Did anyone get goose bumps when Iris started playing in this video? They put that sequence together really well with talking about how he was stuck in a rut of doubt.....and then boom...Iris.
2:38 funny he should mention being called a sellout by diehards. The music is playing in the background softly, but once the chorus drops it’s just a massive force. Iris is the epitome of power ballads, and it’s something that they’ve always did well in their earlier days. Iris doesn’t really fit in with A Boy Named Goo or Dizzy Up The Girl. It’s their version on a ballad with the orchestra. Can you imagine any other 90s group make Iris the same way? Of course not. Without the hard rocking GGD sound and the poetic influence of John, there could never be another Iris, ever
He crafted a haunting ballad (iris).....it’s funny because that is the most haunting song ever in my entire life. I remember where I was the first time I heard it almost 22 years ago and it’s my favorite love song to this day
The whole time I watched this clip about Johnny having a bad case of writers block, I honestly wanted to give him a hug and tell him everthing was going to be okay. I am just happy Iris was the perfect cure Johnny needed.
Johnny is hands down one of the best song writers of all time. And the Goo Goo Dolls are an underrated band. Been a fan since their first self titled album came out in 1987.
Iris was his gift from God, saying you are right were you should be and I love you and I love who you are, carry on!!! And how blessed we all are from that gift!!!💞💋💞
I write what are known as "case studies" (basically retellings of past and or current events) for a local magazine and I was hit with writer's block when I was tasked with writing a study about the shootings in El Paso and Dayton this past summer (rest in peace to those who lost their lives BTW.) I wrote one paragraph and after that... boom, I was getting nothing else no matter how hard I tried. I took a break after two days of frustration and came across this video; I immediately clicked! I was shocked to learn John had writer's block too and relieved that writing _Iris_ pulled him out of it. Rejuvenated, I went back to my case study and checked the notes I had made over the past couple of days; I ended up putting about 80% of them into the final copy of the study. Within that day, I had the study finished and sent it to the magazine. I was still more anxious about what they would say than I was when I sang _Iris_ at a friend's wedding last year, but when the publisher emailed me saying my study was perfect, I broke out in tears of joy! It felt like a loaded cement truck had been lifted off my shoulders. For those suffering from writer's block, remember what John said from 1:26 to 1:35: *"The ironic thing about writer's block is that you write the whole time, you just think everything sucks."* That's 100% true! Just put something together and even if it sucks, or if you just think it sucks, you'll have completed an idea and you'll be able to move on. John's a hero to me and _Iris_ will forever be in my iTunes library; I heard the song long before my writer's block just so everyone knows.
I read some of his recent interviews, and you can just tell how passionate he is about music and writing lyrics. Rather than act like current music trends don't exist or call them crap, Johnny wants to learn more about it all. Heck - he is intersted in edm, among other styles. Boxes shows how far he's come, and getting even better.
You will realize the struggle of musicians here, they too also go thru that win or go home situation and there's no option but to deliver. My fave band of all time! #GGD
The line "You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be" reminds me so much of how real the love between my boyfriend and I is. It always gives me goosebumps.
Every time I watch this I get mad because there's this new prevailing idea that Mike wasn't really a part of the band and the dolls was just Robbie and Johnny. Hogwash. They're just saying that now because things fell out. Without Mike it's not the same.
NOOOOOOO they have just become a fav band of mine and i saw that his full episode of behind the music was online this morning. Now I've come home to watch it and it's been removed literally WHYYYYYY did it get removed whoever has this In full can you please please reload it up again
I tried posting it but it got blocked as well. I do have it on my drive I’ll send you a link drive.google.com/file/d/1W7QeJwlWhumUUUtd7R1dcYsaLFP7j6IX/view?usp=sharing See if that works
Its funny cause Dude is one of the best song writers of all time.
He is THE BEST lyrical song writer

To me IRIS and UNINVITED !
the story makes the song so much better and the guitar tuning so creative
This is hands down my favorite song of all time. Listen to it at least once a day.
Yes me too! What's your reason
Same, such an incredible song, it's truly wonderful and touching in a way I can't even put into words. Beautiful

The whole time I watched this clip about Johnny having a bad case of writers block, I honestly wanted to give him a hug and tell him everthing was going to be okay. I am just happy Iris was the perfect cure Johnny needed.

Loving the Karen hairdo. When you write songs like Iris, you can wear whatever hairstyle you want.

this has given me something to think about. For a lot of things. Not just songwriting, but life, you know? Makes you think.

My dad's from Buffalo...every time I go see my family there I blast Goo Goo dolls and this song
you will always be the best band
Iris was worth the wait. This song is beyond words, it's a ballad of feelings...
I know what John's talking about with Writer's Block when trying to write a good story as a filmmaker. I know the feeling.
I keep coming back to my fave song story.
Iris sat at #1 for 18 weeks
John Rzenik is awesome hands down no matter what
"What good would wings be if you couldn't feel the wind on your face."
Every time I watch this I get mad because there's this new prevailing idea that Mike wasn't really a part of the band and the dolls was just Robbie and Johnny. Hogwash. They're just saying that now because things fell out. Without Mike it's not the same.

Thankyou for this song
The goos have so much more talent than a lot of the famous bands out there.
Amazing song
2:34 lol, Rzeznik reflecting on the band's roots
No going back to the garage at that point. Changed the course of their sound from that point on.
