Actually, this is a reference (however poorly approached) to Maxwell's Equations. A few of them are, but yeah, they're mostly just "if boss fights went wrong in arbitrary ways" with a few cases of "if Sonic's spindash was eight times more powerful."

Yeah, a lot of Eggman's fails were Wile E Coyote-esque, where the universe conspires against him to make him fail in unpredictable ways
