It’s on sight with Ethel
So I started Eldritch blasting.
I let her live the first play through. Until I realized exactly what she was, what she did to people and especially how they made other hags.
For real! I don't care how evil I am that bit GOTTA GO!
Paladins: So anyway I started Smitin'!
@@americancapitalist9094wait how
If the 3k gold didn't tip you off, Idk what to tell you
Yeah 3k gold to kill one random girl
I remember being called petal. But that might have been after I said no.
Youre pretty regularly are getting 1K gold rewards at this point, I thought it was a hint that the child was sold away or something so when she suddenly turned into a hag I was actually surprised
I got 6000 gold for being a rogue, poor kid doesn't have a mum anymore.
Fun fact if you speak with the dead woman in Ethel's basement ont act 1 she tell you Ethel did the same thing to her.
Nah Ethel gets these hands every. Single. Time.
That and the loot you get is worth it and the moral victory.
She was so nice to my Durge, kudos to the VA for nearly making me forget about the literal dungeon under her hut.
I have Ethel in my inventory. I am waiting to see what happens in the third act.
@@MelanieGVFupdate us when whatever happenes happenes😂
Who else did the final fight with just the main four and kinda forgot about the backup and all the potions and scrolls you’ve acquired
I summoned the city guard once, and they all immediately died. So I reloaded the save and didn’t use any backup for the rest of the fight
I summoned Zevlor squad and eventually the scene in which you go up the brain pop up . After that I summon him again for the final fight and they were hostile to me....😮

@@matthewcolosi7606Cannon fodder same as the Harpies
I only summon Mizora and Yurgir if I can persuade him.
Conversely. You can inspect the captain and she just has auntie ethels passives. All the drunk men on the second floor also have red cap passives and their race is listed as fey.
FR + Captain Grisly's subtitle is literally "Sister of the Seeing Pearl".
I inspected the people on the second floor bc I was wondering how a Lv. 4 had 85 HP????
I was skeptical but then I saw the house has 2 bed and toys
Larian really did a good job making this game
I almost fell for it, but I read her mailbox
I never noticed that or the mailbox... But the feet and hands in the net above the bartender... And then just started to ask questions and... PUF! There she was, Ethel again.
At first a thought that Captain is a good person. Than I saw her buff under health bar....
What buff?
@@manuelmenendez8239Fey life
@@manuelmenendez8239I assume Fey Ancestry.
I figured that the Captain was the hag after I tried to pickpocket her and saw a couple items from Act 1…😂
Well, the real Captain is a kinda swell person, SPOILER
She was kidnapped and mind controlled masked as one of Ethel`s guards in her new lair, rekting Ethel without killing the captain frees her from the mind control.
The whole quest line, essentially involves gaslighting someone that they didn’t have a child. And the hag just wants to be a mom
Pretty much
I don't know if I can trust the fact the hag wants to be a mom.......... especially since she's probably going to turn the child into a hag
She wants to eat a child to have a child, which uh... No thank you.
True, althouth at the cost of eating the child so it transforms in her insides.
...whaaatttt!!!!!!?????? This game is WEIRD@@kailevil3444
Recruiting Ethel aside, for me the moment everything fell into place was when I actually visited her home, and saw the children's toys everywhere. This woman doesn't give crazy vibes, she gives desperate vibes. Someone is clearly manipulating the guard when she tries tonget their help. My immediate assumption was Bhaal cultists, but my belief she was genuine paid off.
Me it was the fist lady acting really weird
what tipped me off about this was the fact that the whole quest line was started by meeting with Mayreina and a handful of other hag victims and when meeting the captain and telling her you refuse to kill a woman who is still at this point in the investigation classified as a victim and not a deranged knife murderer... Ethel just reveals herself... i mean... seriously! Ethel c'mon! at least make it a challenge!
nah there are other ways to trigger it. For me it was me overhearing her talking to the guards in the barracks and they being no help at all. Then after speaking to her the quest started. It just mended with Mayrina bit later on and then it all made sense.
Nope I triggered it without even knowing about the hag fighter ppl. I couldn't figure out how to save the kid, then I found out I could go to them and get the potion thing
The sword and amulets you get for defeating her are too good to pass up. One of the amulets gives a free cast (refreshes on long rest) of gaseous form and 3 casts (refreshes on short rest) of gust of wind, the sword gives you an additional reaction per turn (afaik the only thing in the game that gives an extra reaction), and the other amulet gives advantage on int, wis, and cha saves. Plus, if you’re a wild magic sorcerer, the ring that Ethel herself drops is pretty good too
You get that stuff either way you do this quest I believe
@@darrienjones8917 You get the sword as a quest reward from the mother looking for her kid, so you might be locked out of it if you kill her.
Unless she's carrying it on her person, which I doubt.
For real that repair carried my lore bard having 2 cutting words a turn made it almost impossible to hit us since everyone's AC was over 20
@@HungryLoki Well I remember getting both and I never killed her.
The Ring Ethel drops also gives an UNLISTED bonus +1 to Spell Save DC. No other Ring does this, making it good for anyone really!
The writing in this game is so good. I'm constantly impressed by how many paths and options they worked in.
Also, as a mother, this quest was painfully obvious for me. Besides the whole bringing her daughter to a bar and drinking herself stupid part, Lora was acting like a good mother in how she went about searching for her. Made her much more believable to me than the liars in this quest.
I knew something was up because i got the insight check that the guard had been charmed to forget and ignore her
Yea i also got it but i assumed that it was due to Cazador ritual shinenigans
A lot of players can miss Ethel in the beginning. I missed her as a vendor but killed her in her hut. I knew immediately how evil Hags were and how they can manipulate people so I sided with the mom instantly.
Will be fun to just let Ethel win in an evil playthrough
I sided with her on my first playthrough and it's really not worth it. Her affect might be the weakest of all the ones I've seen.
Even and evil playthrough wants to screw her over as much as possible.
cuz the best possible result with the best reward is letting her live (not that you have a choice since she doesn't even die when you killer her) in chapter 1 but intimidating her into leaving behind Mayrina and the stat boost item.
Then you kill her and take her stuff, because if you follow the mayrina plot in the city one of her minions attacks you. So she's personally tried to kill you so, as an evil bastard, you murder her face and steal her loot.
She's one of the few beings in the game where the good route AND evil route theoretically should result in the same thing.
The only exception is if you can't make that chapter 1 intimidate check.
that's a big advantage for my Durge playthrough, thanks for showing it
What tipped me off was the fact the quest made you look for a captain "Grisly", but the person you talk to is "Grizly" (or the other way around). The real captain is already dead and was replaced by the hag who perhaps forgot how to spell her victims name
Slight spoilers
The Captain lives, you can save her if you manage to beat Ethel a second time in her secret lair in Baldur's Gate. She's very thankful for it.
@@otakon17I believe the dispel good and evil spell breaks it as well
The real Captain isn't dead, she's got a whispering mask on. If you kill Ethel without killing the Captain in the boss fight, you can talk to Grisly and she will thank you!
The captain isn't dead
They aren’t dead though?
Don't side with the hag unless your evil you get a legendary sword for saving her in my opinion its a far better reward
Edit: iv had great joy coming back to this and watching people argue 😂

If the fact that all the patrons in the bar look off and all of them feel like they're forgetting something, didn't tell you there was more to this than just an old bar, idk what to tell you.
You've clearly never visited my local...
"If the fact that all the drunk people are acting like drunk people wasn't a hint..."
Uuuuuuuhhhhhh...
No, it's really not...
If you miss the group of hag survivors, and the flyers around town talking about them it might be hard to tell what to do. Otherwise they kinda point you here and let ya know what's up. Was hilarious seeing mayrina as a sheep aas well 🤣
I actually found a letter in lora's postbox on my first playthrough from her old pirate buddies that confirmed vanra was real so didn't believe captain grisly, then she turned into ethel, luckily I already had the hags bane potion 😁
See this would have been a mystery for me, But she still had charisma drain on her from my first fight with her so the second I saw "Captain Grisly" I was immediately suspicious and examined her, Seeing a set of very familiar looking abilities.
I got ethel as an ally because the steelwatchers and flaming fist would kill on sight since i killed gortash at the coronation so when i went to talk to her, all the flaming fist and her decided to kill me. So I ended up getting a unique dialogue with ethel talking about how i killed the mother without even having to be told to
I love seeing these. There's no way I would play in such a way as to end up seeing stuff like this, so I love seeing the existance of it.
Definitely one of my favourite quests for just how hard it can be to get to the bottom of things and how many ways you can go through it ❤
Is this the Hag you can kill in act one? The name Ethel sets off my memory
yes
@@RosettePosette so what happens if you kill her in act one?
@@nighthunter3039 She is immortal until you get some information in Act 3 about her way to never die. After that you gain information how to kill her finally
I knew something was off when I talked to the captain when her health was 120.
The captain wanting me to kill a grieving mother was a huge clue that she wasn't the one I should be trusting.
When I first met the captain, something about her voice immediately jumped out at me as familiar. I thought maybe she and Ethel just had the same VA, but the reveal was great!
If you save Mayrina and give her her husband's wand, she tells you how to save the child.
You don’t need to give her the wand
The quest was confusing for me for a different reason since i found the real captain underground first before i talked with the fake one upstair XD
“It’s really hard to tell who to believe”
Didn't talk to the mom, I explored and found the dungeon, saw one of the npc that had a mask one was the captain, went back up stairs to pick a fight!
They really need to add more rewards for evil playthroughs. Having a summon for only 2 major fights is underwhelming compared to the most OP rapier in the game for duelist.
It wouldn’t be realistic 😂 evil give u money and power but very rarely friends. Or the backstabbing kind like Orin 😂
@@kazuzart1582 The whole draw of being evil is personal gain over morality. Giving the good playthrough all the good rewards and more content just punishes you for trying to play an evil playthrough.
@@kazuzart1582 Remind me who runs all of the governments of the world? Is it nice people?
@@Patrick-md3leidk I mean in my evil playthrough my party was probably the strongest it has ever been. I was evil Durge wizard, with ascended Astarion and Dark Justiciar SH. If I wanted something we either stole it or killed whoever we needed to to take it. Also Astarion (or any assassin rogue) with Durge’s deathstalker mantle cloak is absolutely busted. Basically get free sneak attacks.
@@Patrick-md3lemost of the evil decisions are much more rewarding than the good decisions. Specifically Durge Slayer form and Ascended Astarion, but also stuff like Minthara having Absolute’s Branding as a bonus action and getting Shar’s forces as a summon against the Absolute if you side with Shar for Shadowheart.
One person outside of the tavern was the only one to say she has seen a child taken. Thats the only thing that led me to believe something was up
After realizing the shapeshifter nonsense, I started inspecting every npc related to quests, so Ethel’s disguise immediately faltered when I found the hidden redcaps.
After the first time I got tricked by the hag I learned to always listen to the villagers
Honestly, the rewards for saving the child are way better than ethels aid.
That rapier was the perfect weapon for my college of swords bard and made him an almost completely melee bard with lots of debuffs for his enemies
"Spoilers for [quest name here]."
See look how easy that was. Pretty bloody easy right?
"It's really hard to tell who to believe"
Bruh
Tbf at that point in act 3, any npc with more than 2 lines of dialogue is a possible doppelganger, ethel or not😂
i didn’t even know that captain grizzly was a hag, i just threw a piece of furniture at her for calling my character something 😭
Duelist perogative is too good
It didn’t really surprise me when the surrounding people in the mermaid that had weapons had hag based boosts under their health bars
It would be if the guard she is talking to wasnt getting their mind erased mid conversation
I pushed her off the cliff into the water when I fought her in act1. Haha
Holy crap that armor is SICK, I want it
The arcana check on the the flaming fist convinced me that the mother was telling the truth
Me and my group didn't even know this was a questline. We were looking for more murder victims and went into the blushing mermaid's basement, figured out Ethel was involved, and then caused her to puke up the kid and killed Ethel. I had no idea her Mom was looking for her.
Ethel is my favorite character, so I was so excited to find out you could ally with her during my last durge playthrough.
I have a bug on this quest. While trying to stop the bhaal murder, I walk NEAR the tavern, just around it. But for some reason makes the hag become hostile. Never talked to the mother or anything. I was confused, why a pirate captain was hostile to me, bit went and almost killed her, revealed that was the green hag and about the kid. Loaded last save, did the same thing, defeated her qithout killingher , open belly and get the kid out
I went back and saw the empty bed at the mother's house and instantly new something was up.
This made me so confused on who to trust. When Laura is talking to the flaming fist who seems to be possed or somthing i was so confused "wtf is going on?"
Sorry ethel. That Rapier from the mother is too good to miss.
Notice how the captain has 1 eye, she is also doing something that would benefit auntie Ethel, who takes eyes as payment
I inspected the drunkards around the the pub and they had passives of the lil sheep gnomes from bog
I've done exactly that...but she never showed up for the final battle 😢
Ohh I guess i won’t have this npc… she got dusted when that mean girl in the cage was yelling at me
she is actually amazing for help.
SPOLER
you can ignore the last fight with the dragon by making your party invisible and entering the portal. Hag invisibility is not revealed (was not for me anyways)
It really is hard to tell who to believe IF you ignore all the red banners that you pass along the way.
Yeah, I had a library worth of scrolls, and a shop worth of potions. In RPG's I never use consumables, because I always think: 'these might come in handy later'...
Did summon Mizora and Aylin. The first one held the dragon, the later was good as a damage sponge.
The captain has one of those masks on underneath the bar. I didnt know it was her until Inlooted her corpse but I wonder if you can sneak and steal the mask to save the captain?
Don't know about stealing the mask, but you can save the captain by killing Ethel.
When you go to her house, you can see a cot meant for a kid among othet things
Saving the child is way better since her mother gives you a Legendary weapon in return that SLAPS HARD!
I found the hag’s lair and fought the captain among the other masked people before I even found auntie Ethel disguised as the captain. I was like “are you aware there is a hag’s lair in your basement?” And she got mad and transformed back into a hag lol
I accidentally found the hag's lair below the Blushing Mermaid before I found Laura or even learned of her child, kinda ruined the magic of this quest for me because I KNEW she wasnt lying xD
Ethel she can catch these hands no pity no mercy as a father I will never forgive that monster
Non of the final find "helpers" do much even the owel bear. Orpheus also saved my honor run, but he's more of a story option than a helper.
Everybody is a shape shifter in act 3
I skipped this entire quest line somehow by finding the hag before meeting anyone else, killing her, then finding the hag meeting where everyone thanks me for finding the hag. Never knew anything about a mom and her kid. After killing Ethel, I came out into the blushing mermaid where an attack has apparently happened without me being there and the proprietress is gone and never knew why or what that was all about...
First time I did this I had completely missed the hag support group. I pressed grisly one more time before I left just to make sure and i was *not* ready for what came next
And that invisibility buff during that fight is pretty damn useful
If you rescue kid you got really nice legendary sword from mum ⚔️
I got 6k gold for this, I got played like a fiddle and just accepted it
My original theory was that someone (possibly Ethel) enchanted Lora to believe she had a child when she really didn’t. And of course that was wrong…
I believe the power of inspect.
Or if you succeed a skill check with the fist who had their memory messed with, or even just seeing how weird she’s acting you immediately know the woman is the one to believe.
It's a Hag. Trickery is par for the course.
Its sadly a good boon too im pretty sure it turns your whole party invisible, i did it on my evil run
Oh so this is assuming Ethel survives me in the swamp?
For those wondering; calling her during the final battle casts major invisbility on 5 (I think?) characters.
In other words: Its not worth it lmao
@@elseggs6504 Eh. If we exclude roleplay, that largely depends on your characters builds. Duelist's prerogative is real good for sure, but it might not fit any of your characters.
As for the battle, I wouldn't say it's worthless at all, it's quite good during fight atop the brain, especially if you wanna sneak a character up to the mindflayers to start killing them, or if you have like, a sorcerer with twinned haste on and don't wanna rsk the concentration checks, or a rogue that relies on sneak attack.
Remember that major invisibilty doesn't break when casting/attacking, it triggers a check and if you beat it, you stay invisible.
So in the end, actually, it's probably worth it, since you get 3k gold and a really powerful effect for the last battle, which is arguably the only thing that matters, with how much ressources you get in act 3.
But yeah personnaly I took it once during an evil playthrough and probably won't do it again.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the weapon does grant you another reaction, which is probably worth it in some cases? Like, giving that to a mage to maybe counterspell twice, or even counterspell plus shield.
@@Naelhinnthe extra reaction is worth it because the weapon lets you add decent necrotic damage on hit for a reaction. So even if you don't have any other reactions to use, any martial class with extra attacks can get crazy damage
you can also start this quest through the hag survivors, which is led by mayrina if you saved her
Ah... yes, I didn't believe Grisly, BUT only because I accidentally discovered her secret lair first :D :D :D and than I juust knew
I wanted to check her class and it said she was a human with "fey ancestry". I just started squinting at her after that
There's a letter in Lora's mailbox that asks how her little one is doing. I thought that was a great detail to find if you're looking for more info on who is telling the truth.
Wait it’s not hard to tell who’s lying tho?😅 the narrator tells you that something magical is affecting the guards memory 😭
Screw the bag that legendary rapier I get from mom is really great for my build
I didn't trust the patrons at the bar because when I first met Laura talking to the guards, something kept making the guard forget what she was talking about...
"Hard to tell who's telling the truth" lol wut. It was plainly obvious.
i never found the quest giver i just happened to wander in the blushing mermaid basement cause i’m nosy, it was probably the worst way to complete this quest lol
Ah crap we killed her in my good play through 😅😂
I got suspicious by just everything in this quest so I decided to do what I always do. Being a bloodthirsty hero and attack first and ask questions later. So I attacked the Ethel unknown that it was her. The funny part was I silenced her first so I had no idea what was going on
I legit thought the mom was lying, didn't even question it, killed the mom, found the group against the hags after making the deal with Ethel, and just... never finished the last "confront auntie ethel" mission, she was completely useless in the final fight 😮💨
Even on an Evil run, Ethel must always die.
That armor though...
I went to that woman's house and saw kids toys. That's how I knew she was telling the truth
Love Ethel ❤❤❤
Shes my favorite character.
ngl I had no idea Grisly was masked until I actually went to the lair and found her lmao but yeah if you find Lora talking to Portyr then do the Anti Hag group Mayrina thing things make a lot more sense and you can save Vanra
i’m doing an evil durge run so definitely gonna do this!
Whether I'm evil or good, I will always play Ethel like a fiddle. Take the benefit, and take her down.
I was wondering if she was a potential ally, but I never got myself to ignore the letters in Lora's inbox, the contents of her home or the obvious manipulation of everyone involved with this quest. Plus, it's just fun to kill of characters like Ethel.
