    This is a short video informing you of a failed FIREX Smoke Alarm, Model G6.
    There were three units in my friend's house, and all three were 15 years old. Each of them sounded when the Test button was pushed, but they did not activate together. These Alarms were part of interconnected system, which did NOT work. An interconnected smoke alarm system activates EVERY SMOKE ALARM on the circuit when one detector activates. In short, when one alarm activates, ALL OF THEM will sound simultaneously.
    I have also seen this Model of Smoke Alarm not work at all when the button is pushed, So please, check your smoke alarms monthly, vacuum them at least once a year, change your batteries every 12 months, and REPLACE YOUR SMOKE ALARMS AT 10 YEARS OF AGE!!!
    Disclaimer: this video is not telling you that FIREX or Kidde fire safety products are unsafe or unreliable. This video clearly states that AGE is a factor, and these three alarms should have been tested more regularly and replaced in 2008.

    I just removed one of these out of my Aunt’s basement the other day because it was in the water heater room and because I knew that these are really poor quality alarms but what amazed me when I tested it is that it still works. Thanks for the warning on these alarms.

      FYI Just because it sounded, doesn't mean it still works. Only a smoke test would confirm it actually works.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. After a fire in a vacation house I came home to my residence and decided to check the smoke alarms. I'm horrified to find out that our Firex G-6 alarms have a 1990 date code on them! This makes them 26 years old!! Replacing all three of them and also installing extra battery-only alarms in the bedrooms (currently none there). Thanks again.

    Great video Bill I run a dryer vent cleaning & installation company that also replaces smoke alarms. So many of these old firex alarms are still out there and the homeowners response when told they should be replaced is " But our smoke alarms are hardwired" we have even found some where the plug connector is hot when we go to replace it with new alarms.
    It is important that that homeowners change all the alarms at the same time rather than in stages. The monthly test that is encouraged only checks the battery and alarm, it does not confirm the smoke alarm actually detects smoke. We use UL listed smoke spray to test detection and inter-connectivity.
    Also worth noting the old firex connectors and the new kidde ones are not the same, they look very similar but do not latch 100% so the wiring harness should be replaced when the smoke alarms are replaced.

    All you have to do is shut the power off to your current detectors, remove them, change the pigtail adapters, connect the new detectors, and turn the power back on.
    NOTE: when you install the battery, make sure the detector works BEFORE you connect the electric power.

    My dad's new house has three Firex model G-6 smoke alarms that were 12 YEARS PAST their due date. They are painting so they haven't been replaced yet but I'm on it. I DID however, have him replace the basement Alarm. So obviously I wanted to test them. I went upstairs to observe the other alarms, and RIGHT when he hit test on the new one, the main floor G-6 started sounding, but the upstairs one never sounded. After the smoke test was done, the carbon monoxide started, and old G-6 started sounding CO Code. But it was struggling most likely due to it being in pulse instead of code-3 the new ones are photoelectric smoke/co combos.

    The way most interconnected alarms "talk" to each other; there are three wires Hot, Neutral, and an "Interconnect" wire going to each unit. When a unit is activated, it sends a +9 volt signal on the interconnect wire with reference to the neutral wire. Any other unit on the circuit that receives the 9 volt signal will also sound. You can test this if you have an extra wiring harness plug that goes into the back of the alarm; connect the + on a 9v battery to the interconnect terminal and the - to the white neutral wire.
    Note: Older FireX units like the model FX1020 and FXW-1 use a high voltage or 120 volt interconnect signal; they could be identified by having a ORANGE wire for the interconnect terminal.

    I replaced all three because they were all more than 10 years old.
    I would suggest that you use the same Model of Smoke Alarm at all locations.
    It is possible the new one is not compatible with the old ones.
    Just like replacing brake pads on your car, you don't do one side, you do ALL of them together.
    If you have four smoke alarms, replace all four at the same time.

    Hi Bill I’m so glad I came across this video, I to am in Ontario. Seven years ago we had moved a ceiling tile that had a pot light attached, we actually sat it up onto another tile. We had smoke but no fire, we tried to call a non emergency number after using the fire extinguisher on it. Well they sent the fire Marshall to our house who looked at our wired in unit which was the exact model as your friends. I wasn’t aware that they needed to be replaced every 10 years, but he told us that day and I think I was just so caught up in what a mess we had here that i forgot. Fast forward 7 years and we changed the a/c unit this weekend and the one upstairs went off but the lower didn’t. Both are chirping now, my goal for the day was to run to Home Hardware and get a replacement. I am hoping to be able to just clip it back in and not have to re wire anything? Thanks for the tip about the battery though, why wouldn’t the builder ask about smoke alarm preferences with us? So many options and choices about random stuff, why not something so important like a battery back up? Well I’m kicking myself in the butt today for sure changing out a 10 year smoke alarm after 27 years!!! The fire Marshall told me at that time now I’m remembering that if I didn’t change them out after he was already called to the house and warn me that my insurance company could deny any claim related to a fire...... well I’m off to the store thanks fo the video and ill make sure that the 2 are in sync.

    To check whether or not your smoke alarms are inter-connected, you need at least two people; one to press the test button one alarm to activate it, the 2nd person will go to the other alarms one at a time to see if they are sounding.
    Regarding the blinking red lights, you will have to find the Owners Manual or go on the Firex Website to figure that out.

  • @46fd04

    @ Sam Dissana
    Remove the base from the ceiling and install the new base.
    TURN OFF the power to the smoke alarm(s) using the appropriate breaker on your electrical panel.
    Remove the old wiring harness from the electrical wires and install the new detector's wiring harness.
    Black to black, white to white. The red wire is used for an interconnected smoke alarm system; when one detector activates, ALL detectors sound the alarm.

    Go to Home Depot/Lowes/RONA and find an adequate replacement.
    I'd suggest an electric with 9V. battery back-up model.
    I prefer Photoelectric Alarms because they detect slow, smouldering fires quicker than the regular Ionization type detectors.
    All new alarms come with an electric pigtail connector.

  • @46fd04
    @46fd04  11 лет назад +1

    Yes, the building electrical wiring stays intact.
    You will have to change the pigtail that connects to each smoke detector.
    Three wires;
    black & white 120V AC power
    red - used for the interconnection feature, if your smoke alarms are interconnected

Two are "dual sensor" ionization and photoelectric (Kidde Pi2010ca), and the third is also photoelectirc smoke and CO (kidde 900-0213ca). Was easy...swapped out the old picktails with the new ones in the box. 15 min max.

    If all of your alarms were inter-connected (meaning when one alarm activates, ALL of them sound simultaneously), then you MUST install the same model of detector in all locations. i.e. if you have three detectors, then u must install three OF THE SAME model of detector, so they all sound at the same

    Hi,
    Thank you for shearing the information. i was trying to replace my G-6 alarms after 10 years. I requested a smoke detector to mach the existing base & Canadian tire gave me two new detectors. Wire connectors of new Kiddie detectors i bought does not match the G-6 I had. Neither the base. Also those were wired with yellow, black and white (3 wires) and new connector I got come with red, black and white. I wonder whether the wiring is different to what you need for the new one. So, I did not connect the new detectors yet. Can you please let me know whether it is safe to replace the connector with existing yellow wire to red wire of the new connector. Thank you.

It took Waaay to long and then the horn was rather chirping around than beeping. I always test my smoke alarms with test spray because just pressing that button does not guarantee it’s actual functionality. Only of the horn. Alswsys replace your smoke alarms every 10 years. When I looked, the red low battery indicator was flashing. IN a daze, I grabbed a ladder, climbed up there, checked the battery - it was completely fine, not even close to low - replaced it, and the red indicator is still blinking. When I looked at the other 6 FireX detectors, all have a red indicator blinking-all batteries OK. Ideas?

    Mike, a low battery alarm sounds a "chirp" once every 60 seconds, even with electric smoke alarms. I don't know much about the Firex alarms. I would suggest reading the owners manual for more info. If you don't have it, go on their website and see if you can find it. Or look at the label on the alarm, it may tell you what the different alarm sounds indicate. What is the Model #?

    rewired, all smoke alarms can be prone to false alarms. Time specific I've never heard of. Except, one time I had a smoke alarm on the 2nd floor that always went off when the sun shone thru the window at a certain time of day. It only happened on sunny days. I had to relocate it to stop the problem. I live in Durham Region, which is east of Toronto.

I have examined just one and it's a Firex G-6 so I assume that the other two are also Firex G-6 models. The one that I examined has been chirping. It's 27 years old. (The stamp on the back says 90211.) It stops after we shut off its power from the basement circuit breaker. Then it starts chirping again on the next night. I do not see a back-up battery in the detector. Is the next step to buy a new detector? Maybe three new ones?

    I would not do that. Take advantage of the current hard-wired system you have in place now. Purchase photoelectric smoke alarms that are 120V electrically powered, with battery backup. Make sure you purchase the same brand for all smoke alarms (American Sensors or Kidde). DO NOT mix & match because this will cancel out the interconnection feature. Stay away from the Ionization alarms. They are very dangerous in my opinion. They should've been banned many, many years ago.

    Sorry, ran out of space. One specific question - these are the model that's wired in series so supposedly if one goes off, they all go off. I'm not sure if they all went off @ 5 AM this morning - I don't think so, it would have been louder - but maybe. But the fact that the red blinking is on all - does this indicate a system-wide problem rather than a problem with just one? I checked the date and it is 2008, which is when I believe we had these all replaced during a remodel.

Problem is with even the slightest cooking of meat they both sound in unison (they are networked as stated and working correctly in unison) they sound for a longtime, even with my ceiling fan running full speed. • @SWLinPHX

      @@46fd04 Yes, I realized I wrote the wrong number. They are only 29 years old, not 35 as my condo was built in 1995 so that makes sense. They work too well is the problem. But the issue is that it has no hush button or battery backup (I guess back then hardwired didn't need battery backup). But since they are so sensitive and no "hush" button or battery backup, I did just order the 3-in-1 smoke, fire and CO hardwired detectors with non-replaceable (10-year) battery -- just $31.50 each on eBay. But age has not affected their performance. However they are only ionization and I thought getting dual sensors would be best. I think USI is the only manufacturer of dual sensor (smoke + fire) with carbon monoxide as well. I got the hardwired since I already had hardwired and also since that would allow the new ones to be networked. I was about to order the Kidde FireX PI2010 (hardwired, dual sensor but no carbon monoxide). You don't need a carbon monoxide detector if you have absolutely no gas appliances, no attached garage and no power generator do you?

    • @SWLinPHX
      @SWLinPHX Год назад

      ...but I figured both were about the same price and although fixed at 10 years I might as well have carbon monoxide and not have to worry about replacing batteries and the annoying chirping every time -- and the pricier 9V batteries tend to go bad often enough even when a battery tester says they are still "good". Unlike AA and AAA, they need to be pretty fresh in many applications, not just good. I've tested ones that needed replacing in smoke alarms, electronic keypad door locks, wireless microphones, etc. and they all start performing poorly even when 9V still tests in GOOD range.

    I’m in a home I bought 2 yrs. ago. The smoke alarm is beeping, I was told they were replaced, apparently NOT. I’m permanently disabled due to 3 back surgeries and cannot/shouldn’t climb a ladder. My father was Fire Chief in the San Francisco Bay Area, Alameda, Ca. for 40+ years. He’s passed away a few years ago so I can’t ask him.
    I did see a couple were going through the same situation and they called their fire department and explained the situation. They did come to their home an fixed it. I don’t know who to call for help? Please give me an idea to this issue ASAP. Thank you for your video.

    Thank you. Like the last commenter, my G6's are 1990s. I had a false alarm which was not related to anything cooking, so will replace them. Do they need to be the same make as the original or are all "wired" smoke detectors able to work on the same ceiling (or wall) fitting?

    • @galexander9857
      @galexander9857 7 лет назад +2

      No, you can use whatever Model you like. If your units are interconnected (when one activates they ALL activate), then you must use the SAME brand for all locations; e.g. if you want to install a Kidde Alarm, all of them must be Kidde in order for the interconnected circuit to operate. The electrical pigtail that connects to the smoke detectors is easy to change. Make sure you shut the power off to that circuit before changing the wiring. An electrician is not required to do this work.

    I have this exact one and model from 98 and it started going off recently at odd times. Only have one installed in my one level slab house. My plan is to replace it being as old as it is. Can you buy one off the shelf and just plug it into the existing plug or should it be removed and a new one that comes with the newer model be used? Other than the White (Neutral) and Black (Hot) mine has a yellow wire going to the back of the plug-in. After checking it it is closed off and wasn't used so it seems all I need to do is attach black to black, white to white and cap the red one that is on most store models.
    Paul.

    I know it has been a long time since you posted this, but in my condo I have three firex smoke alarms dated 92. One was chirping. I removed all three alarms. I went to Home Depot and bought 3 Kidde alarms, but they look a little bigger and have a plate with the choice of several openings to "fit the one in the ceiling". Can i use these even though they are a different model and do I need an electrician to put them in or can I just put them up? Thanks.

      Susan, if the original alarms had the red wire connected, then they were interconnected.
      To install the new ones, turn the breaker off that powers your alarms, and install all three.
      Electrical wires are: White to white, black to black, and orange/red to orange/red.
      Turn breaker back on, test the alarms.

    I also have the same model of Firex (G6) 1995 with no battery (just wired) and have experienced a persistent chirp every hour or so. I am going to the store to replace them as they are long overdue, but after taking both off (I have 2 units) I am still hearing the same chirping noise and this may sound odd but it seems to be coming from the wiring in the ceiling. I have checked my other alarms and they are in perfect working condition. Could it be the wiring in my house? Please help!

      No. Shut the power off to your smoke alarms, remove the old bracket from the ceiling, remove the old wiring harness (should be connected to the electrical wiring with three marettes), install the new wiring harness and new bracket, and connect & install the new smoke alarm. Takes 15 mins. and not difficult at all. Forget about using adapters.

    I have several Firex smoke alarms within bedroom doors of each other. One keeps beeping, indicating its battery backup is low (even after I put a brand new battery in it.) Home Depot or Lowes
      Buy Kidde or BRK
      Electric with battery backup
      Photoelectric, not Ionization
      You will have to rewire; shut power off to smoke alarm circuit, remove old pigtail, install new pigtail (black/black, white/white, orange/bare copper ground wire), insert pigtail into smoke alarm, test alarm under battery power, then turn the power back on. Check the Smoke Alarms for a solid green light. Test them again to make sure they sound.
