  • Carquestions wants to know how a modern day vehicle like the Jeep GC can win 29 Industry awards, be reviewed by Edmunds.com, Detroit News and everyone else under the sun without any of them mentioning this vehicle lacks the basic ability to warn the driver in the event of a major electrical system malfunction. Is this another example of "decontenting"? Thousands of people designed and built it, hundreds more reviewed it - just a simple mistake or just another example of pulling the wool over your eyes?

    Wow, hard to believe they didn't put in a battery, charging monitor.
    Wonder when the recall will be coming to fix this?

    Just took mine to the dealership today for the same thing. Dead alternator and I assume dead battery, glad it was just a case of "no crank no start" after I parked instead of it dying on the road. These WK2 are good looking vehicles, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired

    @KXKKX - it was fully charged 12.8 - If your thinking when the voltage gets low enough a battery light will come on it won't - there is no symbol in the dash to light up that I can see and if there was by FMVSS standards it would have a bulb check when the key is turned to "on". You can see from the video there is no bulb check for the battery.

    I got a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK.This just happened to me today, First thing I noticed was the car started loosing power , not cold air, all warning lights started to show up, then I quickly moved to the right lane and enter to Home Depot. Mi car stopped at the middle entrance of the parking lot and battery completely dead so had to cancel my trip and return home. I never saw this coming mi car was just fine a minute before

  • @1001Hobbies

    @Plague02 Without the alternator being driven the electrical system is not receiving 13.5 - 14 volts of charge. The battery, running the engine by itself, will lose voltage output and a charging system light is supposed to appear to let you know there is a fault in the charging system. There is no excuse for the condition Mark found.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 13 лет назад +2

    Can you do a followup video after running the car for a few minutes with A/C and lights on to drain the battery? I agree with you, an idiot light at least would be helpful. Of course in this scenario the cause is obvious, but other situations might be less clear. Sitting in the drivers seat I want as much info as I can, without needing a scan tool at the roadside.

    Regular car wash over here, after that the battery light came on. Next time i turned the car on, the light stayed off. Multimeter shows it is not charging, and it smells like burnt electric wiring. My alternator is done for good. There was a recall on those alternators, ...

    @CompCrasher86 The belt was removed for testing and the vehicle won't suffer any ill affects if it is done cold and run for less than 5 minutes or so. Your thermostat does the same thing every time you start your car from cold - no coolant circulation until 195 degrees on most cars. I'm a mechanic and did it to prove a point about the battery light - I'm not suggesting you try it

    GM did something similar to the final Grand Ams and Aleros. The cruise control dash LED is missing and even if you soldered a new LED in its place it will not light during the initial turn on check or when cruise control is on. With no cancel button and a very hard to see and quite dim light cruise control enabled/on button LED on the GA it is possible to have cruise control engaged and not know it and having to hit the brakes to disengage the cruise control. And this happened in mid MY '03.

    @carquestions Please show me the statue. Also, realize that this is a shared display. If one of the items lights up, the display is working. Also, it might not show up when the battery is near dead, but when it gets below a certain charge. If you aren't testing a low battery scenario, you can't say that light isn't there.

    I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee and while it has a volt gauge, it also has a Check Gauges light that will illuminate if the battery voltage falls below 11-10ish volts I think? I would imagine this Jeep probably also has a light that will kick if the battery gets down that low. Must just be that an interface was not added to allow the instrument cluster to distinguish if the vehicle is on or off and rather will not trigger the light until the battery reaches a critical level.

    I changed my alternator once and it wouldn't charge at all same thing dash lights came on so the dealer said the pcm is not responsive to the alternator. Which is an expensive fix for another pcm crazy. So i did it a rather cheap way i just put a voltage regulator in it so it wouldn't rely on the pcm and it worked. . . The dealers try say you cant bypass your pcm you can. Instead of buying expensive parts that cost an arm and leg FFS

    @res340 Any bare metal ground under the hood is fine - as far as the warning light goes it does have one - I've seen it come on once when using the remote start - but it won't come on when normally started or if the belt falls off. NHTSA is the one to complain to - seems no one checks to see if the car is built to spec - so much for safety standards.

    My husbands and I purchased a New 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in May of 2011 and with in the 1st two months the alternator went bad as I was driving the PIC went hay wire all instrument lights on the panels we're flashing but NOTE only the lights that flash were the one used when starting the car using the remote start the dealer ship told me they reset every thing and sent me on my way, no really feel comfortable with that, but what else can u do 2 day later the same thing happened this time they said it was the alternator and they had none in stock because the car was to new go figure that,I totally had it at that point and they amazingly found on the Atlanta GA and were overnighting it.

    My 2014 did this on me the other day after a long drive, no warning and suddenly within 1-2 minutes all electronic systems died (incl ABS and steering) and the battery didn't even have enough juice to shift gear so the car was stuck on the side of the road. Had to tow it and after jump starting it I saw the low voltage warning, seems to only show when the battery is almost completely drained (so no warning at all from what I assume is a dead alternator)

  • @killman1971
    @killman1971 13 лет назад

    Maybe the driver info center will throw a warning if the voltage gets too low? The PCM should have a battery voltage and know if the alternator is not charging.
    Since you are in Canada (Ontario IIRC) maybe the dash gauges were messed up during printing or the instrument cluster computer was not programmed correctly?

  • @Plague02
    @Plague02 13 лет назад

    @carquestions The EVIC is an display that can show many symbols. Not seeing it there doesn't mean that it won't turn on with a low battery. Why do you think it won't show when the battery gets low? Also, what happens if you turn the ignition to the on position without starting the car.

  • @carquestions
    @carquestions  13 лет назад

    @Plague02 As seen in the video when turned to "on" there is no light as required by law - this is a problem. What good would the light be if it only turned on when the battery was near dead ? - you need a warning

    @AsianTvchingchong I think you missed the video - Yes Chrysler says there is a light they say so in the manual - problem is, and the video shows it, by law it is supposed to turn on at start or if there is a charging system failure and it doesn't turn on. Do you have a picture of one actually working? Saying there is alight is one thing - showing it is another.

    The indicator is in the evic display at the bottom in the red area it dose come on right at start it is multi function so you won't see the battery it will just look like a bunch of little squares. Check the book. The battery is probably do new that is was able to maintain voltage for that amount of time. The quality of the new jeep is very poor in my opinion and I was a jeep lover. The previous model (wk)was a worse.

    I own a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and just last week Friday in the arvo the battery charging sign popped up. I continued on the motorway to pick my husband up from work and than on the way home it just completely died out. Like it just totally switched off, would not turn on for even myself to put the windows up as they were all down. I’m flabbergasted to be quite honest. We just bought the car in July this year. So I was wondering, a suggestion from you would be very much appreciated before I take it in to the mechanics. And also do I take my Jeep to see a certified Jeep/dodge specialist or can I pop it into any mechanical store?

I ended up trading-in due to the "deal" the dealer gave me to not require them to replace the computer since they were at fault (they replaced the alternator a second time and didn't check to see if it was working properly - or half checked). They gave me full value for the 2013 and gave me a credit towards a newer Jeep for what the computer would have cost me. I upgraded to a 2016 then bought a 2021 last October. Love it!!

That day we replaced it the truck worked fine all day it satrted right away until the next day it did the same thing it takes forever to start it makes all kind of wierd noises when trying to start it and after a while it starts. Do you know what could be the problem with my jeep?? Thanks

      I have had my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee for 9 years. I bought it used in 2013 with 205K + miles. Something has been draining the battery for years. We finally got a new battery....waited because when checked they would tell us it was good. Not long after, the battery started draining again. I would crank it every few days in hope's to keep it going. It did not drain for a long while, but now it is turning over but not cranking. I stoo after a few seconds, wait a few seconds and try again. Cranks on second it third try. New battery installed and it's still doing it. So, why now is iy lagging in starting?? I'm fed up, but otherwise, I have loved driving it and the way it handles.

      @@jodicubbler761 These vehicles have a TIPM system. A circuit board with relays for important things like the fuel pump. Over time the relay can stick (fuel pump never shuts off) or not work at all. In old cars you would pull the relay and replace. These vehicles you need to replace the TIPM or repair it with a soldering iron to remove and replace the fuel pump relay.

    This shit just happened to me yesterday at Lowes when I left my wife and 2 year old in my 2014 GC running. I come back to the car and frog brains is sitting there with my son roasting to death in the 100 degree heat. There was absolutely no warning anything was wrong and I'm still not 100% sure what happened. At first I thought it was the alternator because it cut off while the car was running and then the power went out but after getting towed home ( $125) I charged the battery and everything looks good when measuring with a multimeter. I wish I had measured before I cleaned the battery terminals so I could know for sure it wasn't the tiny bit of corrosion on there I cleaned or the loose cable I tightened up. If it was that, wouldn't the alternator keep the car running at idle? I'm thinking it had to be that or the belt which I've never replaced and I bought it used almost 4 years ago. The belt wasn't making any noise or giving me any symptoms though. I checked and it's spinning the alternator. Is it common for them to be bad and slip over the alternator without making noise long enough to drain the battery and then begin working again?

    • @carquestions
      @carquestions  2 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear TJ - yes some cars will run on alternator some won't - and yes alternators can go bad and still spin fine. -

  • @JameyCampbell_54

    You know when your belt comes off and if you don’t notice or know the signs of the belt coming off then I blame your father.. lol
    Your AC is going to stop blowing cold (compressor not spinning) you lose power steering (unless it’s a vehicle with electric motor assisted steering instead of belt driven pump, and you hear a belt come off or break “usually” Bc it’ll get wrapped up on the harmonic balancer or get into the electric fans... makes all kinds of noise.

Don't believe the hype about the big 3/joke . Their only intention is to herd everyone like sheep into buying into their bullshit their product is REALLLY REALLY GOOD or "oh we offer such a good product now" dance. Like I said before PIPE DREAM . MY TUNDRA is hands down the best I ever driven even at 11 years old it's been super reliable . Not like the big hunk a shit we sell here . I also have an 2005 fx4 and guess what ? It too is a hunk of shit . Cab corners rotted out been through two fuel driver modules , a broken spark plug cause the Genuis at Ford wanted to use a really long spark splug? It still runs but nothing holds up in the body it a pile of rust and I also noticed it's a hazard to drive cause the Main mounts that hold the body to the chassis is starting to rotting from the salt in the midwest.
