TAR meaning a sailor is not something used only in cryptic crosswords. It's just an old-fashioned informal word for a sailor - common enough to be in the Concise Oxford Dictionary. There are a few meanings used in cryptic crosswords and never in normal English, but not that many. One is "flower" meaning a river because it's something that flows, and another is using "the French" to mean "French for 'the'".

Sure! "Headless" is a deletion indicator so take off the first letter. Another word for "chickens" is FOWLS. If you take off the first letter, you get OWLS, which are wise birds. Hope that helps!! 😊
