Polaroid film is becoming harder and harder to come by (*tear*), but what if you still want that retro look? In today's episode, we show you how to make a polaroid framed picture in Photoshop!
To achieve this fun and retro effect, you will need two things: a picture of your subjects, and a picture of an actual Polaroid.
Move one photo onto the other by simply using the move tool! Click and drag while holding the shift key. Next, select the center square of the Polaroid. In this case, we use the magic wand tool, but you can use any selection tool of your choice. Next click the layer mask button, and your subjects will only show up in the middle of the polaroid.
Give your image an aged and stylized effect by using a hue/saturation layer. Choose a hue that you like (we chose a sepia color) and make sure that the colorize button is checked. Clip it to the underlying layer, and feel free to lower the opacity if the effect looks too strong.
Another step we take is to further the believability of the edges. Put a gaussian blur around the edges to blend the two images in together.

felt so sad when phlearn said they were giving up photography/photoshop and turn to make candles, I thought it was real!!! I hate this kind of prank call, which almost gave me a heart attack!!!! haha!!!! Good to know they are still out there!!!
How much do I love Aaron... let me count the ways! Absolutely love your tutorials! Your teaching style is fantastic! thank you so very much!
Literally love Phlearn. I have so much Aaron from Phlearn floating around in my head.
I want to Thank You SOOO much Aaron for giving us such amazing and helpful Photoshop tutorials! You're the Photoshop Wizard!
Not bad but this is on the back of the Polaroid not the front....
I can't get enough of your tutorials, I wish you would do them more often!
I definitely will, thanks!
I love what you did to the text omgg
Something so simple but yet so detailed and teaches the use of various tools, great tutorial.
wow, the blend if for the text is amazing! never thought to use it for this effect, thank you!!
Love your videos, but in this one you talk so much about making it look real and authentic, but you actually put the picture on the back (!) of the Polaroid... Like a boss.
wow, the blend if words wonders for the text, i'm so glad to have that trick at my disposal! never would have thought to try holding alt when clicking that slider, thanks so much
There's also a little dedicated clipping mask button at the bottom of adjustment layer windows that's saves you going in to menus.
Amazing as always, always look forward to your vids!
If it was me I would have just just selected the black area of the polaroid and hit delete, I wouldn't have thought of using a mask, but now I see the advantages when you began using the hue/saturation to apply to certain parts and not the whole image!
I love it! I love the edit and the final result.
This is a bloody awesome channel
This was pretty awesome! I will definitely be using this!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I made a brilliant polaroid photo and also learned a lot of new things about photoshop (amateur!) Like the little squiggle finger that can raise levels in the brushes and wands. I had no idea about that and used to type in numbers. You rock and hopefully you just helped me design my next book cover!!
Dear Aaron and Phlearn team. You guys rock!!! What are the chances of becoming part of the team?! I really enjoy watching your videos and have been a huge fan since before I started taking photography seriously. But seriously, I'd love to somehow maybe intern or something!!!!
So I was thinking to myself? I really want to learn how to do a Polaroid look. I was even considering on buying one... "So much money" . && Then you answered my prayers once again! You must be an Xmen ! Thanks So much
Hate to tell you, I'm pretty sure that is the BACK of a polaroid not the front, image side. Those three chemical pods at the bottom are on the back.

Amazing work! Now i know what that bar on the layer style does.
Oh very nice! I love this channel. Keep it up!
I have several friends who use polaroid cameras. They are enthusiasts, yes, but polaroid is definitely not (completely) dead :)
super great!)
Excellent explanation as usual
I love your Videos!
When using effects such as hue/saturation; you can save time and i find it benifiial to select clipping mask inside of the dialog, that way you can see the effects in the clipping masking. there is a little arrow at the bottom of the dialog. Great Video!
I love your energy!
Has anyone else noticed he used the back side of the Polaroid film? The image side does not have the fold-over white edges.
If you decide to do this, make sure you use the correct face of the film. Otherwise nice video.
Fantastic tutorial!
Great job,Bravo !!!
It's wrong to say that Polaroid is gone. Its back..you can buy cameras and film. Fuji has many models out at the moment! But awesome tutorial as always anyway..will try this one!

I tried the link for the polaroid image but link doesn't work. Do you have another link please..Love Love your teaching and videos and EVERYTHING!!!!!!
Nice tip the one with the layer Style of the text, every time I watch videos of yours I go "ohhhh" :D. So thank you for your tuts. Big like.
I have many powers haha u r awesum Aaron...
Nice!
I need this this . This is for my project and i need to get it
***** Great tutorial, I like the handwriting at the bottom.. Makes it that extra personal :)
What I would do extra in this case is: blowing out the highlights just a little bit, decrease contrast, add some diagonal red/orange brush stroke(- add gaussian blur to this - set blending mode at Linear Dodge - decrease opacity), add some blur to the whole image (not the white polaroid holder thingy) and make a reflection with a simple selection and the gradient tool. I think it will make it look more realistic. Haven't try it yet but I'm going to do it right after this comment! What do you think Aaron?
Have you ever heard of Dragan's effect? Could you make a short tutorial about this retouching technique? PS great video as usual.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Hi Aaron,
Could you please let us know how to ad effects in wedding photographs?
You sir are the man
I'd love to see a video of this exact same technique but with a stock photo of polaroids on top of each other to create a collage where only parts of the polaroids are shown underneath.
Haha I watched this video and he said "You cant buy Polaroid Film anymore". And I was like: "Wait what, you can"... A great thing brought back by hipsters :D 2014, so much time has passed. Thanks for the amazing video my friend.
can you make a video on how to make simple pictures look more dramatic. Ex. dodge and burn and lights and darks that would make it look like an editorial photo.
Hi,
Can you make a tutorial for how to make 2D image to 3D?
Thank you.
Off topic, but how do you create a stamp visible video layer? I just started trying to grade and color correct video in Photoshop because I think it has more powerful tools than After Effects and Premiere in that regard, but it's useless without stamp visible. In AE you simply use an adjustment layer to affect everything below, but in PS you actually need a stamp visible of everything below if you want to use a filter such as Camera Raw.
Every time I do the standard stamp visible like you would with a photo, it creates a single frame of your current frame instead of creating a stamp of your entire video.
Does Phlearn sells their merchandise? their t shirts for example?
Thanks u 🙏
how about the see through frame? You know when someone has a picture frame up to their body, but it appears you're seeing through them and it's the background in the frame??
hi, can you put your brush settings for the text please?
HI Aaron, How do I put another photo in a photo...Do you know what I mean? Can you show me how to do this? Thanks!
Please tell me what kind of brush you use to wright? When i wright with the normal brush, it's very thick and when you wright it's thinner in some of the characters
Can I get some help on the Hue/Saturation step? When it opens properties I don't get the color bars.

Can you do this using photoshop elements 10?
It's not true when you say that you can't buy Polaroid anymore... I have a Polaroid 600 that I bought in Paris and I think you should read about the project "Impossible"... Anyway, I'm a big fan
Hue/Saturation is Farbton/Sättigung in German. :)
This looks like the photo is actually on the back of the polaroid.
the link in the description wasnt working here is a working one: www.deviantart.com/art/Polaroid-3262470

In the beginning, you have two images. How do you get the two images in ps like that?

He says it because the branding goes in the back.
Yawn
