Wishing all the best for your new venture. Long may it succeed. As an additional enticement for customers, perhaps it worth mentioning how close you are the the FAA Museum. I've spent several hours in there with my camera.
Yes very close! We often have a Griffon engined Seafire from Yeovilton doing aerobatics over the top of us. We are next to RNAS Merryfield, that is a satellite Navel station and it come over, does a half hour routine and heads back. It's great to watch!
Really enjoyed the video Andy and also our visit to your shop this Saturday afternoon where my son and I managed to spend a little money with you. You have built up a great shop with an excellent range of kits and modelling materials, far more than shown in this video. Its very well laid out and easy to see everything. We are looking forward to returning soon or shop via your web shop. We wish you every success for the future. Cheers.
It's so exciting to see another hobby shop being opened, best of luck to you, once you've got the EU shipping on your site I will definitely be ordering from you
One thing I’ve personally learned over my hobby adventures is that it’s great to have models to buy, but you can just order those online (everyone got a major backlog anyway lol), but the PAINTS! That’s what I think already boosts the appeal of your shop. So. Many. Damn. Options! I love it. Best of luck to you!
I really hope this works out for you, only advice I can give is from the proprietor of a model shop that had lasted for almost 40 years until about 7 years ago, he was closing down and the simple reason was "online shopping - I can't compete with the prices and factor in my time for wrapping and deliveries", simply put, he had been pricing HIMSELF out of the market. You're going to have to be VERY canny about pricing so that people don't walk in, see what they want, then go home and order it online for less. I FULLY understand you are bricks and mortar and rent and overheads, but 99.9% customers do not care about your costs, only thiers, so you'll either have to get a "hook" of some kind, like say inviting a local model group to use the facility and do groups for beginners, at almost no cost to them, or figure some other way to make local modellers LOYAL TO YOU and not mind spending a few extra pounds here and there to help support a local business that is supporting them. If there isn't a local modelling group, make one, doesn't just have to be scale models, could be tabletop gaming too as they still paint and assemble kits, just different - find local FB groups for modelling or again, make one, spread the word you have a place they can all go to do it together, make friends and have fun with likeminded people; truth is I wish I had that opportunity for my modelling - it's just not as big in the UK as in the US with shows etc - and "lightbulb" you could do a bi-yearly show of local modellers things with a few prizes etc. It won't be easy and running a new business WILL take more of your time than you might want to give, so your family will have to be in the loop as well, but get your pricing right and you'll have a chance to make it to year 2, and frankly "break even" for at least a year will be a success by most new companies standards. Make it through year 2 and you might be able to make to year 5, if you make it to year 5 you should be OK after that. Ilminster isn't so far away from me - about an hour, so maybe I'll swing by sometime. Oh another thought - almost every modeller I've ever met has a stash of models WAAAY larger than they can probably actually do - offer a "buy back" service to buy kits they won't make, but offer a reasonable price, not a schmucks price and you might get a reputation for being a place to get your hands on old / rare kits that have been stored away for 30 years, I know I've got a few myself that are now out of production. Yes some people sell on ebay, but ebay can be fickle on prices, be straight and fair and reasonable and I'll bet people might prefer to sell to you than the hassle of ebay. Just a few thoughts.
Hi Rafe, thank you for your considered message. There are all sorts of things you can do and certainly local 'walk-in' business is always going to be very important to me. I didn't want to start an online only business, I want to create a destination model shop that even people travelling down to the Westcountry on holiday, will want to swing by. Also a shop run by someone who builds models and can give advise is important. Online distribution logistics is always going to be a big one, maybe I can start a Monday morning, packing models club for local enthusiasts! lol. Feel free to pop in any time, always free for a chat! Cheers, Andy.
That is flipping awesome, Mr Shed! Really great to see a new shop open, even though it is thousands of miles from me. Looks like a well stocked shop. I'm sure it will be a hit. Are those your 1/1 scale projects in the background?
I am very surprised to find you are only a few miles away from me! I'll definitely be visiting next Saturday. A welcome addition to the area as there are hardly any proper model shops nearby.
The shed looks brilliant! I'm also very pleased your focus on build videos isn't going away. Your video quality and presentation is by far and away the best going on RUclips. I wish you continued growth and success and will be looking for the website to support you.
Thank you so much David, I am still really focused on making interesting build videos and pushing to becoming a better modeller. Thanks for watching. Andy
Hi very nice shop there! I have suggestions, maybe invest in some cheaper paints and kits like humbrol and cheap airfix or academy so older generations would find it easier to go around your shop. But overall very nice shop and definitely will be checking out when I go to the UK!
Hi would you know the make of models from the 80s that were 1/1 scale firearms, used to love making them ,now in my 50s would like another crack at it if I could find a few
So exciting to hear about this! The video popped up in my feed - couldn't believe my luck when I found out the shop is 20 mins from my house! I really hope the shop is a success. Will be heading down as soon as I can.
Oh wowwww this is pretty damn close to me (nr Lyme) and the sorts of tools, accessories, paints, models etc look just the job. May have to find my way up there sharpish.
I Martin Abdilla I would like to order from you but the postage is very high as I live in Malta for example what is the postage for paints hope I hear from you thank you have a nice day
I hope you do well, because if there are more than two Tesco will sell it until business is finished then leave us with nothing as most things they delve in,I see Aldi flogging kits if you call them that, but like anything I hope you do well.
There's one thing wrong with your shop... It's not on my doorstep!! I'd kill for that range of paints available locally, however I'll be making use of your mail order in the future, those Mr Color paints are the best lacquers around. Best of luck with your shop and I hope it's very successful.
If only I was still based in Yeovilton I would pop over in a flash but alas I left the RN and moved to Central Europe. Looking forward to the website and of course when I'm back in the UK I shall stop by on my way to Plymouth
Hi Guys, You're more than welcome! The Premium range is doing well. I'm looking forward to getting the online shop started and using it in a few videos! It is lovely paint. Speak soon! Andy.
Thats a great shop! Unfortunately for me I would have to drive from California US, but Ill still enjoy your building and Ill check out your online store when its up. Good luck!
"introduction to airbrushing classes" I'd bet that would be a great way to get people through the door, minimal fee ofc. Classes for adding LED's, weathering, etc etc. Yes youtube shows stuff but honestly actually SEEING methods beign applied in person and able to ask questions WHILE it's being done, is a much better way to learn.
I see the Airfix 1/600 HMS Hood there, the second ship I ever built and a pig of a kit. Perhaps it would be interesting to see what an ancient mould like that can be turned into in the hands of a real master like yourself.
Wow, best of luck to you. The world needs more makers and doers so it's great to see your venture taking shape! Cheers from Sydney - Dave PS. You sound much like a refined version of my old favourite actor, Michael Caine. Bet you've heard that before!
Excellent, another shop to browse and purchase from and it's in the uk whoohoo, being a sad old petrol head I'd love to see your car please 👍🙂 I very much look forward to browsing your website. Very best wishes for your success!
What a superb shop this is going to be. Here in The Netherlands we’ve a complete lack of shops like this. Only small ones selling a very sparse amount of stuff….
Best of luck mate, I see you got the balls, you’ll have to because the wife will hate me doing these again. Being a Devonian in Scotland but my folks are in South Moltom north Devon. Looking forward to parting with my cold gold. Best of luck mate.
When I were lad, it was Airfix enamel paint in the daft wee screw top jars and that was pretty much it. Now, the range of paint types / manufacturers / suppliers is nuts - ! 😁
Fantastic news Andy! I’ve watched a few of your builds and am very impressed with your work. I’ve just subbed. Keep up the great work! Cheers from across the pond😃
Congrats on the new endeavour! Looks like a model shop I wouldn't mind visiting. Next time I'm in the UK if I'm in the right part of the country I'll make a point of popping in and buying a couple of things.
You're a brave man, and I admire you for it. A real model shop! Looks very like a wonderful model shop I visited in Krakow recently. I'm already planning a midweek break in Taunton.
Great to meet you earlier today with one of my boys. The shop is terrific and I enjoyed chatting about the photos on the wall. I wish you every success.
Best of luck with the shed shop, stock looks really good already (nice cars too!) Looking forward to trying those SMS paints, read good things about them. Wish I lived closer, but it'll have to be mail order!
The shop looks great!! It takes me back to when i was a kid and going to the hobby shops around here but now a days there all gone and i miss the small hobby shops they were fun to go to and meet other people who were in to the hobby. Now a days you have to just about order everything online so i wish you luck with the new hobby shop and can't wait to see more of your work.

It's so exciting to see another hobby shop being opened, best of luck to you, once you've got the EU shipping on your site I will definitely be ordering from you

I know someone who was in the RAF during WWII and piloted horsa gliders. Do you have any scale models of those gliders?

@@ScaleModelShed I should have added "more youthful" to that (which is very close to "useful"...). 🙂
Hope things are going well for you mate!
Great place 🙂

Excellent, another shop to browse and purchase from and it's in the uk whoohoo, being a sad old petrol head I'd love to see your car please 👍🙂 I very much look forward to browsing your website. Very best wishes for your success!
For anyone who is wondering about SMS paints, they are amazing, great colour matching and spray perfectly from the bottle or thinned further.
Agreed Travis. I will use them on my next build to show everyone! Cheers. Andy
What a superb shop this is going to be. Here in The Netherlands we’ve a complete lack of shops like this. Only small ones selling a very sparse amount of stuff….
