  • A paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 12: 31-13: 13
Love Never Fails is a paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 12: 31-13, 8. In this passage Saint Paul concentrates on the gift of love, the greatest of all the spiritual gifts, and an opportunity for all. Self-sacrifice and service of others is the greatest manifestation of that love, and this kind of love will never cease to be our greatest calling as believers. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux said: “My vocation is love.”
The last part of Love Never Fails speaks about the three (3) theological virtues. “The human virtues are rooted in the theological virtues, which adapt man’s faculties for participation in the divine nature: for the theological virtues relate directly to God. They dispose Christians to live in relationship with the Holy Trinity. They have the One and Triune God for their origin, motive and object.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 1812) 26 It is not just the Gospel reading but also the other preceding readings - namely the Old Testament Reading and the New Testament Reading - that are the bases for choosing songs for Communion. The biblical reference of the three theological virtues is 1 Corinthians 13:13.
This Pauline Epistle is found in the Lectionary as the Second (2nd) Reading on the Fourth (4th) Sunday in Ordinary Time -Year C with its long form 12: 31-13: 8 and its short form 13: 4-13 - “There are three things that last: faith, hope and love; and the greatest of these is love.” and as the First (1st) Reading on Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth (24th) Week in Ordinary Time -Year II. It is also one of the choices and most often heard New Testament Reading for the Celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. On this particular Sunday, weekday, Celebration of Matrimony and Anniversaries of Marriages in which renewal takes place, Love Never Fails is highly recommended as a Communion Song. The three (3) theological virtues are mentioned in the variable Presidential Prayer on two days of Lent: the Prayer After Communion on the First (1st) Sunday of Lent. “Father, You increase our faith and hope, you deepen our love in this communion...”, alternative Opening Prayer or Collect ofthe Fourth (4th) Sunday of Lent: “Teach us, the people who bear His name, to follow the example He gave us; may our faith, hope, and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, death to eternal life.” These are also the days we can sing Love Never Fails so as to support the euchological texts.
Special use of the song is on Holy Thursday’s Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper during the Washing of the Feet for the reason that the last which is the sixth antiphon is from 1 Corinthians 13: 1 - “Faith hope and love, let these endure among you; and the greatest of these is love.”
