Caruana’s cunning chess combination

- Featured is the game between Fabiano Caruana and Ruslan Ponomariov from the 2014 Dortmund Sparkassen Tournament. The opening is a Petrov’s Defense, Nimzowitsch Attack with Caruana and Ponomariov both castling queenside. In the middlegame, Caruana’s f4 creates targetable isolated pawns in Ponomariov’s camp. In the endgame, Ponomariov’s principled looking b6 carries a weakness that Caruana quickly exploits. The final combination by Caruana was so aesthetic that Ponomariov was kind enough to let it play out straight to mate!

Huge respect to Ponomariov for accepting to be checkmated
Caruana is an amazing chess player. Not lucky to have Carlsen in the same time period. Jerry I miss the streamers battle videos! Started following your chanell as 1000ish now I am playing at 1800. Thanks a lot for the great content!
Great jump 👍
Really classy of Ponomariov to let the tactic play out. The romantic in me feels like more games should actually end in checkmate.
That ending is beautiful. Props to rus, for letting it play out.
Wow - very classy of Pono to let it play to mate.
Classy Caruanua!
Pono didn't see it. That's why it played out until mate. In fact, Pono still doesn't see it!
Beautiful ending, and i am glad when they let it play out to mate.
hi Jerry. it's everyone
😊
Hi chess its king
You got a chuckle out of me
Only the 100th time ive seen this comment
hey john this is guys
Classic allowance for the game to go forward by Ponomariov. Beautiful.
Please keep the "feel free to pause" segments, I love them. Amazing game. Beautiful finish. Learnt so much.
4 ACL. Amazing. I love that he mates with one piece while black has a queen, rook, and bishop on the board but not "in the game".
I caught some of your stream the other day and I heard you praising my New York Jets, very wholesome stuff thanks Jerry
They are going to the playoffs this year no doubt. 👍

Does the title suggest, there's something going on on c4?
Oh I seeee....
Certainly Caruana’s Cunning Chess Combination Commenced Climactically. Which is why it was such a shocker when Fabiano played pawn C7, capturing an enemy pawn, as his opening move. Unprecedented.
ba6 is such a slick idea!
sure made the queen bishop and rook look silly
Woow that finish was awesome 😊 Thanks for the video
That is a very gentleman move of GM Ponomariov allowing this great combination be written in books for us to appreciate the beauty of the game. Unlike what GM Robert Byrne did when he resigned after Fischer played Qd7..i read fischer's regret of it because his opponent resigned after seeing the combination of tactics.
Everyone to jerry: Hi!
👋
This combination is so difficult even after I told people there's a combination here they could not figure this out. Caruana is legendary!
When a strong player gives away a rook you know there is some idea behind that move
Found g6 and Ba6 but missed Re7... basically Caruana was thinking: this bishop and queen could mate the king ... only if the black rook and queen could leave the 8th rank, and so he had a plan to make that happen.
I'm missing some "Back to tournament" & "Fishing pole" action haha, thanks for the analysis Jerry!
😊😎👍
@@ChessNetwork yea those Chesscube days were fun :)😎
Great game and commentary, thank you!
Crazy mate!!! Wow!
Good chess. Complex chess. I wouldn't understand the details without Jerry explanation
Pretty game. Thank you, Jerry!
Loving these regular videos! Thank you, Jerry!
Great game. Great analysis. Thanks Jerry.
Your videos are the best!
Wow, once again, excellent comments all the way through.
That ending was beautiful! My heart is still beating hard!
That is a nice mating pattern to remember, or it could be missed!
I had a chance once, to use it, but missed it being also distracted, but noticed.I had the chance right after making a different move!
But I did see it after seeing a game Fabi played (maybe this one here, but years ago checking his greatest games) where he mated just like this.
I pays to study a little, each super GM to see why there are
excellent
I saw the rook sac sequence before it was played . Nice instructional game it demonstrates the advantage of having more space than your opponent❤.
What a beautiful finish!!! TY GM!
My wife asked me what was wrong when Ba6 was played -- I told her nothing, everything was finally right in the world.
Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt
I found all 3 pop quizzes. Very proud of myself
class - i didn't see the rook sac at all
Hi Jerry, please cover the game by petrosian again, it's interesting to see your explanation about his game... Thanks!
Early 2010s Caruana was an animal
Are you going to analyze any games from the 2023 fide world cup?
Thanks for another great video, Jerry!
Beautiful
Great explanations you do Mr. Jerry. Keep up the wonder work. But I was wondering, the way to draw on chessboard during explanations, how do you do it? Can you kindly make a video on how you do it?
Did not get the first pop quiz, but i did get the second/third after a few minutes and it was so cool to see that!
Indeed a very nice combination. Thanks Jerry.
If you remove the word Chess from the title, it becomes so much sinister 😅.
Also, algorithm 😮
Thanks Jerry
Thanks Jerry.
I got White’s 2nd to last move right albeit I was not confident about the move order between that and White’s 3rd to last….
Probably because I totally missed White’s concluding move! Happens to me alot.
Anyway, this reminded me to ask you: Do you think that anywhere around middle game GMs ever just see a *configuration* that they’re confident will lead to a win - or do you think they invariably calculate precisely, move by move?
that was amazing thank you
I'll buy a t-shirt and will print "FELL FREE TO PAUSE THE VIDEO" from Chessnetwork
Fantastic end game
Tripple zero and 99% accuracy. My gosh
4 centipawns, 2 and less is 100% i guess
Ponomariov being an S tier individual for letting that play our till checkmate
Re7!! What a move. Beautiful.
Yes I found Re7. I had been looking at Ba6 for a while as when the K takes Qa8 is mate IF there are no bank rank pieces
Just wow
Wonderful idea, befitting of Caruana's level.
Jerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry. Love the vids
but why not
29 Qd2 b6?
or if not that then
31 Bf5?
Wow 😅
Very nice. When you look into a mirror to blame someone you will see yourself.
The minute that Queen made it to C6, I was looking for that bishop queen checkmate. Didn't see that rook sacrafice, tho. Of course it was super obvious after it was played. Fabiano had to see that several moves out. I guess that's why he is a super GM and I'm a 1800 😂
Fabilous
Chess is a baffling game.
Jerry ,a nice alternative you could have shown is rf8 instead of rg7 ,white had g7 rg8 rg5!!
Jerry you popped off
After Re7, black has Qd6, but then Rc6+ and he's out of luck anyway.
Thanks, Jerry!
*alliterations everywhere*
How does Caruana see the Ba6 sequence??? These players are not human...
Wow, really great game of Fabiano, he still got a very good kombi. He was 2 in the world behind Magnus :), but this show how good and very nice kombi can do :)
Do you have a Lichess study of the games in the videos? Thanks.
It’s pawn move
Unreal!
I found moves 37, 39, and 40 just in the wrong order and because I thought they were thematic blunders.
What happens if the rook on the 7th rank is not taken by the queen?
Rxc7 looks unstoppable
Would it be worse for white if 20. h4 is played? With the upcoming dark square bishop exchange it makes more sense to fix the pawns on black.
I had the same idea. I answered to myself that Rde1 was mainly played for a tactical reason, which is to prevent 20...f6 as explained by Jerry.
Thx
What end
Wow... what else to say?
🐱
Hi Jerry.
12.30

😍
amazing! i saw nothing haha
*ueeep*
Why do you always say "feel free to pause the video". Trust me, we pause the videos whenever we want to. Sometimes throughout. And yes, even when you don't say it.
