I have a friend that lives on a sea yacht. An otter become friends with his lab. The otter comes in through the dog door, and jumps in the ocean during the day. It's funny. He's just as gentle as a dog.

There's a couple of Japanese RUclipsrs who own small clawed asian otters (the one I watch is called Kotsumet) and they're the closest I've seen to having an otter living in your home rather than an outdoor enclosure. They are very very well treated and cared for and they take them anywhere they are allowed. The male they own even knows tricks. I'd say they make good *selective* pets, as they are like a dog and cat combined that also need a large body of water to swim in. It is a lifestyle, like owning an alligator is one. They have captive bred ones since I think there's a couple breeders in Japan

They make great pets but they are very very smart, the smarter than cats, they do crave attention tho, its best to get a male and female pair as in the wild they will almost never be alone and really need constant company to feel safe. You can train them to do all kinds of tricks, walk on a lead, and use a litter box without much issue. They do love fish the most but will eat most types of cat food and chicken/turky.

Mr. Chow is lovely and I'm glad he has you to take care of him. Only very few people can provide what otters need, they're certainly not for the average pet owner or income! I love them, but I would never try keeping one. There are a couple of RUclips otter channels that do a great job and others that don't - it's good to know the difference.
You also need to keep them in at least groups of 2 (Mr Chow is an exception as a rescue of course!).

Otter owners parade their pets around on leads or go swimming with them, then share their pictures online. But these jolly photos mask a trade that is doing a lot of damage. Even before they became fashionable companions for humans, Asia’s wild otters faced plenty of threats. Their habitats are disappearing. They have long been hunted for their coats, or culled by farmers who wish to prevent them feasting on fisheries. The pet trade, which began picking up in the early 2000s but appeared to accelerate a few years ago, has made things worse. The numbers of wild Asian small-clawed otters and smooth-coated otters, two species that are in highest demand, have declined by at least 30% in the three decades to 2019.

    • @lorileeolmsted3869

I know of the y-tube video makers you refer to, but I understand why they are doing this. It’s not to glorify having the ASC otter as a pet, but actually it’s just the opposite. They want people to see exactly what kind of commitment is involved. Most of these people are legally classified as permitted keepers of an endangered species with the goal of preventing extinction, and educating the public as to the extensive care required, why it is not a good idea to have as a common pet, and obviously they try very hard to give these otters a really good life, they go way beyond basic food, water and shelter. Monetary donations are appreciated by these keepers, as being responsible for their food, vet bills, environmental requirements, mental stimulation requirements, etc… are not cheap. These folks have taken on a life time job caring for these otters with great dedication and intentions. Also, with humans taking over the planet we share with all non humans, 4 footed, 2 legged, 8 legged, (you get it) we are driving these poor creatures out of their natural habitats, so we can lay asphalt roads, gas stations & Walgreens on damned near every block, line those city blocks with concrete sidewalks on both sides of the asphalt, houses 15’ apart, so the Donald trumps of the world can out build each other with a higher complex than the last one, fill the lakes, rivers, & oceans with our waste, and then you wonder why certain people take on the responsibility of caring for wild animals? We humans need to change our ways of living on this planet that is not just ours alone! We MIGHT have the highest order of thinking, but we are the most self centered, self destructive, and slow learners of all beings on the planet!

    • @angelsoul3359
      @angelsoul3359 2 года назад +1

A very important thing to keep in mind is that, unlike other pets, otters are NOT domesticated!
They havent been bred and kept as pets or work animals for generations.
So no matter, an otter is closer to a wild animal then a pet.
Luckily otters, and most mustelids, are naturally fitting pets and work animals. Less then dogs, cats, horses, etc. But still close.
Ferrets for instance are mustelids that are fully domesticated and bred by humans for mouse andcrabbit hunting. They dont exist by nature, but cause of our breeding.
Otters are not domesticated though, or only very recently.
They are also the most intelligent of the mustelids, so need more time and more attention.
An otter comes close to the level of a parrots in need for attention and mental stimulation.
In the end, otters make good, but very challanging pets.
Bot because they havent been domesticated for generation yet, and because they need a lot of attention, socializing and mental stimulation.

And the animal hasn't eaten yet, so let's talk about expense to feed him raw chicken everyday.

I feel like the short answer is "no, otters don't make good pets".
The longer answer seems more like "otters are not easy to care for and have specialised needs, if you want to care for otters you need to be really serious about it, be well educated about them and be well prepared".

If I had the money to not have to work, I would own a few. I would certainly take at least a full year learning before I did, though.

There’re few YT channels from Japan where people own otters as pets. From what’s shown in those vids it’s extremely fun and entertaining, iWorks go further and say it’s a next level pet. So playful, cute, funny and great swimmers. That’s where it might be a little extra work as well cause daily swimming it’s necessary for them to maintain good health so that means you’ll have to adapt yourself and your house to that. An area to dry them up will be needed, etc. conclusion: I would totally have otter as pet❣️

Just reminded me of that film about a guy who ends up with an otter in central London. I think it’s called Ring of bright water.
Quite a good little movie if I’m remembering right.

Look up how even the zoo where otters and Orangutans cohabit, the apes can have trouble dealing with otter energy.

Idk if putting the raccon enclosure next to the sea otter enclosure was an intentional refference but it reminds me of rocket and lilla from guardians of the galaxy 3

Old boy! You can see his age through his face 😄. 9:45 being an obligate carnivore, what are your thoughts on owners feeding their pet otters kibbles? Guess they fall in the similar category of house cats. Thanks in advance.

I am so sorry, will pray for you, just remember young otters in the wild have a high death rate also, losing one does not necessarily mean you did something wrong. Just listen to the best vets you can find but try not to blame yourself if you are following the best advice and still lose one, I know it's heartbreaking 💔
