  • This is one of a series of videos covering the full dismantling, restoration and rebuild of a Norton Commando engine and gearbox. This particular video shows the removal of the cylinder head from the barrels.

    Hi Chris,
    I did take a quick look at Andover Norton's site and in fact the drawings do call out a "special tool"/socket for the removal/installation of bolt #1. The tool is indeed a 1/4 Whitworth socket. Be interesting to see if your socket will fit your commando? I am interested now and will look in my tools and check on my 71 Commando.

      I'm sure I used that socket on the No1 stud on my own bike when I built it - that's what I bought it for. Very confusing. 🤔

      Checked my own bike and that nut is defo a 1/4 Whit on that. Confusing. 🤔
