- I'm really excited to finally bring you episode one of my epic astro road trip through Tasmania. In this video we shoot some amazing stars over Cradle Mountain.
This location is notoriously difficult to shoot at night, and I certainly did have some challenge .. but it was worth every minute of the time I spent there.

Get home from a long week of work on a Friday night (here in the southeastern US) turn on the television and open the RUclips app and a new Nightscape Images video is ready for my viewing pleasure …..life is good. 😬👍🏼
Haha, well I'm pleased to give you some viewing pleasure David. Thanks as always for your support.
Perfectly surreal.
Thanks so much for watching Leon.
Another outstanding video Richard! That image of the Milky Way over the boat shed is stupendous! You must have been tired that night. Doing some quick math, the total time your shutter was open for the images you used in this video was almost an hour plus the images you didn’t use plus getting set up, take down and filming for us! The Tasmanian Tourist Board owes you some rum balls at a minimum! Cheers!
Haha, yes I could not find any Rum Balls in Tasmania at all ..!!!!
Ahhh that boatshed pano was absolutely beautiful. On the bucket list for sure. Thank you
Thanks so much for watching.
Another great adventure under the night sky, can't wait for the next installment. Glad the clouds parted to get your images.
Thanks Brett. Yes it was great when the clouds rolled away for a while.
Hello Mr Richard, it is a spectacular video along with all its fantastic and beautiful catches, especially one that the milky way has airglow 😍 Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful landscapes.👍👍👍
You're very welcome indeed Javier my friend.
Your images are always a feast for the eyes. So jealous of your beautiful southern skies. Milky way isn't the same from light polluted UK
Thanks again for watching Alan. Yes we certainly do have a delightful view of it all down here.
You put so much effort into each video! Amazing dedication to the hobby.
I'm pleased you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Richard. Simply unbelievable. You are a magician & an artist!
I really appreciate your comments Manjul
Awesome night images all around. Enjoy it very much this video..
Thank you for watching Luis.
Love these roadtrip videos. Hard to pick a favorite image but I do love the different angle on the boathouse. Awesome as always thanks Richard.
Really appreciate you watching Mark.
Sheffield great town, the Blacksmith Cafe has great food. Cradle mt is a must-see .
A nice collection of photos,I enjoy your trips. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for looking Phillip. I love Sheffield .. a beautiful little country town with an amazing view of the mountain.
Fabulous Richard. I love watching your adventures, and listening to you explain what you are doing and then seeing the end result - just wonderful. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Thank you so much Julie .. I have quite a few to come from Tassie.
Great you are back in Tassy Richard. Wonderful photos, we have some amazing scenery here so glad you are staying two weeks and looking forward to more great photography. Hope the weather is kind to you.
Thanks a lot Liz. The weather was fine for a while but deteriorated at the end.

Love your adventures and as usual your images are stunning, so much detail. My personal favourite is the pano over the boat shed. Thanks Richard.
I really appreciate that David, thank you.
Congratulations Richard on reaching 70K plus subscribers. Well deserved. And thank you for sharing these amazing adventures with us.
You're very welcome John. Appreciate you watching.
Wow!! Fantastic images!! Looking forward to the next episode in Tasmania!
Thanks as always for tuning in Gary.
Fantastic, looking forward to the series
Thanks so much Jeremy.
Wow, you'd have to be chuffed with those Richard! Tassie is just so stunning! Can't say I'm impressed to see the visitor centre emitting so much light in the middle of a bortle 1 wilderness area mind you 🤔.
Thanks as always for your kind words Dominic. Yes Tassie is so awesome for photography. I noticed the visitors centre lights were off when I went back to the car later so I assume they're on a timer.
What an amazing place to visit, and you ended up pulling out some amazing shots. I can't wait to see where else this trip takes you. I especially enjoyed the second to last image, with the scrub tree to the right and the galactic core right down the middle, absolutely brilliant. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate your comments.
I enjoy seeing you travelling and taking great pictures of thist fantastic location! Thanks for sharing!
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Sven.
Awesome images Richard, especially the panorama over the lake !
Thanks for watching Stephen, really appreciate it.
Back in Tassie, you beauty. So many great sights above and below. Loved it, looking forward to the next video. Cheers
Thanks again for watching Greg, really appreciate it.
So beautiful, thank you.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Wow Richard, those pano's are absolutely stunning.
Thanks heaps for watching David.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Cannot wait to see the next episode, 👍
Excellent set of images Ricahrd and lvoe the colors on this one.. Good to have you back after a few weeks of absence for my Saturday morning viewings..
Look forward to all the videos from this series and hope you got some southern lights too
Thanks as always for watching Virat. I did chase the Southern Lights in one of the videos . .it was a frustrating adventure . .but You'll se that one in due time.
Hi Richard, it's great to see you back again. As ever the content was terrific. Tasmania remands me of Scotland, very beautiful. The pictures were great but funnily, the one I liked most was from your camping place! I look forward to further instalments.
Thanks as always for watching David.
Wonderful video and end photo results Richard. I love your sense of adventure and ability to live in the moment. Bravo!
Thanks so much for your great comments Peter, really appreciated.
Wow, wow, wow. Such beautiful photography. You've given me such inspiration as I'm heading down there next month. If I can get just one photo with Cradle Mountain and the Milky Way I'll be happy
Well it's a wonderful but rugged place to visit Debbie. Quite an adventure just being there after dark. I hope you go really well.
What a wonderful country. Awesome landscape . Great Job. Regards from Bavaria. Thomas
I thank you for watching Thomas.
Top of the game richard👏👏👏👏
Fantastic
Always appreciate your comments Brian.
Just caught this video, and I'm glad I did. Wonderful images, as always, and the first one with the Milky Way rising with the mist is just amazing. Great work, sir, and thanks again for such inspiring content.
You're always very welcome Simon. Thanks for your great support my friend.
Another awesome photography experience captured amazingly Richard. I had planned the same trip last September however had to cancel at short notice. Watching this has inspired me to get off my backside and reorganize my trip.
Love your work Richard
Thanks for the inspiration.
You're very welcome Dave. It would be wonderful down there in September.
Those Rotating Camera Brackets have become very popular with every Chinese camera gear manufacturer making them. I actually have one from your favorite brand Ulanzi.
Yes they have certainly flooded the market Keith.
Brilliant images Richard, the two pano’s were outstanding 👌
Thanks as always for watching Garry
Fantastic work Richard. Looking forward to your workshop in early September.
Thanks so much Andrew. So am I.
Good to see you back on the road Richard, Great images as ever
Thanks so much Peter
Stunning images as always Mr Richard.
Many thanks indeed Milorad.
Magic stuff Richard, great pics of one of, if not the most beautiful places I have been to.
Yes it sure is beautiful down there. Thanks for watching.
Those were amazing photos! My hats off to you. Cheers!
Thanks so much for watching Mike
Fantastic trip, as always the photos are sensational, continuation of a good trip with clear skies Richard
Thanks as always for watching Mario.
What an awesome trip and photographic adventure! As always amazing content.
Thank you so much for tuning and and watching my friend.
Fantastic as usual. Thanks, Richard
Thank you for tuning in Rodrigo.
Another awesome video Richard, the images are amazing and inspiring.
Thanks again for watching Dennis.
Awesome video of a beautiful location! Your images are stunning! Looks like a successful trip!
Thanks so much Lisa. Yes it was a full on trip but very enjoyable.
You definitely did Cradle proud. I can see I'm going to have to be on my game down there.
Thanks for watching. It's a very difficult place to shoot nightscapes.
Great video, Richard. Glad to see you on the road again.
Many thanks indeed Mike.
Amazing shots and what looks like an awesome start to a road trip.
Thanks Eric. Yes there was plenty going on that's for sure.
A happy day for me is a day you release a video. Every time I go do astrophotography, the results are better because of what you have taught. Thank you.
I'm really pleased to hear that .. it's always good to get positive feedback my friend.
So good! Some of those nebula clusters were amazing…I’ve been eyeing that Z 20mm 1.8…now I’m more intrigued by it! 📸😎
It's a very good lens Jason, you'll love it. Thanks for watching.
Wow mate, amazing work, I love it.
I hope you had an amazing time on your trip. Looking forward to seeing what you got up to next.
I did have a great time Brad. Lots of adventures to come mate.
Bravo 👏
Thanks for watching Stan.
Stunning panoramic Milky way....my first impression was WOW... Appreciated your hard work.
Access to this type of landscaping, really required lots of energy and planning...
Still I have to learn more about the panoramic in the dark location...
Thanks for watching Muhammad.
hi Richard it has been a very pleasant and special trip
Yes indeed Ibrahem. Thanks for following along.
Brilliant Richard 🇿🇦
Thanks again for watching my friend.
One more masterpiece. The shot with Orion and the house with orange lighting was just brilliant.
Thanks for your kind comments Raphael
Great work Richard you did well to create such amazing images in some not so ideal conditions. Cloud, wind, rain and cold can be quite a challenge at that location. Great channel. Inspirational content. Cheers.
Thanks again for your great encouragement my friend.
Some fantastic images. We were there just 1 week ago, unfortunately had to return home in Sydney due to a family illness. I’d love to do some astro at Cradle Mountain when we are able to get back there! Tasmania is a beautiful place to photograph. Love the vlog👍🏻
Thanks for checking it out Phil. Sorry you had to cut short your trip.
Stunning location and some fantastic images, Richard. Hope you’ve enjoyed your trip. 😊
The trip was fantastic Paul, thanks for watching.
Love your photos Richard. :)
Thanks again for watching Mark.
This was so worth the wait. What a fantastic start of a new adventure! Great location and absolutely stunning results!
Many thanks indeed for watching my friend.
WOW that first image is amazing.great video Richard as usual
Fenomenal! ❤
I appreciate you watching Vivien.
Hola, as always, fantastic work, and truly inspiring
greetings from Costa Rica
Thank you so much for tuning in my friend. Really appreciated.
As always a wonderful video with lots of inspiration. Almost as cold as here in Austria in winter 🙂
Thanks as always for watching Gunter. Much appreciated.
Amazing work Richard ❤
Thanks again for watching Stephen
Great vid Richard, safe travels, clear skies 🖖
Many thanks indeed Gavin.
Amazing images, Richard. I love that you incorporated the clouds into your shots. Living in Michigan, that's something I often have to contend with. Next time you do an editing how-to video, it would be great if you talk about how you 1) plan for that in your shooting, and 2) approach editing so that you end up with a clean and pleasing image. I've played with it a little bit and incorporated some focus stacking, but my editing was after the fact, so it lacked the intentional forethought and planning for it, so that I had the right kind of images to work with as I edited.
I'm looking forward to your next video from Tasmania.
Thanks so much for your kind comments Derek. Yes we do have to incorporate clouds on occasions but they do sometimes add greatly to the dynamics of an image.
Fantastic as usual Richard... I am planning to go to Tazzie next year, I can't wait.
You'll certainly love it down the Tim.
Cheers Richard,
From Ricky in okanagan valley 🇨🇦
Really appreciate that Rick.
stunning images
Thanks so much for watching Pradip
Great image. 👍
Thanks for tuning in Robert
You should work for the Tasmanian Tourist Board Richard. Your productions are top class. I must get there next year, usually too many tourists for us Tasmanians!
Haha, well I'm too old and not pretty enough for that I reckon Kim ..!!! Yes Cradle Mountain is a haven for tourists. There were a couple there during the night but I pretty much had the place to myself while I was there.
Excellent :) thanks
Thanks for watching Jimmy
Brilliant, although I’m not sure of Kipping in the car for two weeks😂
Haha, yes I'm not too sure about that part either Nick . .not too sure I can keep doing that.
Really nice video and images! I love the music!
Thanks so much Kerry. Music is always a big part of videos.
again a bit late to the party
thx for this great adventure, Richard
surprising that it is already 4 years ago since u were there last time
the lightened visitor center is once again one of these useless things in the mid of nowhere🤦♂
at least a timer past 10 p.m. or so would be doable...
greetings
Yes it is pointless having the visitors centre lit late at night. Probably due to security. I was in Tasmania in 2021 the last time. But I haven't been to Cradle mountain for 4 years.
Nice one Richard
Thanks for tuning in again Paul.
Fantastic as always Richard, great images and great story telling. As I start to explore some vlogging myself, I realise this is a whole new area where I can learn from you ☺
I really appreciate you watching again Greg. The video side can certainly be quite exhausting .. especially in the middle of the night .!!! You're doing a great job mate.
Thanks so much for the encouragement Richard, much appreciated. I'm really enjoying exploring this additional creative outlet
Phenomenal capture’s as usual my friend. Looking forward to more from your adventure to Tasmania again. Thank You for sharing!🙏🏻
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it John, thank you.
G'day Richard. Been a while, eh? Really enjoyed the vid. Still loving your work. Keep safe mate.
Thank you John, always appreciate your comments.
Amazing images once again. Isnt the Atoll AMAZING - gave away my bulky L bracket and never looked back :p.
Thanks a lot Judy, yes it is amazing. . although I did have some vibrations in high wind situations with it on this trip.
Great to see you back in Tassy, another sensational video. Looking forward to the rest of the adventure and pics :)
Thanks as always for watching Alan.
Great video Richard, some absolute cracking shots there, great work, glad you got everything you wanted. Durdle door in dorset or stonehenge in Wiltshire are very popular spots for people to photograph day and night. Love the boathouse one, am surprised you still have orion, we've well and truly lost it till late August
Thanks Suzie, everything lasts longer down south ...!!!!
@@nightscapeimages.richard if only I had the money and time to come and hang out with you under your Australian skies
@@andysuzierawlins5462 Yes I must admit, we have amazing skies over here ..!!!
Wonderful work as always, Richard! Thank you.
Really appreciate you watching Jeff
Wow Richard - what a start to the trip!! My jaw hit the floor when you put up that first pano - many people have shot the boathouse but none of them shoot it like you my friend. That was a spectacular outcome! Looking forward to seeing what you got this year in Tassie. All the best 👍👍
You're very kind indeed Brian, thanks for watching mate.
I agree 100% with Brian. The first panorama with the arc of the Milky Way made a great impression on me. I can imagine how much work you must have put into the post-production of this picture, Richard. Well done.
Richard I have been waiting for the first of these videos to come through and I really don't have many words to say, other than WOW, breathtaking, stunning. It makes me want to get there sooner than later, awesome images, great vid 🤩😍. Thank you 😊
You'd love it down there Maz, quite stunning scenery everywhere.
What a fabulous introduction and the outtro with that scenery is great. The images are amazing Richard in tricky conditions but you pulled it off beautifully the panos are exceptional mate. Hope your hands have warmed up 🥶 👏👏👏
Thanks Carl. Yes it was pretty cold there .. but well worth the effort.
@@nightscapeimages.richard did you have a lot of red airglow Richard as I shot last new moon and it was crazy red! I’ve not posted them yet as I’m still editing one or two 👍
@@carlreid4161 Yes there has been a lot of red and green airglow recently.
❤❤❤ such an amazing video, again and as usual with everything you produce. The pictures … 😱😱😱 WoW Ouh! So breathtaking 😮😮😮
I’m wondering? It looked so easy when you flipped the Z6 from landscape to portrait mode … how did you do that? I seem to struggle every time I do that …
Thank you for bringing to us such beauty. Luv ya ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks as always for watching Carole. I was using a new product called the Atoll. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
@@nightscapeimages.richard
WoW! Looks awesome 👏! I’ll look into it. It seems to work wonderfully. Thank you for the info, my DEAREST! ♥️♥️
I’m feeling the need for some content around how to deal with adverse conditions when shooting nightscapes Richard what do you think?
Haha, well there just so happens to be one such video in this series. . but you'll have to wait a while to see that one.
I mistook that for somewhere in the Scottish highlands for a brief moment.
Yes it is a bit like the highlands. Thanks so much for watching.
You need a roof top tent!
Yes but I doubt the Subaru roof racks are strong enough for that.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I've seen then here in the states with them but I don't know if they had to do anything extra to make it work.
Awesome images 👌. Just hope you were the only photographer in there that night. Headlight giving me severe anxiety 😅
Thanks for watching Craig. Yes I get where you're coming from .. but I do have to see my way in the dark . .and film a video. There were a couple of others there at the start, but not in view of where I was.
Great work. Hope to see you out and about 1 day legend 💪
Beautiful images Richard!👌 Perhaps I missed it in the show notes, when you changed your camera position from horizontal to portrait how was it mounted to your tripod head that made it look so easy and fast?
Thanks for watching again Holly. That's the Atoll mount. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
What an exciting trip, I am very pleased you managed to get such great conditions at Cradle Mountain. I loved the Cradle Mountain/Boatshed pano it is fantastic Richard. I am rather envious and look forward to more of this trip. May I ask what the attachment is that allowed you to turn the camera from landscape to portrait mode without an L bracket? Wishing you all the best for the rest of your trip.
Thanks as always for looking Les. It's the Atoll by Silence Corner. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
@@nightscapeimages.richard Thank you very much. Did you need any other item other than the one in the link Richard?
