  • We lost the last of our legacy downtown stores in the 1980s but we gained a mall, a top rated radio station, and hosted Mr. T and Johnny Cash. This video takes you on a five minute trip back to the days of cassettes and bewilderment over who shot J.R. with a focus on what was going on in Council Bluffs at the time.

I loved Beno’s, especially on Crazy Days. I think it’s so sad how everything has changed. Wonderful video.

Thanks for the kind words, Bonnie; glad you enjoyed it! We have a video about Beno's in the works. That should be out in a few weeks.

I really wish there were more photos of the Mall of the Bluffs during its heyday.

I remember World Radio and Skaggs. I remember The 64 Club, Midlands Mall, which is now Omni Centre Business Park. Although I was never inside, I was familiar with the Crest movie theater. Bluffs Run is just the Horseshoe Casino, now.
I was living in Bellevue, Nebraska, when the grain elevator exploded. The shock wave shook Logan Fontenelle (then) Junior High.
Mall of the Bluffs is mostly torn down, and being replaced with a Menard’s.

Glad to hear you are enjoying them! It is wonderful that you are so interested in learning the past of your adopted home! We really do believe Council Bluffs has touched more history of regional and even national significance than most cities its size, largely due to its location and the LDS establishing it as one of the few fully functioning towns on the frontier. You've probably seen these already but if not these two short videos summarize that significant early history fairly well:

I loved growing up in the 80s and 90s. I am very grateful I wasn't a teen today in today's twisted society. These videos make me feel good knowing I had a good childhood. Also love all of the history of CB. Omaha can make all the jokes they want.

In 1982 when that grain bin explosion happened I was in junior high at Bancroft in Omaha. It shook the building and knocked out a few windows.

Our local fire historian, retired fire marshal Cal Petersen, has said it was one of the fiercest fires in the city's history. Not the worst in terms of life lost (that remains the nursing home fire) but as far tenacity it was right there at the top of the list.
