    I once had a similar issue when water got into my turbo booster having entered a sizable puddle in heavy rain on Bodmin some two years ago.
    This led to a frightening loss of power but very fortunately an amazing piece of luck put me beside the AA in a parking area just off the the A30.
    Within an hour I was on my way again with no further trouble since after a hefty dose of WD 40!I have always remained very aware of what can go wrong if the standard 19" wheel height is exceeded. Your explanation of the hole (whole) issue in the bottom of the air filter housing is excellent and I will get this checked out during the next service.

    I posted that toilet valve rubber diaphragm solution on the Freel2 forum years ago. However, I eventually gave up as they kept falling off. Next time I've got the airbox off, I'll have a go at some sort of extra washer/screw down the middle to see if I can get it to stay on longer - So thanks for that idea.

      The homebase one definitely needs a screw/bolt to keep it in place. I’ve also heard that the siamp one can also fall off after a while if not held in place.

    That section on the plane almost caught me out too because of my air filter hole of doom 😬 luckily I kept the intake just high enough to not fully saturate the air filter!

    Please check out the rubber boot type 'Air Cleaner Dump Valve' as used on a Range Rover P38 Diesel's airbox (and Defender TD5) that in that application fits over the outside of the airbox plastic circular stub of the moulding. It however may need space below it to fit, which on a Freelander 2 would need to be checked. Also the diameter of this item may be different to the Freelander airbox stub. The Land Rover part number is PKS100140. An early Defender uses a similar one, part number NTC3751, which appears to be longer body, but may be different diameter.

    What's needed for this is a slender float with this rubber on the inner side. During normal driving (or just when parked) the float is open due to gravity. When the car is plunged into deep water the force of the water will close the float/valve and the buoyancy (of the float part) then keeps it closed. It would be simple to make.

    • @BeavisPits
      @BeavisPits  2 года назад

      I tried designing exactly that, but there is very limited room underneath the airbox. Maybe a goose neck to a pingpong ball valve like in the top of a swimming snorkel.

    Planning on also doing the housing mod on mine.

    I have fitted a McAlpine non return valve to my air box. They are about £10 from Screwfix. Zero water in and full flow out. I had to trim it as there is not much room underneath. It can't fall off as it has a mechanical fixing plus silicone sealant.

    Great idea that you have come up with. Can you measure the airflow at the side inlet point and then at the mass airflow device to ascertain any airflow difference at say 2500 RPM. Possibly the air filter box has a slight negative difference which causes the water valve to seal better. I have seen a LR2 with a snorkel.

    • @BeavisPits
      @BeavisPits  2 года назад

      The air flow may well keep the drain hole sealed yes. Not sure how I could measure this though. There are snorkels out there but I don’t really like the look of them.

    We all know the Freelander 2 is not Amphibious. So if your'e take it deep fit a Snorkel. It states wading depth in the owners manual. Which is not having water over the bonnet or entering the wing air intake. The factory air filter box is poor fitting/design. I'm sure many modifications would need doing to ensure the car was water tight before doing some of that extreme dunking.💦 SD4 GS 2011 👍 Proud owner of 11 years........

    Have you had to do anything to waterproof your FR2 raise breathers, electrics etc? as the ford looked way above the 500mm wading depth

    I worry that the thick plumbing diaphragm won't evacuate the water fast enough. Bear in mind that a waterfall can enter through that vent.
    The thin plastic diaphragm was chosen by LR for a reason. And is designed to drain out small amounts of moisture. It is not designed to evacuate the large volume that can enter through the vent.
    So my solution would be as follows.
    1) Select a thin plastic diaphragm like those used in toilet cisterns then cut to fit.
    Or....... Try one that is meant to go in a Kazoo (10 for around £2 from China. See links below).
    2) install a powerful 12v pump that can be run dry. And l mean "powerful". Fit the pump on the outside as low as possible & drill a hole to accommodate the "large bore" hose (think about that waterfall).
    Forget the float switch as those can fail. And even if they work, a lot of water will be in there before that switch activates. Every fraction of a second matters when water is pouring into your intake at that rate.
    How often will you go through deep water?........ Exactly.
    So simply install a toggle switch below the dash & turn on the pump every time you go through water.
    3) install a high water alarm. About £4 from China.
    A simple battery box with a sensor to install anywhere you choose. That will remain on 24/7 as it uses no power. Then you will be alerted if any moisture contacts that sensor.
    And also consider that if your intake vent is below the water level then your engine will cut out as there is no air supply whatsoever.
    The water will be coming in so fast that even your powerful pump won't save the engine. So when your moisture alarm activates........ turn off immediately & get the lads to tow you out.
    If you plan on going that deep then invest in the snorkel.
    Otherwise, always let the guys with the snorkels fitted go first to assess the depth. If it's bonnet level then get a tow through that puddle. Then turn on your pump & have a look in your box before you turn on your engine as it will still fill up with your engine off.
    Then dry out thoroughly & install the spare dry filter (which you should carry) before you start the engine.

      Thanks James for this detailed and thorough comment. I will look at a water alarm, pump etc in a later video. Remember though that the FL2 wading depth is 0.5m which is below the wing air intake. The diaphragm is there to let small amounts of water out due to rain, spray, car washing etc not to allow the car to wade deeper than the intake. If you do that it will be game over, even with a thinner diaphragm. A snorkel is the only proper way forward. Sadly these are only made by two companies in the world and both look pretty awful IMHO. I am developing one, slowly!

      The hole is there to allow water out that may have entered via the wing vent from rain, puddle splashes, or washing the car. It shouldn’t be blocked up completely.
