Zeus transformed her into a tree so that her soul wouldn't end up in th underworld to suffer th wrath of hades eternally. Th fact that of all types of trees he turned her into a pine is symbolic. In greek mythology th pine is a great symbol of royalty n also of fertility n protection; zeus is th god-king of th heavens n earth, n thalia's soul is what allows th pine to keep th magical barrier around th camp's borders perpetually active. Oddly hwvr, th pine is th sacred tree of poseidon in greek myth, not of zeus whose sacred tree is instead th oak

I love how they're treating Percy and Annabeth's relationship. It would be so easy for them to just "make" them like each other because the audience of readers knows and WANTS Percabeth. But no! They're mean to each other not because they "like" each other, but because their personalities genuinely butt heads! We don't get any stollen glances, they're just two kids barely tolerating each others' presence, and that's a great foundation for future developments

Is nobody gonna talk about annabeth in the convenience store?? The subtle nuance of one of her character flaws. Annabeth is a genius but she’s also indecisive in the books it’s one of her big things. In the store she can’t decide what candy she wants so she just gets all of them. It’s fucking perfect character development and I will not stand for it getting zero attention thank you gn

I agree it was good moment but do you know what is character development? Because that was not it.
They are just introducing us the character she possibly can't have any development yet it can be shown later in seasons based on what we learn now.
It just showed us she has dept to her character as she is not just strongest camper and "wise girl" but also still a child that was not in the world out there for so long... and if you are hinting flaws.. hers is not indecisiveness but pride.

that last scene with the trios was the moment it solidified to me they are perfect and their chemistry is chef's kiss. It was their strongest acting so far. You can tell all 3 of the kids are understandably nervous- but here they seemed so comfortable and confident in delivering. I am so impressed with them and I know they'll only get better. I completely understand the casting team. Walker IS Percy, he embodies all of his emotions so perfectly well, has that main character aura that pulls you in and makes you interested in his journey, and all of his deliveries are great. Plus, the impertinence - I could see the Percy I've always envisioned as a kid right there. And with such a solid kid chosen, I'm glad they chose Leah and Aryan based on their chemistry, bc it has seriously paid off.

  • @toriandtilly
    @toriandtilly 6 месяцев назад +23

Ok but as a kid that was victimized by someone else's victim I LOVE what they did with Medusa and what that teaches kids. Yes, Medusa is a victim so you can have empathy for her situation but she is still a monster and still needs to be held accountable for her actions. I feel like a lot of people overcorrect when it comes to her story and think that shes completely innocent but shes not. You can be wronged and do wrong at the same time. You can understand and feel sorry for the person that is doing harm to you but that doesn't mean you have to just let it happen. Its a powerful and complicated thing to teach and understand. I have been struggling to process and understand it myself for 20ish years and it would have meant a lot to see such a good example as a kid.

I really want a scene where he sees a newspaper or news about his mom's disappearance or the bus being evacuated with his face plastered everywhere. That's such a huge plot in the book about why they have to hide from mortals as well, it's weird that it hasn't come up yet.

But if would they drop that thing completely im personaly fine with that. What im looking for in the next episode more that newspapers is if we will finally get those iconic nicknames. I also really dig the changes they've been making. It highlights the book's philosophy in sort of leaning into the idea that the readers are typically pretty young, may not know much (if anything) about greek mythology, and sometimes the characters and plotlines reflect that. They bounce from one event to the next, most characters are either oblivious or a bit exposition-heavy (not dumping it on us but it's a pattern for sure) and leans into the cyclical nature of old greek myths and makes it snappy for young readers.

Everything else about the show is goddamn perfect. I love how all the changes are improving the story and making characters deeper. And idk the budget for this show but it is impressive how many characters require cgi just to stand there and look good. Like I’m surprised how often Mrs. Dodds and Chiron are in their true forms. So when it will get action packed in the end of the season we will exactly know what and why is everything happening and they will not have to slow thing for nonreaders to understand.. because i really believe we will get that action! Rick said that walker was so proficient in swordplay that the start of the season was hard to play cuz he had to act inexperienced. I love Medusa's theme in the show. It's both melancholy and sad, as well as unsettling and ominous, just like Medusa herself. *Brilliant* score work from Bear McCreary

also, Percy didn't blindly slash towards Medusa's invisible neck, Annabeth pointed where her neck was as soon as she threw the hat on her, guiding Percy
    edit #2
I highly doubt Hermes is involved with the Lotus casino, since the lotus eaters founded it. I see it more of like what the gods do with Calypso. They pay her visits and talk to her about the outside world. In this case, I think Hermes is at the casino just to spend some time, just paying it a visit.

I loved how with Medusas conflict, they already introduced that Poseidon and Athena don't like each other, which is a huge plot thing even in the next seasons...
And i loved all scenes of the trio after cutting off the head of medusa (even before but), it was amazing. And they already started that iconic matipulative conversations that are happening almost before every fight in PJO books if you know what i mean 😂. Cant wait till Percy himself starts to manipulate the monsters with talking i love those parts of the books!!!
If it wasn't evident that those actors are manifestation of PJO characters alive: Grover proved me that in the bus and Percy proved me that while sending the box to the Olympus! Cuz HE IS IMPERTINENT!!! Thats why i love Percy so much!!! His sassy and angry personality!!

I really liked this episode the best. I loved how they talked about monsters as they slowly showed the furies. The whole transition from that to Medusa was beautiful, and that portrayal of Medusa is honestly better than the book. The best part, however, is LIN MANUEL MIRANDA HUMMING ARTHUR’S THEME BY CHRISTOPHER CROSS AND THEN THE OUTRO PLAYING IT IN FULL!!!!
I am literally almost in tears over this as it is one of my most favorite songs from when I was little and it has been especially interesting with me being a gen z teen growing up with and listening to that era of music way more than anything else my generation listens too. In fact, one of the only songs from this past decade I actually listen to is Riptide🤣. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that Christopher cross music would be in Percy Jackson! It makes perfect sense with the elevator playing that style of music both in the books and the show but I am just overjoyed! Now my generation will actually be aware of that song, as I have yet to meet a single person my age that knows who Christopher cross is. But now they will

I believe the reason why Riordans' choice of extending some characters' sequences and changing some of the facts is the other way of his 'what if'. It has been years and years since those books were published and as an author, I believe there were some parts where he wanted to extend more or tell the story differently. He is using that chance and I'm all here for it. I'm so curious about the episode 'A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers'. I believe they made additions between Grover and Ares. The one who is portraying Ares also makes me feel excited even more. The show is getting better and better in each episode. Walker just owing those lines in such a Percy way, I love it!

One interesting thing that Rick mentioned about the changes is that, even though there are many versions of Medusa's story, and ofc you can reflect on the 3 parties involved and question yourself about who is the monster, who is good, who is a villain etc, but at the end of the day it's still a story of abuse - abuse of power. Actual gods and humans... it's just never on the same level, ever. And both abuse of their positions to force their own wishes and emotions on Medusa. I never thought about it like that, so it was nice reading what he had to say (plus Becky and Jon's inputs about how and why it was different in the books and how it was changed on the show)

Medusa IS a monster, she and her sisters all are. She's presented as a monster but I love how they play with the perception of characters in myth. How she thinks of herself and how she is able to seduce and almost enchant with her voice is very telling of her true nature. One thing that the books, and really the myths leave very clear is that the gods aren't inherently good or inherently evil since those are human perceptions. Demigods must choose to follow the gods and what they stand for or not(western civilization for the greek gods), as in they're not all pure sunshine and roses but have their moments or go against them with something even worse(The Titans)....

  • @lydia437

I Love Ur discussion over should we blindly trust the gods or question them because it speaks to a much larger discussion in the study of classics as a whole. The gods are never portrayed as fully good in Latin and Greek literature, but the general gist is that it’s their immortality and powers that make them gods, not any sort of moral high ground. Literature questioned the gods in the way that it exposed their many many flaws but never questions their authority or right to be gods. It’s one thing I love about studying classics is how the gods are almost human in their wrongdoing, but the human wrongs are extrapolated by their massive power.

the assault + stone eyes as gifts is a mostly modern, feminist take on the tale. All old telligs include seduction and punisment to Medusa bc she was a priestess and even if assaulted they were provided with a knife to take their own lives since Athena is one of the virginal goddesses. Either way, Medusa's punishment was bc she betrayed her vows. Also, both Poseidon and Zeus were known to seduce and deceve to get sex from mortals but not to straight up assault them only to later ignore them and their offspring...

I’m think the reason Percy chose Grover for the quest is also because Sally made Grover swear he would protect Percy so he knows Grover won’t betray him

Happy birthday kid first of all. My favorite episode so far the Medusa scene was amazing. Finally the characters begin to bond and act like themselves. Now in the Medusa story, it's only Rick Riordan who wrote them as lovers while in the myth Poseidon didn't do anything in Medusa's consent if I say it in gentle words. To me Athena cursed Medusa I take it as a curse. Because seriously- How did Athena expected Medusa to resist a freaking God who is so much more powerful.
He was even way more powerful than his niece which is why she decided on Medusa as a victim. When I first read about their arrival to Aunt M, once she said "Two sisters who shared the same fate" I realized who she was. And I remember screaming into the page "MEDUSA! OH NO! Guys get out of there now!" Hermes delivering the head is an interesting change but I prefer the book version of the delivery in which Percy shows how cheeky he is. Also- Would it have been so difficult to give Annabeth a blond wig? Because in acting the kid nails it.
Also let's be honest- The best scene from the 1st movie is the casino one and from the 2nd movie it's the taxi of Demnation. Only in the book they use the taxi to arrive into camp not the opposite.

I didn’t see Percy’s pinecone comment as a joke. She didn’t die as a hero, she died as a pine tree. It’s sad.

I really enjoyed pursuing this episode. It really kind of remind you. Yes, Percy is a good guy and a hero, but he also has kind of a jaded perspective, growing up without a father, and then his father turning out to be a God and all the gods do is just make his life, harder than it already is

I was kinda harsh on this episode, specially the bus scene. It felt unnecessary tension built up. We kinda lost the chiron on the hill scene (Which I was kinda attached to) the bus didn't blow up but then they addressed the prophecy and It all fell into place. I kinda like this better for the show I just wished they gave medusa a proper flashback but I get why they didn't.

(1/2) It's Disney+ they won't show a decapitation. It was clever and somehow made it better and more impactful; just like the backstory of Medusa; being a victim that identifies with Percy's mom. Seduced by a god who are supposed to be irresistible only to be discarded afterwards. Athena being a jealous b-word who slut-shamed Medusa and punished HER even though HE WAS A GOD.

(2/2).. I read that these changes came from Riordan himself. They're changes he thought would make the story more relevant and impactful today. Portraying the Gods as "assholes", cause they truly are in modern standards, from the POV of their children is such a fresh and novel take, I AM IN.
This beautifully plays to the bigger arc; Gods turned on their parents "Titans" cause they thought they knew better, and now these demi-gods believe THEY know better and admonish those Gods.... cycle continues.

I've seen characters deal with "the medusa problem" in hundreds of ways across a bunch of media, but I've never even tought of turning her invisible!! The idea is amazing! The execution not so much... we needed to cover her with sand or ink afterwards to justify how Percy was able to get such a clean hit. But the idea's still genius.

But then, despite all of that, he still does everything he can for the people he cares about I just like the fact that it’s a kids book, but he’s not like the stereotypical j go go lucky kid. Who’s like I’m gonna try to get along with everybody because that’s what heroes do know it’s more realistic. He knows some people are just horrible and he’s willing to treat that like real life.

This episode is warming me up to the show. I was quite hesitant towards it with all the changes it was making that I just didn’t jell with. Episode 3 is making it clear to me that the show isn’t trying to be a straight adaptation but more of a reimagining, So I’m looking forward to see where it goes.
I’m still not happy with the changes to Chiron’s character, they neutered his personality!

    • @alyaperez1440

It would be fine if they'd advertised it as a reimagining, but they haven't, saying its a faithful adaption. Compared to the movies yes, but there are things missing or being added in that just don't gel well imo 🤷‍♀

happy Birthday Cam!!! You think every change is beneficial?? Because i think the claiming of Percy and the satrt of quest was really rushed. Show doesn't make us feel the threat of war, nor Percy's feelings/reactions of realizing he's "Forbidden."
