, but I still knew the themes. And that's not even getting into the 60s and 70s sitcoms that everybody can sing the themes from, like Gilligan's Island, Happy Days, Three's Company, Welcome Back Kotter or the Brady Bunch. What a difference from today, when I know neither programs nor the themes. Just decided to try the new Quantum Leap and really missed Mike's classic theme. Seems nobody knows how to write TV music anymore. Long form intros are a lost art. Even something like Picard, which has a full-length intro, has such a weak, unmemorable theme song.

This must watch TV was a requirement for Introduction to Law class in college.
Professor would work elements of the show into his lectures and then give the class a pop quiz on the previous weeks episode.

Back in the good old days of the 80s. TV was of a much higher quality and the theme tune was much a part of the programme itself. Also programmes were not rushed like they are today

Before we decided to get rid of cable TV, I remember watching a few episodes of a reality series (around 2008/2010(?)) called Dog: The Bounty Hunter. If I remember correctly, the opening sequence(s) showed Dog (Duane) Chapman and I don't remember what kind of music was used (that is, if they ever had any). I definitely do recall that there was absolutely NOTHING in the way of opening credits (like LA Law style) and the entire time span from start to finish couldn't have been more than 30 seconds. I don't watch ANY of these reality shows nowadays and I wouldn't be surprised if the opening sequence(s) for the Kardashians/Pawn Stars/Storage Wars/Honey Boo Boo/etc. is maybe 15 seconds (if that).🤔🤔🤔

I so much relate to your comment!! I wanted to be like Jill Eikenberry and Michele Greene's characters when I'd grow up!! I was never really able to decide which one of those two empowered female lawyers I wanted to be like, so maybe an awesome combination of the best of both. Can you imagine that? Omg, that would be amazing, wouldn't it? So, am I a lawyer? Definitely not! I'm a teacher, but still watching each and every legal movie and show ever produced after this one.

I'm guessing that's what made the show more interesting because of a lack of them which meant less communication help prolonging the plot lines.
