Pat you are like the older brother...some of us didn't have! You are awesome!
My older brother helped teach me to fight. Not by formal lessons but because I had to fight with him. LOL.
Bro watch out, Becker might enjoy this too much….pay back for all the Dad Jokes….😂💥✌️. Seriously though these “teachable moments “ short clips a spot on! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I used to box a lot and then taught boxing for a few years... I have thought a lot about how this information is conveyed. Pat is a PHENOMENAL TEACHER. I like how he told the guy " I'm not going to hit you. I'm just using you as a reference point" because that situation, even a demonstration, is very unnerving for someone who's not used to it. He explained things well and also asked for questions at the end.
I love it … “…am I smokin’ crack on anything?” Good shit, Pat.
Dude, I am loving these videos.

The one thing I like about your coaching style is that you understand that it’s not something most people are comfortable with. I can appreciate what you’re doing with your students. I look forward to training with you someday.
That lady had very good punching form
Great stuff Pat! I go to the gym and hit the bag as a regular part of my workout. I am 62 and stay prepared just in case. I practice a lot of 1-2 with a follow up front kick. Glad you are sharing this knowledge, its become a crazy world out there.
Clean and efficient. Awesome info for worst case scenarios. Thank you Pat for your service and training.
Showing us the basics of CQC.
Excellent, Snake.
One of the best explanations I have ever seen sir OUTSTANDING!!!
Funny the timing this shows up on my feed, just started teaching this shit and bit more to my 6 year old daughter over the weekend -been having some boy bully trouble on the recess field.
Biggest part for those who are innocent among us is being able to break that seal to actually commit violence, gotta be able to flip that switch and do work without hesitation.
Daddy ain't raising no victim, she'll be OK.
Good man. I raised 4 girls now 23-30 yrs old. They all needed this stuff a time or 2. Glad I did what u r doing cuz once a bad guy figures out she's not just a pretty little victim (and their Dad will F them up) attitudes change. She will be more than OK
Women get technique pretty fast most of the time. The hard part is getting them to give themselves
permission to use violence against another person.
@@mbagwell2607 Good on ye. My kids got to know that, too- but they never told me the names of their opponents- cuz, well…. Daddy
Finish with the good ole double leg if need be! I know Pat knows all about that! Thank you for the great content!
Well said. Simple 1, 2 is very effective. Especially if you know your effective range. Appreciate these videos!
That's stuff we were taught in basic combative. Love it. Keep it coming
Hey Pat, I love these short vids you have been making lately and have been learning a lot. Thanks so much for sharing this stuff with us!
again. perfect bullseye. gold. the articulation is next level here. perfect economy in words.
I also like the jab to control the distance. A post style jab is great to not wreck your hand but still be able to knock someone on there but. Basically, keeping your jab arm stiff and using your body to move forward and back... not intended to be a knockout punch but very powerful. Thank you Pat for taking the time to share your knowledge. We have plenty of sheep and not enough Shepards.
This is a perfect OODA loop, the one gets you the .5 second of distraction you need for that two to land where it needs and end the confrontation.
It’s not so easy to just “knock someone out”. Everything has to be perfect. Watch a boxing match or an mma fight. Or a street fight. It’s not the movies.
@@JK-vc7ie having been in my fair share of fights your absolutely right. It's the distraction, element of surprise and the opponents inexperience that you're looking to take advantage of.
@@JK-vc7ie unless there is some really bad blood between you two, most confrontations like this will end once you land a solid face wallop on the other guy, even if he doesn't go down and out.
Look up Geoff Thomson "the fence" he developed the entire open hand distance situation control position to a very high level
I got attacked in my home by a crackhead once. He had wondered around the block and tried to get doors open, and I had forgot to lock it after taking the dog out. If I had lived in Texas or something I would have shot him dead, but in Sweden you can’t really do that.
It ended with me stabbing the guy two times, but before that I remember punching his head anywhere between 5-10 times. He had hunkered down, after my father had tackled him into a wall, and I threw punches from above.
At the time I didn’t know much about martial arts or boxing, and in hindsight I think that punching him like that did more damage to my hands than it did to his thick skull. After that incident I have spend a lot of hours boxing, and I think that everyone should do the same. No matter who you are there will always be people out there who will try to hurt you, and you need to be prepared for that. Choose to not be a victim.
because fingers are much smaller and weak than the skull. you're lucky you didn't smash your hands to bits. against skull: knees, kicks, elbows and palm strikes. punches ONLY to the stomach.
It's incredible how people who are high don't react. Doors get in the way of right hooks.
@@decespugliatorenucleare3780 So why is this one-two even being taught? Shouldn’t *first be palm and *second be forearm/elbow?
Fight is *over if my hands are broken!
Because it aims for the jaw/nose not the skull itself aka top of the head so you need less power to do more damage
@@cluek9780 Because you're going for soft tissue and more fragile bones, not the skull.
Hi Pat. Just wanted to thank you. I have a 14-year-old nephew I’m extremely close with. He’s at that age When things can just happen. I was a competitive martial artist as a younger man, and started training him up a bit when he was 10 or 11, but then my health went down the toilet, I’m too unhealthy to get out of bed, I’m no longer able to mentor my nephew With direct training. So I’ve been sending him your videos. This is the second one I’ve sent him. The first one what is the video where are you set to circle the aggressor instead of backing away from the aggressor. I couldn’t have agreed more, I sent it straight to my nephew, and he immediately engaged with it. He understood immediately why you council people to do this and he found it fascinating. So thank you for helping me prepare my nephew.
How cool is it that he’s got his lady out there demoing shit. Great stuff!
If someone messed with her, I don't think she would need Mr Mac to kick your a$$.
Man I just found you. Good shit sir. Doing stuff like this, similar to the way you do is my goal. You have expensive knowledge that will help someone at just the right time. Rock on sir
Beckah got some POP! Great form. Chin tucked and everything
this dude is funny as hell- super helpful too! Much appreciated sir
These are awesome, vital pieces of knowledge spread among all these ~5 min vids. 🤘
Another fantastic video 👍😄 yes I use the one as a range finder. Keep up the good work. Have a great day
I'd like to adjust an expression: "Power comes from the hips" in "Power comes from the heels (through knees, hips, shoulder, elbow, punch)"...
Love.. love.. love this type of quick, down and dirty training vids 💪🏼subscribed
Much love Pat!!! Rock and RoLL brother!
Love that he's putting out more content.
Outstanding content !
One two is excellent. Be ready with 3,4,5 if the one two, only rocks them .
Pat McNamara and Ernest Langdon are putting out the best content on RUclips, period.
100% a range finder. Awesome 😎
As a boxer I was surprised that you didn't make any mistakes.. good job man! Though omitting some important aspects like the rear foot pivot during the straight, and what your stance should be etc. The power comes from the legs and hips after all
Trebuchet is good analogy, I make my hand, forearm and shoulder like a piece of wood, as solid as possible for that #2. Makes for a quick finish most times. If it goes on from there you have to take it as it comes. I have liked a lot of your videos, especially the common sense ones, like what are you carrying in your truck. That was a good one. Fighting is better avoided in every situation you can manage it for damn sure. No future in it.
Always enjoyable to watch and learn from a pro. Thanks for continued content.
Good lesson, one point to add. Once most get done with their 1 & 2 strikes, they don’t move off line. They stand right in front of their opponent. You need to learn how to properly step off angle and load up your next combo. In reality, before showing 1 & 2 combo, they should learn footwork via box drill
Your point is added into the mini-block later on when the participants are paired off. Good point, though.
@@chuckclark6162 thank you
Tyson was a expert at that if u watch his tapes
@@Rudy28330 100%, he would close the distance with his peeek a boo head movement (hands never leaving chin). Once he was sharing a phone booth with you, savage
For years I primarily focused on the ground. It was not until studying boxing did my understanding of distance, levels, and angles improve
I love these kind of videos!! Keep ‘em coming!
i was first brought here by his 'street fight philosophy' video, and man: this guy is a warrior...
Did my dude just say turn your body to a meat trebuchet? Awesome! Awesome to the max!
“It’s the one that you don’t see that’ll knock you out.”
Love the info. Not sure why you showed in my recommended but you got a sub
Very good advice
Love your stuff, Bro!!! Good stuff - no bully bullshit or tough guy routine...just down to earth how to...!!!! Keep it up - God Loves ya and so do I!!!!
Thanks Pat! Love your stuff Dudeman. Seriously, THANKS! When you coming to Livingston Montana!?
I am by no means a street fighter. I am a avoid a fight kinda guy. I did learn as a LE officer that hands break. The more knowledgeable guys that did fight and teach a lot said if you must, use stick or taser. If you can not one up the threat with a weapon, use elbows, knees, head strikes. Practice elbow, knee, head strikes 10 k times. Actually hit sparring partner wearing motorcycle helmet for real time training. There is a lot to it. If a fight should happen to go to the ground, as many do, and the fella is a ground fighter, could be a big problem. Like Tyson says, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth. Hopefully, training takes over if that happens. Great video. It really gets me thinking. Glad to be retired and not having to do this all the time. Thankful for our frontline skilled warriors and teachers like Pat, that are training the younger generation.
You, sir, are a Shepard. Great stuff. Thank you
I was taught to step through the person as the punch/punches are thrown. It adds that much more mass to contact. (watch Bruce Lee's one-inch punch) Most people can't handle you being inside their space, so this psychologically freaks them out while they are jarred with punches. Your spot on with the center-mass strikes. A solar plex shot can end a battle in one punch. Most don't defend that area.
No crack smoke on this end! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! I have followed Pat since Joe Rogans and Jocko WIllink podcast and he looks legit! Thank you for your instructions, sir. I hope that I can use them when it comes to it. One question that I have is that: Is closed fist punch better or safer to execute or open palm strikes? Because I was told to strike open palm as closed fist strikes may break my phalanges.
The only thing I can think to add is make sure to squeeze your fist as tightly as possible, and firmly lock your wrist. I've seen a number of people hit a heavy bag for the first time and hurt themselves. Hell I did it when I was a kid and just learning. You gotta really take all the space out of the inside of your fist, and remove all the wiggle frim your forearm if you want to throw your best punch. Oh... and it's gonna hurt like hell no matter how well you throw the #2. Punching face bones is painful.
Getting hit or hitting someone is a lose, lose situation. Make sure your life is really being threatened on the spot before thinking about hitting someone with this deadly force. The state prisons and hospitals are filled with both.
Beware the guy who calmly kicks your butt or smiles while fighting.
Good info. Should also cover one of the most important topics - making a proper fist (or just use palmstrike if untrained)?
If you aim for his upper chest, many times you will hit him in the face or throat because most fighters duck down when they are attacking. So, if you are having trouble landing shots on a fighter with quick reflexes,.....go for the spot right beneath his throat. Also, throw a few fakes. And if that fails, go for the groin punch. Throw two or three punches to the chest area, and follow it up with a couple of groin shots. And remember that your punching power comes from the rotation from your feet, through your legs, through the rotation of your hips, through your stomach, and through the rest of your body through your fist.
keep these coming , really good advice
A heavenly match: Pat & Rebecca. And they can fight! 😉
💪🏼😎🇺🇲
I'm sure that I couldn't knock that man down with a hammer. Love that dude.
When I teach muay thai and explain the concept of the striking zone, I like to call it the "AT&T" range. Like their old slogan said, "reach out and touch someone." To reach out and touch someone, you need Accuracy, Timing, and Technique(AT&T).
*Throwing a Jab, even a light one is like putting a bug on a windshield.*
1, 2 & out! lol Love it, great advice and demonstration. I learned something, thanks. 👍 It kind reminds me on an old school 80s flick, Breakfast Club. Imma give you two hits. Me hitting you and you hitting the floor 😂
I too am very protective of my personal space, especially and most notably in the presence of an agitated individual. One warning , maybe two and then it's self defense time.
✌️
On point brother!
Pat's one = hospital bed
Pat's two = cemetery
Those of us who have been hit in the ‘beak’ before, can relate perfectly.
Shadow box this combo for 30 seconds or a minute and unless you are in shape you'll be gassed. People punch themselves out. If the other person can withstand a short burst of punches or refuse to concede the tables can get turned.
I hope you led that class on a 20 mile run after this.

Who would look at Pat and say to themselves " I want to scrap with him". Pat looks tough as a $2 steak. Goes to show how stupid some people are.
Guys that dont know what the 1000 yard stare is.
That’s what he was saying at the beginning. Stay out of the other guys punching zone because you don’t know who that dude is. He might not look like Pat but we all know most bad ass boxers don’t look like much in street clothes at first glance.
How do you feel about how Bruce Lee described how he uses his hands when punching; clenching at the last second and trying to make contact with with your middle, ring and pinky knuckles mostly? Does this apply here?
Who in their right mind would pick a fight with Pat!
Sooner or l8r he s gonna hit by accident the dude test "dummy" 🤣🤣🤣
Good stuff.
Awesome to teach others how to defend themselves and sharing your knowledge.
I do wonder though, how do you get into so many street fights? I mean, you must be looking for it or something.
Go to a boxing gym, before service I used to throw jabs with my dominate hand believing it was the power "one punch knock out" but with very little training and a stance switch like Mac is talking about it was a game changer, forget your programming and do what your body is set up to to do, humans are apex for a reason our brains.
Hips, shoulders and boom, even against a bag lefties take note :)
My wife told me I needed to be in touch with my feminine side, so I crashed the car. Then I ignored her for an entire day for no reason.
😂😂😂😂
I liked agreed with everything you had to say. I was a fair to midlin boxer back in the day and had been the state champ. But wondering if you cover the added the legal aspect of street fighting in your course? Now 66. Merchant Marine Captain. Oh So handy.
My dyslexia ass thought this said Throwing a one inch punch😂
Brokeass hand relegates me to elbows and palm strikes...
Relic of a misspent youth.
Question. So you won’t strike preemptively? 🙏🏻
Regarding the one-two with left-right. I'm thinking the average person's right arm is much stronger than the left. So people will need to train the left arm first. I have zero boxing experience but I can throw a baseball 80 mph with my right arm. I think that translates to decent right arm punches with training. But I can't punch at all with my left arm. Left arm feels like it has 30% punching power of the right arm.
We all need the fuck you up light switch
Closed fists? I assume that leads to broken fingers/wrist before one even thinks about throwing the 2
Great tip's " Must subscribe.
Rebecca reminds me Megan Anderson, the ufc fighter. Seriously bad ass.
Also, I've been watching mma and boxing for decades and sad to admit, I do NOT know the fundamentals of a simple 1,2. Thank you for sharing !!
Stay safe, stay blessed.
From Texas 👍🙏🇺🇲
You should step forward with your jab, throw right cross and either follow up with more or move off center/back.
@@VictoryOrValhalla14 elaborate please....I get going for more, but when my adrenaline kicks in, having no experience, I'm concerned anything goes out the window since it's not a habit as in trained. So .... best option is separate and move back ??
@@Six2226 I would throw the one, two and move back to draw my weapon, It’s something I practice quite often. When you throw a jab(one) you step(half or 1/4 step)with your lead foot(that step gives you momentum and weight as power)snap the jab and pull it straight back to your guard and then let the right cross(two) Turing your knuckles over and rotation of the hip and foot(where all power is generated) Moving back is a lot easier for people that don’t train boxing and if your drawing a gun it gives you the separation you need. Also you want to hit with your first two knuckles(pointing finger and middle finger knuckles). The other two are a good way to break your hand. So aim pointing finger knuckle right into the chin or base of nose.
@@VictoryOrValhalla14 picking up what you are putting down to my best ability. Seriously appreciate the advice and the time you took to share sir. 👍
@@Six2226 check out a boxing channel called Tony Jeffries, he does a lot of basics and fundamentals. Try precision shrinking as well.
Grappling is good for the Arsenal as well. 🤙
Great content as always. Thoughts on closed fist striking and the chance of injuring yourself? I was told once, soft hand on hard target (palm) and hard hand (closed fist) on soft target. Just thinking things escalate, if you had to go for your weapon and now you got a broken hand.
What is the target for the the 2, temple, jaw, orbital?
that's what I'm wondering. Camera just goes to the worng place and you can't see. Chin, throat, eye, beak?
Great video, I love the philosophy here. Defense first, awareness, and efficiency. Real quick, I wanna add something.
Pat, don't you think classic boxing is too watered down street fighting? Good luck landing a 1-2 on initial engagement if someone decides to attack you.
I show defensive position and attack posture as my fundamentals. Absorbing contact, gaining control, utilizing resources (hand2hand combat, etc). I feel like it contributes more to the mindset than fighting alone does.
That 1-2 off top is great for a bar fight though. Mutual combat, or semi-mutual combat. But in a real survival situation it can be false sense of confidence.
Great stuff here, man. Thanks for the show. Keep em coming
The point is that the approach to general-self-defense martial arts starts with awareness & vision, space management, and striking. This is all taught in boxing, in its purest form. Once those fundamentals are grooved in, expand and add to it.
It is similar to the pistol handling approach, where trigger control & sight alignment are critical, everything else (such as stance and breathing) are building out the skill and improving it.
Are you saying if some one attacks first? If that’s the case you should divert to defense so you don’t get jacked up. But the 1 2 is still useful in that once you create distance.
@@silvermediastudio 100%. Totally agree
@@jpc3984 sort of. I'm saying to know the difference in mutual or semi-mutual combat vs being attacked and survival.
The same rules of engagement do not apply.
There's still honor in mutual combat, what Pat is showing here is semi-mutual combat tactics. He's accepting a call out.
Pat's first move in survival defense is run. It only escalates to lethal force from there. The combo here is not going to be your first move in survival defense.
@@DAAllen-xi3vd Agreed. That makes sense, but honestly in a street fight after the 1-2 it’s find anyway to win including kick to the balls, choke out, poke eyes, use a tool…
Really wish we had some sort of this training in Ireland, we have no firearms here accept the criminals. Maybe a trip out to ya someday for a lesson. Cheers from Ireland
Get to a boxing or Muay Thai gym.
Rebeccar got hands!!!
Great skills
But beware of broken hands
I know many a boxer who have broken hands in street fights
In my humble opion open hand technique
Is very good
I practiced this on my mother in law.
It worked.
Hell yeah Pat!
I want to train with the Mac.
0:55 "tReHBoOjHeY" is the word of the day 📖💪🧠
Mac what’s the best way to finish the 1 2 if the guy doesn’t go down, should you just go to a double leg and ground and pound, or should you maintain your distance and incorporate a kick or get ready to punch again?
Kick to balls or eye jab are banned from combat sports because they are fight ending
Assuming they are left leg forward I look for my L snap kick to their nuts or my l finger jab to the eyes
Might not be easy to find but Bruce Lee covered this in his early Jun fan gung fu books
