"If you don't shoot it, I'll shoot you" implies the reason behind shooting the son's ant is not because it's an ant, but because it's big enough that the father can only afford to feed one or the other.

Something about Zach having an innocent goofy smile while hoisting up a giant ant as unsettling music fades in really hits me. Like "hey Tomar check out this cool ant I found."
This is why Tomar now uses his iconic shrink ray on his victims to evade justice

I think if ants were like twice the size they would be able to kill a man
They would only be as strong as two ants…
A fire or bullet ant may kill you with one bite if you experience anaphylactic shock, but I don't know if humans are allergic to their toxin. Other than that, there are species of work ants that are like 1cm long in australia, and the soldiers are much bigger, like 3 cm. They still pose no danger at all, they aren't big or strong enough to pierce through the skin, and even if they did, they can't rip enough tissue off to cause mass organ failure.
You can just walk away and brush them off.

I think it all comes down to mannerisms and how alien it is to the person. As I get older, I'm less okay with squashing bugs unless they pose an actual health risk. I see both Tomar's perspective and Zach's where if a bug gets big, it's scarier, but if it behaved like a cat, it's less scary and even dare I say cute.

I swear if there were foot long ants there’d freaks who’d raise them as pets.
Of course. People already keep mantises, tarantulas, scorpions... but they're not really pets, they're more like ornaments that eat. I'd consider it, maybe if they had, like... mammal intelligence, so they could have some kind of personality and you could bond with them. I'd let my sweet little giant cat-ant run around the house and steal all the fruit from the fruit bowl.

I'd say its more about how smart it is. Jumping spiders are actually very smart for their size, so I would much rather kill like a fish or something bigger than a jumping spider

I wouldn’t say it’s size it’s level of intelligence. Like some breeds of insects exist purely to move nutrients around an ecosystem system. Ants don’t understand friendship or emotion but bee colonies can remember beekeepers.

Honestly would say when it actually takes effort. Like it takes effort to chase down a fast moving cat and kill it with a rusty shovel on April 4th 2024.
But an ant you just kinda step on it. The morality comes in when you actively have to TRY to kill something.
What if the cat was in cat hospital, though? What if it was deathly ill with a terminal cat disease and you unplugged its cat life support while the cat nurses weren't looking? That'd be easy, right?
