Ive believed for years, that sealed hits harder. I had 2 old Kicker 15s in a sealed box and I used to set off Car alarms..and THAT was my guage. They sat in the back of a Sport Explorer and had plenty of airspace to expand.

What I've noticed is that, to gain 3db or more from the subs in a ported enclosure. You need an enclosure that's ridiculously large. As in like 2x larger.
I prefer sealed honestly. My 12s are in a sealed enclosure.

This agrees with the iron law that of course more space makes more Bass.
I've always loved triple or quadruple sealed setups because you can fit twice the drivers in the same amount of air space while maintaining a tighter more accurate sound that has more impact.
I'm actually headed out to the garage right now to start building my sealed enclosure for three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12s. They are the best deal out there by a mile if you want ultra high performance xbl2 motor sealed subwoofer setups.
Ported can move a lot of air sure but you're never going to get that blur your eyeballs Hammer to the chest at a concert perfect drums feeling out of them.

Thats not on a Term Lab= new style pressure sensor type SPL meter. I had a walled 2-15" Power Hx2 Rockfords, with 2-Bd 1500s strapped, & I hit a 164Db on the old style SPL meter back then. When i ✔ it later on, with a New Term Lab meter, it only did a 149.9Db to my surprise= the new meter showed over 14 Db Less👀, everything was the same, metering positioning, subs, enclosure, amps, wiring, batteries(6 Qty.) & 1 alternator. Now to be fair, the old Audio Control meters could be manipulated by +, or - 10 Db with a knob. But even when calibrated properly, these old SPL meters lost there calibration very quickly, making them very inconsistent @ best. Not to mention that + or - 10 Db knob that i have seen used to cheat scores during a competition to make a fellow friend or competitor score "Louder", then turn the knob back down, to be able to win! These new Term Lab meters can NOT be manipulated/changed, to prevent cheating. Sorry if this hurts your feelings, but your 157.5 Db score would probably be about a 143Db to 145Db on the Term Lab SPL meter, which was not used in 2001 yet.

Thanks if you feel like answering! 👍🙏

    • @johnnycorn7225
      @johnnycorn7225 3 года назад +2

Since nobody answered I will I absolutely know that the flatter response and better transient response of sealed makes it far superior for me but then again I'm a 46 year old musician that's been a lot of time on a metronome.
Also the earthquake reproduction characteristic of sealed where it literally displaces a section of air in your vehicle that is heaven and a ported does not do this it just fans around a whole bunch of air from the port and sub. It never has that instant earthquake shock type impact to it and I like that.

You've probably gone on to a different setup by now, but I wonder what your air speed is in those ports. They might be compressing your output. Also, porting increases the volume at a specific frequency, so it's not necessarily 'supposed' to be +3dB everywhere in the range. Your port tuning and your listening area's tuning are two very different things.

I have had so many systems but easily my favorite was back when I had a pair of Fosgate DVC 12's in a sealed box running off a MTX Black Gold amp. I just haven't been able to find a sub with the same force factor. I went to 4 12" JL audio 12w3 running off twice the power. It was loud but nothing even close to the beating the 2 Fosgate DVC 12's would give you. I wish Rockford Fosgate would release a classic series of car audio where the legends that made the company would be available. I would buy multiple systems just to have backups of everything.

  • @Newschoolcovers

Are the 36hz the tuning frequency? Then it should be way more than like 1,5db. If so, your ports are too small and compress very hard what makes them behave like a closed box on high spl due to much port speed.

  • @allenkey1503

In my concern, i prefer a sealed box, large as you can. Because i'm a dj and club's conceptor, i'm also a music lover.
But a lot of peoples love the sound of ported enclosures. I don't discuss that, And build a lot of ported for them.
So, my point is about the phase of the port.. You could'nt make a real waves with a mécanical off-phase output in this configuration.. I prefer compansate the roll off by more power and good equalisation, who let clean lower band make me smiling.

Actually it's know that doubling power gains about 3 db on average. You can double the amount of speakers and get about the same 3db with that as well. Takes about 3 db for someone to notice a difference in "loudness"

@@E4EonEbay I absolutely do and have gone to comps since the early 90's and you know as well as I do that's not what I meant. Once you have achieved the max power your speakers can take this obviously isn't true. Also there is way more to car audio spl than in a building where this holds much more true because a car obviously deflects and panel flex affects max spl....I know what I am talking about and this video wasn't referring to anything like you are saying. Also I listen to real music not test tones and most of us like an even volume through all the bass frequencies not just a specific frequency for spl. I prefer quality over loud.

3 dB is the theoretical max at the tuning frequency of the port where the back and front waves are perfectly in phase. Obviously people expecting 3 dB across the spectrum will be disappointed! But ported is still a good bet when well tuned. Even for SQ, with a blindfold and optimal tuning, and especially in a car, almost no one could tell the difference (except the ported would be louder and therefore better).
