Simple cheap whistles, like my several Clarke Sweetones/Celtic are great, there's no doubt about it, but on special occasions @@menagold3 I break out my LIR and Sindt whistles (when I feel like spoiling myself). I think that the basic is to know the scale and the construction of the melody and the harmony, and then - free your mind and your fingers :-)
